best Win Ever

How did the player score 13 goals for the team if it was their first win at 5-0? I don't see how that works.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Resitate (talkcontribs) 20:22, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Manual references

I just added a reference on some material I added to the article, but it didn't come out correctly. Apparently the references here were done by hand, i.e. without the <references /> tag. I've never seen it that way before. I didn't want to disturb anything, so I didn't attempt to fix my reference. - PhilipR (talk) 07:29, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lede section suggestions and rewrite

I was asked by Jaime070996 (talk · contribs) to help rewrite and expand the WP:LEDE, so here goes;

How I normally try to write a good lede;

The first statement, about what it is, is very important. The current one is not too bad, really;

The El Salvador national football team represents El Salvador in international association football and is controlled by the El Salvador Football Federation

The only issue being the duplication of "El Salvador" 3 times, which is tricky to avoid.

For the rest of the lede, I usually try to read through the whole article, trying to take the absolute essential points from each part. I'll show my notes below. The parts in (brackets) are 'possibly' not worth mentioning, maybe excess details;

History

Began in 1921 (Gustavo "Taviche" Marroquin scored 5 goals against to-be-rivals Honduras) Competed in two World Cup competitions, 1970 and 1982. (2010 FESFUT suspended by FIFA due to government interference)

Competitive record

Concaf 10 times; '63 and '81 runners-up; 77 3rd place; (2002 and 2003 qtr finals) CCCF champs in 1943, 2nd in '41 and '61 Also UNCAF (3rd x 3), Pan American Games recordand Olympics Central American and Caribbean Games 2 x Gold

Kit

Maybe a v brief mention - colors, describe maybe?

Squad/callups

The only note, really, is - 21 man squad

Unless there is some extra-specially-notable player, in which case, they might be worth noting

Stats

Top scorers; Jorge "Mágico" González 41 Raúl Díaz Arce 39 Most appearances: Luis Guevara Mora 89

Staff

Manager José Luis Rugamas

Honours

- covered above

Using the above logic, and my own judgement/wording, I've rewritten the lede as;

The El Salvador national football team represents El Salvador in international association football and is controlled by the FESFUT. After the formation in 1921, the player Gustavo "Taviche" Marroquin scored 5 goals against the Honduras, beginning a lengthy rivalty.

The team competed in two World Cup competitions, in 1970 and 1982. They were CCCF champions in 1943, and second-placed in 1941 and 1961. They have competed in the CONCACAF Gold Cup ten times, finishing as runners-up in 1963 and 1981. La Selecta also competed in the UNCAF Nations Cup, the Pan American Games, the Olympics, and have achieved two gold medals in the Central American and Caribbean Games.

They play in a mostly sky-blue kit, which from 2008 included the Mitre logo.

The top-scoring player is Jorge "Mágico" González (41 goals), the next closest being Raúl Díaz Arce with 39. Luis Guevara Mora is the player with the most caps, at 89. The manager is José Luis Rugamas.

I have done my best, but I'm sure that this is not entirely accurate; however, I place it as lede because I hope it is better than the current one.

In particular, please note that the lede should adequately summarize the article, but should not include information that is not elaborated upon elsewhere.

For that specific reason, I have not included mention of the Football War - this should certainly be in the article, but as it is not, in my talk of rewriting the lede, I could not help with that.

Other Competition

On the "Other tournament records" section the Copa Centroamericana and the CCCF Championship Record are in a table. Do you thing it would be better to put the "Central American and Caribbean Games," "Olympic Games record," and "Pan American Games record" as a table to? I would love to do it if you let me.

Fair use rationale for File:FESFUT logo.svg

File:FESFUT logo.svg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a non-free use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

GA request

I have put this up as the history of the page hasn't been updated since 2013 and their is sections in the article that isn't cited. An example of this is the fact that the CONCACAF Championship record summary doesn't have any citations in that particular section of the article. Matt294069 (talk) 00:55, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaime070996: Could you look at this. It doesn't seem like much is needed (an update and some sources). AIRcorn (talk) 23:15, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Matt294069: I agree with you, this article does need an update and also has some incorrectly formatted references and many dead links. It could also use some images too. Matthewishere0 (talk) 15:17, 18 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Observations

GA review (see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose, spelling, and grammar): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
  • HTML document size: 820 kB
  • Prose size (including all HTML code): 75 kB
  • References (including all HTML code): 110 kB
  • Wiki text: 135 kB
  • Prose size (text only): 37 kB (6304 words) "readable prose size"
  • References (text only): 14 kB
  • Page design and layout compares favourably with other pages in Category:Central American national association football teams
  1. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (reference section): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR): d (copyvio and plagiarism):
  • Infobox ranking appears to be out. https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/SLV gives a lowest ranking of 156
  • Reference 4 goes to a sports website. It does not go to the website of the governing body, Salvadoran Football Federation?
  • Reference 8 is a dead link.
  • Reference 9 is available on the Wayback Machine.
  • 1940's has a citation needed tag about Dr. Luis Rivas Palacios as president.
  • 1950's has no citations for any matches except the win against Mexico. Needs sources.
  • The paragraph on the 1970 World Cup and the Football War does not have sufficient citations. There are a lot of facts in that para with no citations, except reference to a book about War and Treaties?
  • jostling the Bermudan linesman, Keith Dunstan, has a [citation needed] tag.
  • 1980's - there are no citations for the World Cup qualification in the first paragraph.
  • Reference 31 is a dead link.
  • Reference 33 is incorrect, it is for a USSR - El Salvador match, not a match against Hungary.
  • goal score in match against Hungary has a citation needed tag: encourage them to score more.[citation needed]. Find it or remove the statement.
  • ditto could not afford to bring a full squad.[citation needed]
  • ditto The remaining uniforms were said to have been taken away by the association.[citation needed]
  • The paragraph about the World Cup campaign in Spain has 5 citation needed tags and insufficient references. It needs a lot of work.
  • In the 2000's, reporting of who scored goals in matches is not relevant. This article is about the team, not the individuals, it is not a personality top scorer list. This is out of style with the remainder of the article. Remove individual goal scorers.
  • drop with goals from Ramón Sánchez and Dennis Alas.
  • drop with goals from Lázár Szentes and Ferenc Csongrádi for Hungary and two goals from Luis Ramírez Zapata for El Salvador.
  • drop after a goal by Roger Espinoza
  • drop with two goals by Osael Romero.
  • References 60, 61 to FIFA are dead links.
  • drop with goals scored by Rodolfo Zelaya (2) and Christian Javier Bautista.
  • drop with goals from Bautista, Luis Anaya (2) and Xavier García
  • drop with goals by Víctor Turcios, Steve Purdy, Jaime Alas and Herbert Sosa.
  • drop The last of these was the thousandth goal scored by the national team this is not a relevant statistic.
  • this is poor expression: earned him the wrath of the public.[citation needed] Who earned the wrath of the public? Where is the citation?
  • All the material about the new coach Juan de Dios Castillo does not have citations.
  • The entire paragraph for 2020's has no citations. It is also written in a style reminiscent of puffery and MOS:PEACOCK. This section needs reliable sources and rewriting.
  • Reliable sources are needed for all the content in the first paragraph of match fixing.
  • Reference 78 does not address the topic. An archival link is needed.
  • The Borussia squad listing is irrelevant material for a page about the El Salvador national football team. Drop all of it.
  • Reference 80, 81 (on the Wayback Machine) are both dead links.
  1. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  • There are 13 citation needed tags on this page.
  • The Early history section is good in its coverage. Online sources are excellent.
  • Updates to the page tend to focus on current squad and recent call ups, top ten appearances, game history, player statistics, like this.
  • Little attention is paid to history in page edits. One has to scroll back to 2013 to find detailed attention given to the history and activities of this team.
  • It is clear that the current national squad has been transformed into a much younger team over the past few years. There is no coverage of this.
  • There is no coverage of the recent strong results and wins in the current national campaigns. Surely 7-0, 4-0 wins deserve coverage???
  1. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  • Neutral point of view is presented in the article.
  1. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  • Page created 26 September 2004
  • Page has 6,574 by 1,659 editors
  • Links to this page = 2,084
  • External links = 123
  • 90 day page views = 61,883
  • Daily page views average 680
  • article is currently class (Listed September 28, 2011)
  • Examination of page history reveals a lot of IP address edits, mobile edits.
  • History is slanted towards the current team updates, recent call-ups, player statistics.
  • No edit warring is observed in page history except reversion of unexplained edits. Page is considered stable.
  1. It is illustrated by images and other media, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free content have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  • Page has 2 images
  • File:FESFUT logo.svg = SVG (non free logo ) used with specified application qualifies as fair use under the Copyright law of the United States.
  • File:Vista aerea Estadio Cusca.jpg = Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license.
  • This page could use more images. The link to Commons reveals resources are available.
  1. Notifying Editors:
  • Page Creator Jaime070996 has not contributed significantly since 7 July 2019
  • Editor Dennisruizsv
  • Editor SpinnDoctor
  • Editor Intruder007
  • Editor BKReruns
  • Editor Danielmordor
  • A total of five involved editors were able to be notified.

  1. Overall:
  • Individual scorers are not necessary and belong in match reports, which are included in the schedule section commencing 2020
  • This page would benefit from having the Internet Archive bot run over it to repair all the dead links.
  • There is poor sourcing in recent history with 13 citation needed tags on the page, most notably in the 1980 section, which has been poorly sourced.
  • The 2020's section, Match fixing also lack proper sources.
  • Recent coaching and national selection has resulted a rather large transformation to a much younger team with different skillbase and talents. This is not covered in this article.
  • This article will not retain its Good Article status unless a lot of work is done on it. --Whiteguru (talk) 06:19, 29 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
