Rani Mukerji (Bengali: রাণী মুখার্জী), born on March 21, 1978, is a six-time Filmfare Award-winning Indian film actress. She shot to fame during the late 1990s after starring in the romantic comedy, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, opposite Shahrukh Khan. Since then, Mukerji has been consistently topping Filmfare's annual power list of top Bollywood female stars for three consecutive years (2004-2006).[1] An unprecedented Rs. 4 million was paid to Mukerji for her role in Baabul.[2] As of 2006, her total box office impact is worth well over Rs. 5 billion.[3] Today, she has emerged as one of the finest and most successful actresses in the country.[4][5] Her career includes the top grossing films which have collectively placed her amongst the top heroines of all-time.[6]

Career

Background

She comes from a film-oriented family of Bengali origin: Her father Ram Mukherjee is a retired director and also one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios. Her mother Krishna was a former playback singer. Her brother Raja Mukherjee is a film producer, now turned director. Her maternal aunt, Debashree Roy, was a Bengali-film actress and her cousin Kajol is a popular Bollywood actress.

Mukerji is a trained Odissi dancer. She started out in tenth grade. Her guru was also the teacher of Hema Malini.[7] While in school at the age of 14, she did a cameo role in her father's Bengali film Biyar Phool. She then continued with her studies and graduated from Maneckjee Cooper High School in Juhu. Later, she was enrolled in her first year at Mithibai College in Mumbai. Soon after in 1994, Salim Akhtar, a family friend, offered her a film called Aa Gale Lag Jaa but her father was against it as she was too young. Moreover, Mukerji wasn't at all interested in becoming an actress. So, she turned down the offer and Urmila Matondkar was casted instead.

Two years later, Salim Akhtar came up with another offer and insisted on her playing the protagonist of Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1996). After a long discussion with her father, she agreed to do the film, at the age of 18. When the film was not successful at the box office, Mukerji landed up in college all over again.[8]

Breakthrough, 1998-2002

Karan Johar first approached her for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai upon Shahrukh Khan's recommendation.[9] Her first release in 1998 was Ghulam opposite Aamir Khan. It was a big hit.[10] The song 'Aati Kya Khandala' suddenly caught everyone's attention and the actress received rave reviews. This is how the masses got to recognize her and people started calling her the 'Khandala Girl'.[11] Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) came next, also starring superstars Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. The movie was a blockbuster. For the latter, she received her first Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actress category.[12] The actress was also offered Mani Ratnam's Dil Se but dates were a problem.[13]

After her instant stardom, she signed on several projects. Unfortunately, most of the movies did not do well at the box office.[14] 2000 was her most quantitative year in terms of movies released. Badal was one of the highest grossing films of that year.[15] On top, her films with bankable actor, Salman Khan didn't turn out so well. Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega (2000), Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye (2000) and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001) all did average business respectively.[16][17]

2002 marked her entry into Yash Raj Films. Since then, she held at least one Yash Raj Film on hand excluding the year 2003. Mujhse Dosti Karoge! opposite Hrithik Roshan was her first film with the biggest film production house in India. Although, the movie failed in India, it generated great business overseas, especially in the United Kingdom.[18] Her next release was again with the Yash Raj banner. She played the lead role of a medical student in Saathiya. The motion picture re-established her fame as it was amongst the top five grossing movies of the year.[19] The film was equally critically successful which earned the actress a myriad of honors and rave reviews.[20]

Success, 2003-present

In 2003, her new look in Chalte Chalte opposite Shah Rukh Khan was widely noticed[21][22]; the film was a hit. At the end of the year, Mukerji ventured into her first comic role.[23] Chori Chori finally released after much rather delay as the producer had passed away during filming.

2004 was a much significant year in her career. Her performances in the critically acclaimed Yuva and the commercially successful Hum Tum merited her all the accolades at all the major award ceremonies - the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for the former, and the Filmfare Best Actress Award for the latter.[24] Furthermore, Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara was the top grossing movie of the year.[25] Her performance as a Pakistani lawyer in the love saga was also critically acclaimed and earned her even more award nominations with a number of wins.

In 2005, Mukerji starred in four high-profile films: Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black, Shaad Ali's Bunty Aur Babli, Amol Palekar's Paheli and Ketan Mehta's The Rising. As she worked with the biggest banners in Bollywood, with the exception of Paheli, all three movies were among the top grossers of the year[26]. She received critical acclaim for every film, especially her performance in Black for which she won all of the "Best Actress" awards at the major film ceremonies. When Bhansali first came to Mukerji with the offer, she turned it down. The actress stated that she was not confident enough to play such a role as she had no knowledge on the deaf and blind.[27] Once the director put faith in her, she agreed to do it and intensely studied sign language with professionals. To prepare for her role in Black, the actress had to go through six to seven months of training at the Hellen Keller Institute in Mumbai.[28] She even wore dark-tinted contact lenses to cover up her trademark greenish-brown eyes. While Bunty Aur Babli surfaced as the biggest hit of the year, it also substantiated her fourth successive hit. Undoubtedly, these successes established Mukerji as one of the industry's most bankable stars.[29] Hence, the actress was honored by a largely foreign audience of 50,000 at the Casablanca Film Festival (2005) in Morocco where four of her movies were presented.[30]

The actress was offered the lead role in Hollywood film, The Namesake but owing to clashing dates with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, she couldn't commit to Mira Nair's project.[31] Mukerji had two releases in 2006. The first was Karan Johar's KANK with Shahrukh Khan. It was one of the most successful movies of the year.[32] Mukerji was also invited to the Toronto International Film Festival to promote the movie but due to her tight schedule of Ta Ra Rum Pum in New York City, she opted not to go.[33] Her next release was B.R. Chopra's Baabul which celebrated the production house’s 50th year in cinema. Mukerji signed the movie subsequent to her parents' request who wanted her to present the reality of widows in India, the focus of the film.[34] Although much hyped, the movie did not do well at the box office in India[35] but proved to be a hit overseas.[36] Later in 2007, one of Mukerji's sari's in Baabul, designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee, was auctioned off at a charity dinner. The proceeds went towards a home for girls who live on the Howrah platforms.

Her first release of the year 2007 was Ta Ra Rum Pum where she played a full-fledged mother for the first time on celluloid.[37] Mukerji instantly agreed to do this movie as she could identify the character's situation in a family crisis and has modelled her performance on her mother[38]. She went through intense training to slim down as the role required her to portray a modern look in skimpy western outfits.[39] Mukerji was even coached in piano lessons simply to get her posture and finger movements accurate as she plays a pianist in the movie.[40] Ultimately, the motion picture fared an above-average status at the box office. Meanwhile, she has joined hands with her brother in setting up a TV production. The whole concept was only conceived seven months earlier and will now be set rolling.[41]

Personal life

Media Speculation

Gossip columnists have linked Mukerji to many industry figures, but she has strongly denied every single rumor of romance.[42] Several gossip columns have also claimed that she is regularly in feud with some of the Bollywood actors and actresses, but Mukerji has denied this.[43]

Name Change

The actress changed the English transliteration of her surname from Mukherjee to Mukerji several years ago. At the time, it was reported that she did this for numerological reasons. In 2006, Mukerji stated that numerology was not a concern; her name had been put down as Mukerji on her passport, and she wanted to be consistent.[44]

Controversies

In June 2005, Mukerji was widely criticized following the publication of an interview with British newspaper Desi Xpress. Mukerji was asked to name her idol and she replied, "Adolf Hitler".[45] However, in an interview with TimesNow a year later, she denied ever mentioning Hitler's name.[46]

In November 2006, Mukerji was shooting a film in Varanasi when avid fans crowded the set. Security personnel beat the crowd back with sticks.[47] A media storm followed as various groups insisted that Mukerji should have stopped the security guards. Mukerji later issued a guarded apology.[48]

In the media

Mukerji was a guest of honour at a state dinner to greet General Pervez Musharraf along with the Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh.[49] The government found out that she was Begum Musharraf's favourite Bollywood star. Hence, Mukerji was the only Bollywood star on the top elite guest list.[50]

In 2005, after being on the Filmfare's Power List as the only woman in the February 2005 issue, Mukerji finally declared in an interview with "After Hrs" that she is the top actress in the country.[51]

She admitted in an interview that as an actor, awards are really important for her. They simply boost up her confidence. She also confessed that at times, she makes surprise visits to theatres to observe the immediate reaction of the audience to scrutinize over her acting skills.[52]

In early 2007, the actress was requested to perform at Vaux-le-Vicomte for Lakshmi Mittal's guests at his daughter Vanisha's £30 million/$65 million wedding.[53] She enacted Vanisha's role opposite Saif Ali Khan in one of the world's most expensive weddings.[54]

Famous commitments

Humanitarian work

Besides acting in films, Mukerji has associated herself with several other commercial and non-profit organizations. In March 2004, Mukerji visited the sandy dunes of Rajasthan to boost the morales of the jawans. It was for a show where entertainers and stars visit Indian troops in far-flung regions to encourage them along with the NDTV team.[55]

In February 2005, Mukerji performed at the HELP! Telethon Concert to help raise money for the victims of Tsunami in company with Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan, Fardeen Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Lara Dutta and Malaika Arora Khan among many others.[56]

She was highly involved in the Temptations 2005 show in New Delhi. The actress helped to raise funds for the National Centre For Promotional of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), a leading disabled rights' group.[57] Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra were also amongst the many who contributed to this cause.[58]

In 2006, Mukerji celebrated her birthday with the students of the Helen Keller Institute for the Deaf and Blind, whom she had befriended while doing research for her role as a blind and deaf girl in Black.[59] She has given due credit for her award-winning performance in that movie to the students.[60]

Mukerji donated her prize money, her half-share of 50 lakh rupees from her 2007 appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati with Preity Zinta, to the Holy Family Hospital.[61] She said that this institution looks after children with heart problems which is a major setback in India.

World tours

The actress has been an active stage performer and has participated in numerous world tours. Her first world tour was in the year 1999 with Aamir Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Akshaye Khanna and Twinkle Khanna. It was called the Magnificent Five.[62] The show was widely watched in every city where it was showcased.

Five years later, Temptations 2004 came along. It was the most successful Bollywood concert in its time and it broke all records. The actress performed alongside Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal and Priyanka Chopra in nineteen stage shows across the globe.[63]

Special events

She also appeared along with various other Bollywood actors at the Closing Ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian culture, on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Delhi.[64] For her three minutes dance act alongside Saif Ali Khan [65], she was reportedly paid 1.5 crore rupees.[66]
