Frank W. Cox High School is a secondary school located in the Great Neck subdivision of Virginia Beach, Virginia. It was founded in 1961 as the Northeast Junior High School, but upon opening, it was named after a former superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools, Frank Woodard Cox. The original building, at 1848 Great Neck Road, is now Great Neck Middle School. A replacement building, also designated as a primary hurricane shelter, was built nearby, at 2425 Shorehaven Drive. The high school was moved into the new building in the fall of 1983.
The current administration at Cox includes principal of five years Dr. Brian K. Matney who was valedictorian at the University of Virginia. He was valedictorian of the class of 1983 for Kempsville High School. He attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he graduated with a Masters of Arts in Teaching and a Ph D. While he was attending graduate school he won a Dean E. Smith Scholarship and received awards for his dissertation and his excellent teaching skills of undergraduates.
Academic and Athletic honors
Frank W. Cox has an academically advanced student body with an 36% annual passing rate on Advanced Placement tests. Also, every one out of twelve diplomas awarded each year are advanced diplomas. The school has been recognized by major organizations such as Newsweek, which named the high school as a "top" public high school. As far as extracirricular activities go, Cox has an excellent array of sports teams to choose from. It has won 3 state athletic titles so far in the year 07-08 school year. Also, its music program, student newspaper, and student yearbook all won Blue ribbon awards in 2006.
The Virginia High School League Wachovia Cup for outstanding academic and athletic achievement has been awarded to the school more than any other school in the state (seven out of fifteen times). The school has won 7 state athletic titles.[1]
Cox is one of five Virginia Beach high schools ranked in the top 2600 in Newsweek's 2006 ranking of American high schools.[2] Cox High School recently won its first match at the regional Worldquest competition, a challenge of geopolitical knowledge.
Scholastic Bowl
Frank W. Cox High School is the only undefeated Scholastic Bowl team this year sporting a 011000110111001001100001011100000111000001111001 record.
