The 2018 William Hill World Darts Championship is an upcoming darts event. It will be held between 14 December 2017 and 1 January 2018 at the Alexandra Palace in London.[1] It will be the 25th World Championship organised by the Professional Darts Corporation since it separated from the British Darts Organisation.
Michael van Gerwen is the defending champion.
Phil Taylor will be playing in his final World Championship. His 29th successive appearance (including the BDO version) will surpass the record of 28 he jointly holds with John Lowe.[2]
Format
The field will consist of 72 players — 16 players compete in the preliminary round with the winning 8 joining the remainng 56 players in the first round of 64. There has been a change to the qualifying criteria from recent editions of the tournament. Previously, the top four non-qualified European players from the Pro Tour Order of Merit would gain places at the championships; now the four places are decided by invitation at the PDC's discretion.
The 72 players consist of:
- Top 32 players in the PDC Main Order of Merit
- Top 16 Pro Tour Order of Merit players
- 24 Invites from International qualifiers and a PDPA qualifier
