Konidela Siva Sankara Vara Prasad born on August 22, 1955, more popularly known as Chiranjeevi, is a popular Telugu film actor fondly known by his fans as Mega Star.

Family

He was born in Mogalthur, West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India to Konidala Venkata Rao and Anjana Devi. Chiranjeevi has two brothers (Nagendra Babu and Pawan Kalyan) and two sisters (Vijaya Durga and Madhavi). He has been married to Surekha (daughter of Allu Ramalingiah) since February 20, 1980. Chiranjeevi has one son, Ram Charan Tej and two daughters Sushmita and Srija. His nephew, Allu Arjun, is also a Tollywood actor.

Career

Chiranjeevi debuted with Pranam Khareedu. After playing a series of negative and minor roles in films such as Manavoori Pandavulu, Mosagadu,Ranikasula rangamma and 47 Rojulu, he got his first breakthrough with Khaidi in the direction of A. Kodandarami Reddy. A series of good performances in movies such as Rudraveena, Challenge, Chantabbai, Intiguttu, and Subhalekha established him as a great actor by the end of 1980s. His stardom rose at the same time with a series of hits like Gang leader ( remade into Hindi as Aaj ka goondaraj), Rowdy Alludu and the pinnacle of his success 'Gharana Mogudu'. The latter was the highpoint in his career of that time and got him a cover story on The Week - 'Bigger than Bachan'. After this career high, most of the mid 90s saw a downturn in Chiranjeevi's fortunes inspite of some remarkable performances like in 'Apathbandhavudu'. He started resurrecting his image again with good family entertainers like 'Choodalani Vundhi', Master and Annayya. But expectations were soaring for him to get back to his strength which was non-stop entertainment aimed at the masses. In 2002, his only release was Indra, which got him the much desired blockbuster and ended up being the highest grossing movie in Tollywood at the time. He also won the Filmfare Best Actor Award (Telugu) and the Nandi Award for Best Actor for his performance in Indra. His only release of 2003, Tagore, became a big hit and re-wrote many records. His most recent film was Stalin, cast opposite Trisha Krishnan and in the direction of A. R. Murugadoss.

Chiranjeevi's exceptional acting, his competence as a dancer and his charitable acts have endeared him to millions of telugu people. He is one of the greatest star evers to grace the Tollywood screen.

His next upcoming film will be Shankardada Zindabad, which is a remake of Lage Raho Munnabhai. Choreographer-turned-director Prabhu Deva will be directing it.Chiru brother Power Star also playing the roll of Abhishek in Hindi.

On October 2, 1998, he founded the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust (CCT), which includes Chiranjeevi Blood and Eye Banks. It is the state's largest recipient of Blood and Eye Donations[1]. The Blood Bank of the CCT helped over 80,000 people and the Eye Bank has helped about 1000 people in the state of Andhra Pradesh since its opening.[2]

So far around 3.5 lakh people have pledged their eyes to CCT so far, giving 1600 people eye sight through CCT. CCT has also won the "Best Voluntary Blood Bank Award" by the AP State Government for the past 4 years.

On June 10, 2006, The President of India, Dr. Abdul Kalam, inaugurated the Chiranjeevi Charitable Foundation (CCF) at the Jubilee Hills Check post in Hyderabad.[3]

However, despite being the highest paid movie actor in telugu movie industry, his personal charitable contributions are unknown.

Awards

In January 2006, Dr.Chiranjeevi was honored with the Padma Bhushan.[4], the third highest civilian award in India. In November 2006, Chiranjeevi was awarded with a honorary doctorate[5] by Andhra University for his services to the Telugu film industry and for his social work....
