I'm not aware of any wikipedian meetings in Utah. You want live training? I'm not aware of any. If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them. McKay (talk) 17:52, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Rosie.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Rosie.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:30, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube

[edit]

you can link to anything you want to link by enclosing the link inside square brackets with the desired link text following [http://example.com/ like this]-> like this. But note that References usually go in a reference section, and most don't really consider YouTube a reliable source. McKay 08:16, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Friend's Image

[edit]

If he wants it on Wikipedia, he can do one of a few things: Upload it to wikipedia himself (which whould license it under Creative Commons, GFDL, or released into the public domain) Or he has to state to you that he wishes it be licensed under one of those licenses (or into the public domain). Once that's been done, it can be uploaded and used on a userpage. McKay (talk) 08:55, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, it seems like you've got the concept a little confused in your head. Read up on Public domain. Once you've read through that, if you have any other questions, Let me know. McKay (talk) 07:28, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Added Categories

[edit]

OK, so I added the Columbus Center to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Libraries_in_Utah, and I am thinking of the many other things that could be added there. I also created a new category http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Outdoor_sculptures_in_Utah that was almost instantly nominated for deletion. Argyleist (talk) 06:38, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE So I walked over to the Columbus Center yesterday and got a hold of some historical information, and took a few pictures. I think it has become quite a nice article now. Argyleist (talk) 21:26, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE 2/12/08 I wanted you to see the 2 categories I created and that I plan on improving as part of our class wikipedia project.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Outdoor_sculptures_in_Utah

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Parks_in_Salt_Lake_City

Also I started 2 new articles last night and I am going to spend some time improving each of them.

HUMA 1310 on 2/5/08

[edit]

I'm sorry, I will have to miss class today (2/5/08). We are unexpectedly having to move out of our basement TODAY (who ever heard of a contractor coming EARLIER than anticipated? It's amazing!)

See you Thursday,

The prodigal student asks your forgiveness...

[edit]

Dr. Comollo:

I sincerely and truly apologize for having had to miss so many of our classes. So much turmoil has been occurring in my life lately, and though it's no excuse for my extremely poor attendance, I hope that you can forgive me and that I can still pass your course.

To assure you that I have not given up on the class, and that I certainly do care about what you would like us to be doing, I wanted to tell you that you inspired the Wikipedia page I have decided finally to do: I want to write an article, though it may be brief, on Fortunato Anselmo. He sounds like such a fascinating and inspiring Utah Italian.

To this end, I am going to begin going to the library to gather my research. If you have any direct resources which you could recommend, I will be sure to utilize such.

Thank you very much for your understanding thus far, and I want you to know that, barring some emergency (with my wife's pregnancy or otherwise), I will miss no more class from this day forward.

Utah Authors

[edit]

Adrian...sorry haven't checked in on Wikipedia for a while. I created a separate wiki of Utah authors that can serve as a list: [1]. I would just as soon get most of those authors into Wikipedia. There might be a few suspect people in the list though. --Steven.Harris (T | C) 15:53, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Professor!

[edit]

Dr. Comollo:

I have been miserably sick this week, but I wanted to let you know that have begun work on the Fortunato Anselmo page. I'd love for you to take a look at it, and give me your feedback.

Thanks!

List of Diversity Organizations in Utah

[edit]

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article List of Diversity Organizations in Utah, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. BJBot (talk) 16:00, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On my Talk page, you wrote:

Hi, concerning the article List of Diversity Organizations in Utah, is it the topic that is not good or the fact of the many external links? In this last case, it can be fixed by eliminating the "linkfarm" and put the links in the "notes" section. Please let me know.

Concerning the topic itself: I think that there are already similar lists in wikipedia:

  • List of disability organisations in Singapore
  • List of ethnic interest groups in Canada
  • List of youth organisations in Singapore

And more. I think that it would be fair to propose for delition also the similar ones, unless it is a problem of the links to external sources. Adrian Comollo (talk) 15:26, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

I was not the one to nominate for deletion; I think it's fine to have the page. I just deleted a category and set the default sort key. It looks like User:SatyrTN was the one to nominate for deletion. Libcub (talk) 17:14, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Family tree

[edit]

Hello - I'm not the expert on this (maybe you could ask WikiProject Genealogy), but if the family has several notable people, there is no reason why you couldn't make a family tree article. For instance, Beecher family is a good example, and also Keynes family, Debré family... I know these families are all relatively wealthy, but they're not outrageously rich noble families or anything. Anyway, that's not what matters - it's the notability that matters. ugen64 (talk) 20:21, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Touching bases...

[edit]

Dr. Comollo:

I just wanted to let you know that I am not dead. (Ha, ha.) I should be in class tomorrow - I do not believe there is anything that should prohibit me.

As for my second choice for a wikipedia article to build, I am thinking about writing about the History of Freemasonry in Utah. What do you think?

At any length, just wanted to send you a note to say I hope that I am not forgotten.

--Fighter Kyu (talk) 22:58, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Currently we are not really doing much at the project. In fact, hardly anyone has contributed in any way in a year and a half. I restructured the page slightly but don't have time to really clean it up or monitor it. If you have some friends, feel free to reinvigorate the project, but currently it is slightly (very) dormant and doesn't seem to likely to revive from me. Sorry for the let down, but feel free to do what you want with the project, I won't be offended!
Darius von Whaleyland, Great Khan of the Barbarian Horde 05:28, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Genealogy is still a bit of a no-no on Wikipedia unless the vast majority of the people are notable. In those cases, I usually use one of the various genealogical trees from something line Henry VIII of England's page. There is also the template that is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy but unfortunately that never took off, even though I like it much better. If you want to do more personal genealogy, there is an official wikia site at Familypedia that allows any genealogies, I believe. I am not saying you can't upload a genealogy onto Wikipedia itself, but make sure you have sources for everything and that the person(s) are at least a little notable, even if it is only locally. I hope that helps.

Italian Friend

[edit]

I'd love to answer your questions, but I think I need more information. Can you give me a link to the article? Is it on the Italian Wikipedia, or the English Wikipedia. I am familiar with the english wikipedia rules, and I can help you there, and I think that the Italian wikipedia might have similar rules, but I'm not sure. WP:CANVASS might be the topic you're talking about. Other than that, I'd need more information. What happened? What did they claim was their reasoning? McKay (talk) 14:25, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi from a Utah wikipedian

[edit]

>Hi David, do you know of meetings for wikipedians in Utah? Please let me know, Adrian Comollo (talk) 21:00, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Adrian. I'm sorry for the long delay in replying to your message. I don't know of any meeting for Wikipedians in Utah. Because of my disagreeable encounters with other Wikipedians (including being erased from the political Cannon family page by those who seemed bothered by my politics), from Utah and otherwise, I purposely avoid them and use Wikipedia rather than contribute to it, aside from my User page where I get left alone. I notice you authored a biography about Will Bagley. I worked with Will about 20 years ago when we were both technical writers. Since then, I did marketing. I'm also part Padanian, so your Italian Utahns writing was interesting to me, too.

Proposed deletion of Rob Miller

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Rob Miller, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Dhartung | Talk 16:32, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mentorship Committee

[edit]

I'm contacting you because your name is listed at Wikipedia:Meetup/Utah.

Please consider reviewing my edit at Wikipedia:Mentorship#Unintended consequences. In the search for a mentor deemed acceptable by ArbCom, I view this as a useful context for discussing what I have in mind.

There is no obvious congruence between your editing interests and mine, but perhaps the disjunction presents a novel opportunity.

Will you consider looking into whether you might agree to join others in a Mentorship Committee which advises me?

In any case -- even if you are disinclined to pursue the primary thrust of this diff, I wonder if I might be able to tweak your curiosity with an article about 95-year-old Patrick Lennox Tierney? He is a Japanologist academic in the field of art history, an emeritus professor of the University of Utah, a former Curator of Japanese Art at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and a former Commissioner of Art and Monuments during the Allied Occupation of Japan (1945-1952). I think this elderly man still lives near the University. Tierney came to my attention because the Japanese government conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 2007.
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Tierney's life concerns his work for the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP), Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Tierney's office was near MacArthur's suite in SCAP headquarters. Tierney was an eyewitness on the day Emperor Hirohito came to offer a formal apology; but when the emperor arrived, MacArthur refused to admit him or acknowledge him. Issues which might have been addressed were allowed to remain open, with consequences which unfolded across the decades which followed. In 2006, Tierney made an effort to explain his understanding of what he had personally observed: "Apology is a very important thing in Japan. With us, we don't apologize unless we get caught with our hand in the cookie jar, but for the Japanese, there is a very strong sense of what an apology means." According to popular historian Herbert Bix in Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan, "MacArthur's truly extraordinary measures to save Hirohito from trial as a war criminal had a lasting and profoundly distorting impact on Japanese understanding of the lost war."

Among a prospective mentor's many burdens, the most difficult would involve (a) helping me discern why or when I should apologize or (b) helping me to explain why or when I will not apologize in a wiki-context. --Tenmei (talk) 02:30, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article List of diversity organizations in Utah has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Just a WP:LINKFARM of non-notable organizations, college clubs, etc. in the state of Utah. There's no apparent criterion for being a "diversity organization": the Unity Baptist Church, Thai Student Association of Utah, and Salvation Army of Utah have absolutely nothing to do with each other except that someone thinks that because minorities are involved in them, or served by them, they tie into a vague, overarching sense of "diversity." Appears to have been created by the Salt Lake County Mayor’s Office of Diversity.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.  Glenfarclas  (talk) 05:28, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. The article Fair Boundaries of Utah has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Outside of one 2011 article, which is a name drop, I cannot verify this organization's existence, let alone notability. Their website no longer exists

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Wiknic at Salt Lake City Public Library on August 27

[edit]

I couldn't resist trying to get the gang together. Wanna join? KarenJoyce (talk) 03:22, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I seriously considered UW-Madison as a youngster, but wound up at Purdue.
Also, a genealogist's opinion on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/WikiTree (2nd nomination) would be welcome. I'm in Team Keep, as I'm a volunteer leader there, so I'll disclose that in a vote later this weekend. KarenJoyce (talk) 03:32, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Interested in attending the Great North American Wiknic in Salt Lake City?

If you are interested in our Utah Wiknic on Sunday, August 27, 2023, please visit Wikipedia:Meetup/Utah/Wiknic 2023 and add your response.
Regrets are fine, and help to quiet the sound of crickets.
Not in the Utah area? Check out the Great North American Wiknic!
