The Kapoor family is a prominent Indian family, with a long history in Hindi cinema. Many members of the family have been successful actors, film directors, and producers.

Background

The Kapoor family is of Pathan Hindu origin.[3][5][6] Prithviraj Kapoor was the first from the family to pursue acting. He was born in the town of Peshewar in British India in 1906, they Kapoor family lived over hundrerds of years in Peshewar and duting the film are moved to Punjab.[7][8] His father, Basheshwarnath Kapoor, served as a police officer of the Indian Imperial Police, in the city of Peshawar, British India.[9] while his grandfather, Keshavmal Kapoor described them as ethnic Hindu Pathans of the first generation.[10] Prithviraj's first lead role was in Cinema Girl in 1929.

All three of Prithviraj Kapoor's sons, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Shashi Kapoor, became actors. Raj Kapoor's sons, Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor, went on to become well-known actors; his youngest son, Rajiv Kapoor, was not as successful as his brothers.
