Use images of Studio Ghibli

Hello Nihonjoe, on 18 September 2020, Studio Ghibli released images of 8 anime movies on their website. It says "Feel free to use it within the bounds of common sense." Can it be used on Wikipedia? Also see this article on Soranews. - Artanisen (talk) 01:02, 14 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Revoking permission to move pages

Hello Nihonjoe, since you commented on WP:ANI#Concerns about AichiWikiFixer's competence and lack of communication, I'm hoping you can coach me a little, since I'm out of practice with most admin tools. SnowFire's suggestion to revoke permission to move pages sounded like a no-brainer, so I thought I'd just go ahead and do that. But then I realized two things: ① I don't know how to remove user rights, and I see no how-to instructions for admins on Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Granting and revoking user rights and Wikipedia:Page mover. ② The user doesn't have the page mover permission. If I understand it correctly, then, what they do doesn't require any permission. So the only thing we can do is ask them. Right?

On a related note; asking you since you have 日本 in your username: Do you think the lack of communication might be explained by a language barrier? ◅ Sebastian 14:00, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

TfD Closure

I am a little confused by your close of Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2020_November_17#Template:Dashboard.wikiedu.org_assignment. Mainly, I don't understand what PAG rationale makes the keep votes (which were roughly equal in number) "stronger" than delete votes. And I'm also not sure why it was closed very soon after the 7th day when discussion was still active - with 3 extra responses on the day of closure; why wasn't it relisted? I'm also a bit concerned by the principle that a third party software (to my understanding, anyway) can mass-put a template on various articles, not bother clean it up after it is no longer relevant, something even multiple keep voters expressed concerns with and supported the removal of. TfD is, and often does, have closes which deal with these problems, and I think your close, despite all the discussion and substantial support for talk message conversion / orphaning expired usages, puts us right back to before the TfD started with no progress made. Hope you can advise on these concerns. Thanks, ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 07:22, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ProcrastinatingReader: My rationale for the closure was very clear: those arguing for keeping the template had stronger arguments. And progress was made: deleting the template is (currently) not an option, so other remedies for fixing the issue need to be explored. If you are concerned about "third party software" doing things, that's not a discussion for TFD or my talk page. Bring it up at the appropriate venue and express your concerns so other editors can participate int he discussion and come to a consensus regarding that. Perhaps the Village pump or Wikipedia talk:Education program. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:26, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
that's not a discussion for [...] my talk page no, but this is the place to respectfully question the accuracy of your close, whose short statement and claim of stronger arguments is slightly dismissive to a torn TfD. I think it's fair to ask how you came to the conclusion of them being "stronger arguments"? For example, is there any PAG support or precedent for this kind of template? ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 16:46, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've modified my close. Hopefully, that addresses your concerns, even if you don't like the result. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:00, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's clearer and helpful. Thanks! ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 19:08, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nihonjoe, I'm glad to see that you at least expanded on your close rather than just being dismissive to ProcrastinatingReader, but to be blunt with you, it's still a bad close. Lines such as Any discussion regarding converting the template into something else can be had elsewhere reflect that you are not very familiar with TfD, where the D stands for "discussion", not "deletion" as at AfD.
There were significantly more !votes for some sort of modification than just for keeping (at a very rough count, about 14 to 9), and some of the keep !votes were just arguing "I like to know when a student has edited a page", which isn't an argument against converting to a talk page message and thus I would've expected to be discounted.
Regarding the weighting, you wrote in your expansion that However, talk page messages are often archived, which makes it so that information no longer appears unless you go digging through the archives as a rebuttal of the argument for conversion to a talk page message. This is, unless I missed it, not a point that was raised in the discussion itself, which raises supervote concerns. It also isn't particularly compelling: the obvious response is that, if an article is active enough that discussions on its talk page are being archived, it's also likely to be monitored well enough that contributions by student editors will have been reviewed and integrated by the time that happens.
Given the above, I would ask that you please reconsider your close. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 05:09, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking of {{DNAU}}, but that works too. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 11:47, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but I don't have time to keep re-evaluating it for everyone who comes along. I have too many IRL things on my plate. I've completely undone the closure and you can have someone else do it. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:35, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Russian Academy of Natural Sciences

Could you please rollback Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) to the last stable version, or change the protection to partial from full? All I'm seeing is a number of new SPA accounts and ips edit-warring there. --Hipal (talk) 17:09, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Nihonjoe: in applying protection, the last stable version was not protected. Instead, you've protected the edit-warred revisions. Is that what you intended?  JGHowes  talk 17:36, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@JGHowes: I simply protected the article to prevent it from being reverted during the discussion. We can always restore it to whichever version is deemed appropriate by the discussion. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:37, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
My understanding is that full protection is a last resort, not something triggered by SPA's and ip's that can be addressed in other ways. --Hipal (talk) 19:12, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Full protection can be implemented any time there are concerns over continued edit warring. It's only for two weeks, too, which should allow plenty of time for consensus to be reached. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:24, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Nihonjoe: Hello, I saw your year calendar editation, and it is absolutely all right. FYI

An then-new-ish (since July 2020) editor you blocked late last year has a new, unblocked declared alt-account.[1]

It's been a few months so if his current edits are not themselves disruptive, perhaps a "block with an opportunity to unblock ONE account, with appropriate conditions" either immediately or after a short "block-evasion-penalty-period" (say, 4-5 days, the age of the new account) might be in order. If his new account's contributions are similar to the old one, then it's just a routine block-evading sock. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 18:34, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Davidwr: Looks like they were blocked by Dreamy Jazz. The best thing to do in cases like this is to report them on WP:SPI. They get handled faster that way. Thanks again! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:03, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
SPI would've almost certainly led to a fast-block without a nuanced comparison between the two editors' conduct. Since you blocked the first editor, you were presumably more familiar with his past than others, and could make a comparison. That said, if Praxidicae took the time to look into this and came to the conclusion that the new account's edits were the "same disruptive edits", well, that pretty much closes the case. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 00:02, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
