Based on the 1990–95 British live-action television sitcom of the same name created by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson, the series centers on Mr. Bean (voiced by the latter), Teddy, Irma Gobb and the Reliant Regal's mysterious driver, with the addition of new characters such as Bean's landlady Mrs. Wicket and her evil cat Scrapper. In February 2001, the series was officially announced, with it premiering shortly afterwards.

Debuting on 5 January 2002 and originally ending on 2 June 2004, three series and 52 episodes were broadcast, each consisting of two 11-minute segments. The first two series were originally broadcast on ITV1 at a prime time Saturday night slot. In May 2004, the series left ITV1 and the third and final series was instead broadcast daily on CITV due to the series's popularity with younger audiences.

In January 2014, CITV announced a revival of the series with Rowan Atkinson returning as the voice of Mr. Bean, along with other cast members reprising their roles. The revival featured 78 new episodes; the new episodes began airing from 16 February 2015 to 8 October 2019. The revival contained more actual dialogue than in the original series, which mostly featured little sound effects and mumbling.

Characters

Main

• Mr. Bean (voiced by Rowan Atkinson) – The titular character and main protagonist of the series who wants every environment around him to be clean and out of trouble.
• Teddy – Mr. Bean's lifelong best friend. Despite being an inanimate object, Bean pretends that Teddy is alive, much like in the original live action series.
• Mrs. Wicket (voiced by Sally Grace) – Mr. Bean's mean-spirited and elderly landlady who often despises Bean, though she occasionally is friendly towards him. As a running gag, she screams out loud during bad situations, which often scares the birds outside the apartment.
• Scrapper – Mrs. Wicket's evil one-eyed pet cat who despises Mr. Bean, much like his owner.
• Irma Gobb (voiced by Matilda Ziegler) – Mr. Bean's long-suffering girlfriend, just like she is in the live action series.

Supporting

• The Burglars (voiced by Edgar Wright) – A duo of unnamed thieves (one stocky and the other small) who frequently commit crimes while in various disguises, but are nevertheless frequently defeated and arrested by the police, mainly when Mr. Bean is their victim or witness.
• The Bruisers – Mr. Bean and Mrs. Wicket's initially unnamed neighbours, a working class overweight family consisting of a father, mother, three spoiled children and a dog. While they do appear as a whole family in the episodes "Neighbourly Bean", "Scaredy Bean" and "Super Spy", the Bruisers appear as father and son in most episodes.
• Queen Elizabeth II – The queen regnant of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, of whom Mr. Bean is a fan.
• The Traffic Warden – An unnamed parking enforcement officer who appeared previously in the original live action series episode "The Trouble with Mr. Bean". True to her name, she does her job of locating and ticketing illegally-parked cars across London. Due to Mr. Bean habitually parking his Mini illegally, she promptly gets in his way, which puts Bean at odds with her. She is very committed at her duty, up to the point of even ticketing a police officer once.
• Reliant Regal – A blue three-wheeled car that falls victim to accidents whenever Mr. Bean bypasses it in his Mini, much like the running gag involving it in the original live action series.
• Lottie – Irma's teddy bear who looks identical to Teddy except she has eyelashes, a red bow and a skirt. She is portrayed as Teddy's girlfriend, but Mr. Bean disapproves of this relationship (with the exception of the episode "Double Trouble").
• Mr. Pod – A man who is identical to Mr. Bean. Instead of having a Teddy, he has a toy penguin called Pengy. He only appears in the episode "Double Trouble". Mr. Pod is not the only doppelgänger of Bean to appear in the episode; in it, Bean boards a spaceship and the inhabitants of the ship all look exactly like him.

This is a list of episodes of Mr. Bean: The Animated Series, a British animated comedy television series produced by Tiger Aspect Productions for ITV and CITV and based on the original live-action sitcom of the same name created by and starring Rowan Atkinson as the title character. It premiered on 5 January 2002 and originally ended on 2 June 2004.

On 22 January 2014, CITV announced a revival of the series with Atkinson and other cast members reprising their roles. 52 new episodes were broadcast from 16 February 2015 to 10 March 2016.

On 6 February 2018, CITV announced a fifth series of the show, which features a total of 26 episodes. Series 5 premiered on 9 April 2019 on CITV as well as on Turner channels worldwide.

In January 2024, another revival was announced, set to premiere on ITVX Kids in 2025.

Mr. Bean brings an injured magpie to his flat, then realises that it likes to collect shiny things from the neighbours' houses. When Mrs. Wicket and the policeman see this, Bean is wrongly arrested for grand thievery. When the policeman returns from his car after having a parking fine, he sees the magpie holding his keys, and finally realises that the magpie was responsible for theft. Bean is released from custody, but when he returns to his flat, he finds the Queen's crown stolen by the magpie, which shocks him.

Bean escapes, but is mistaken for the driver and ends up transporting three customers, making over £250 in fares, but manages to return the taxi to the petrol station without getting caught. When the taxi driver drops Bean off, the fare is a mere 85 pence. Bean finally goes to the toy shop and buys an elaborate racing track set that almost fills his room.

Unfortunately, because he just filled it up with helium he begins to fly and lands on the top of the tree. When the deliveryman fails to rescue Bean, Irma rescues Bean instead, losing her heart to the deliveryman while Bean apologizes to Irma for deceiving her. Later, Bean and Irma hang out again with Bean giving a muscle balloon to her.

He manages to drag Mrs. Wicket and her friend to the bomb, resulting in them quickly barricading themselves in the block of flats. When Bean notices Teddy near the bomb, he successfully retrieves him but is unable to get Scrapper in the apartment just as the bomb explodes, which sends Scrapper flying into the Bruisers' pool and mud raining down on the Bruisers. When a broken water pipe in the crater sprays water out, Bean turns the muddy crater into a homemade pool for him, Mrs. Wicket and her friend to relax while the Bruisers glare at them.

More passing motorists think Bean runs a car wash, and he washes their cars while Mrs. Wicket offers them tea and biscuits. Finally, Bean washes a royal blue car belonging to the Queen, but a passing flock of birds poo all over it. When the normal removal method of using a wire brush to scrape it off does not work, Bean uses an electric mixer to remove it, but accidentally scratches the paint off the car in the process. To compensate for this, Bean grinds the whole blue paint off the car, revealing the silver-coloured metal underneath, only to be annoyed by the officers. A moment later, the Queen emerges from the car, likes the new look, and thanks Bean for all his hard work. After Bean receives a substantial payment and the Queen departs, Mrs. Wicket steals all the money.

He rides a roller coaster at a fairground, but in the on-ride photo his face is partially obscured by his tie. At a final attempt, Bean proceeds to trigger a speed camera, but he is caught trying to dismantle the camera and arrested by two nearby police officers. After being released from the police station, Bean puts his mugshot in his passport and the airport check-in staff member finally accepts it; however, by this time his flight has already departed.

Reception

The show was met with mostly positive reviews from television critics and audiences much like the original live action series; it holds a 7.8/10 rating on TV.com, a 6.8/10 rating on IMDb and an 84% rating from Google users. Common Sense Media, an education and advocacy group that promotes safe technology and media for children, gave the show 3 stars and wrote "UK slapstick cartoon [is] geared toward older kids, adults."

Home media

Mr. Bean: The Animated Series has been released on DVD by A&E Home Video in Region 1 (actually are Region Free), and by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment in Regions 2 and 4. In the United States, the first three series of the series were released entirely on six volumes while in the United Kingdom and Australia, the six volumes only contained 47 of the 52 episodes, to which the last five episodes instead appeared each as extra features on DVDs of the original live action series.

The reason for this was that when the five episodes were classified by the British Board of Film Classification in the United Kingdom, they were each given a PG certificate instead of a U certificate, unlike the other episodes. It was decided that all the DVDs of the series should have a U certificate each, resulting in the five PG-rated episodes not being included.

In Region 4, the DVD Mr. Bean: The Animated Series: Season 2, Volume 3 – Racing Adventures was an exclusive product for Big W; nowadays, it is no longer available.

Video games

A third-person platform video game based on the series and titled Mr. Bean's Wacky World was released on 14 December 2009 on PAL for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii (retitled as Mr Bean's Wacky World of Wii).

Two apps also based on the series have been released such as Mr. Bean: Around the World and Mr. Bean: Flying Teddy, which are both available globally on iOS, Android and Amazon mobile devices.
