Medininagar (Daltonganj) is a city in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is the headquarters of Palamu division and Palamu district, as well as the subdivision and block of the same name. The city is situated on the banks of the North Koel River.[1]

Origin of name

Medininagar (Daltonganj) city is named after Colonel Edward Tuite Dalton (1815–1880), an anthropologist and the District commissioner of Chota Nagpur in 1861, during the British Raj who established this city after clearing Bijra Bagan.[2][clarification needed] The name of the city was changed to Medininagar, after the king Medini Rai. Some noted places in Daltonganj are the Redma Bridge, the Chhahmuhan chowk Ranka Raj complex, Panchmuhan chowk, Bichhawan furnishing dharamsala road, Mahavir Bastralaya, LX INN Hotel & Restaurant, Mahendra arcade (shopping mall), The Raymond Shop, chandra residency, Mohan picture palace and Kanni Ram chowk, Gayatri mandir Sudna,sadar hospital,sewa sadan,pink palace etc.[citation needed]

History

The Chero dynasty ruled this region for a long period [when?]. The most famous among Chero rulers was Medani Rai.

Palamau Fort and Shahpur Fort are major historical landmarks in this area.

Geography

Medininagar (Daltonganj) is located at 24°02′N 84°04′E / 24.03°N 84.07°E / 24.03; 84.07.[3] It has an average elevation of 215 m (705 ft).

The famous Betla National Park is located about 26 km from the city. This park is well known for tigers, and comes under the Palamau Tiger Project. Another scenic picnic spot nearby is Kechki, located about 18 km from Daltonganj, at the cofluence of the Koel River and the Auranga River. Netarhat, a scenic plateau covered with thick forests, is also situated near Daltonganj. It is a popular summer resort known for its picturesque sunrise and sunset.

Transport

The major transport of Daltonganj is Autorickshaw, Train, Three wheel Rickshaw and Buses etc.

Daltonganj is located 1,036 kilometres (644 mi) south east of New Delhi and is accessible by train from Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi, Kota, Bhopal Junction, Delhi, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Varanasi and Gaya. The nearest airport is 165 kilometres (103 mi) away in Ranchi. It also has an airport in Chianki, which is only used occasionally by visiting dignitaries. In the case of VIP movement (which occurs roughly once a year) a portable transmitter is installed here.

Medininagar (Daltonganj) is well connected with Patna, Ranchi, Kolkata, Durgapur, Varanasi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Delhi, Lucknow, Allahabad, Kota, Kanpur and Gaya Etc by road.

Railways

Daltonganj Railway station(DTO) is a major station on the CIC[expand acronym] line. All major trains always halt there.

The city is connected to Delhi with four trains: Jharkhand Swarnajayanti express, Raurkela Hatiya JammuTavi express,Rajdhani express and more.

It is also connected to Kolkata with five trains: Shaktipunj express Howrah Jabalpur, Howrah bhopal express, Kolkata Ajmer and much more.

This city is connected to Patna with only one Train:Palamau Express from (Barkakana) to (Patna Junction)

Demographics

As of 2014 India census,[4] Medininagar (Daltonganj) had a population of 619,972. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Medininagar (Daltonganj) has an average literacy rate of 90%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81% and, female literacy is 80%. In Medininagar (Daltonganj), 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.[citation needed]

Health

The government run hospital in the area is the Sadar hospital.Sadar hospital has now become a better and modern hospital with best facilities. People are usually very less referred to nearby cities like Ranchi or Patna for better care but Daltonganj Sadar hospital now takes better care of patients. There are a few private hospitals in the area for primary health care. Like PRAKASH CHANDRA JAIN SEVA SADAN (NEAR MAHENDRA ARCADE), ASHI LIFE CARE HOSPITAL(RANCHI ROAD,REDMA),LONG LIFE CARE HOSPITAL (SADIQUE CHOWK) ETC. Some famous doctors live in Daltonganj and have their clinics. Vishwanath Ojha's clinic for General surgeon specialist (SATTAR SETH CHOWK). This doctor is a very famous doctor, ARUN SHUKLA for bone and Nerve(JAIL HATA ROAD), Dr ANAND KUMAR for chest specialist and civil surgeon(KANNI RAM CHOWK), DR. A. ANSARI ( SADIQUE CHOWK ) general physician and surgeon, Miss RAHAT NEZAM (RIVER SIDE) ,RAHUL AGRAWAL for bone and nerve specialist(KANNI RAM CHOWK) and more doctors are available in the city too.

Culture

Major Hindu and Muslim festivals are celebrated in Daltonganj. Hindus and Muslims celebrate muharram and chhath together. The town is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Daltonganj. The town has several societies, clubs, and NGOs including Palamau Club, Rotary Club and Rida Foundation.[6]

Temples

Vishnu Mandir is a temple situated in the heart of Medininagar (Daltonganj). It was built by Vishnu Sahu in 1936.[citation needed]

Hanuman Mandir' is a temple situated in the center of Medininagar (Daltonganj) main market. Many people come here to worship Hanuman on Tuesday and Saturday. There is a sweet shop inside this temple where people can buy prasad. The whole street is called Mahabir Mandir Road.

Kali Mandir is a very oldest and famous temple situated in the center of Daltonganj Redma Chauk By pass road Beside RIIT Computer Centre ( Rastriya Institute of Information Technology ).Many people come here to Poojan specially on Tuesday and Saturday. There is a Prasad shop (Nariyal)of Balendu Shekhar inside this temple where people can buy prasad. The whole street is called Kali Mandir By pass Road Daltonganj.

Other temples include Bhikham Das Mandir, Hira Mandir, Devi Mandir, New Kali Mandir, Surya Mandir, Old Shiv Mandir, Shani Mandir, Shitla Mandir, Gayatri Mandir-Sudna, Hanuman Mandir-Sudna, Sriramjanki Mandir-Janakpuri, Chitragupta Mandir-Navatoli.

Education

The only university in Medininagar (Daltonganj) is Nilamber-Pitamber University, created on the 17th of January, 2009.[7][8] The Chief Minister of Jharkhand declared that the Nilamber-Pitamber University would be set up in Medininagar (Daltonganj) in 2001.[9] There are 66 primary schools, 30 middle schools, 17 Navsirijit schools, 10 high schools and 1 Engineering College in the Daltonganj block.[10] The main colleges in Daltonganj include:
