Prince of Songkla University (also spelled Songkhla) was the first university of Southern Thailand. It was established in 1967. As of 2003, it has 24,011 students.

The university is named after Mahidol Adulyadej, Prince of Songkla (Songkhla). In the first year the students studied at a temporary campus in Bangkok, 1968 the permanent campus in Pattani was established. In 1971 the campus in Hat Yai was opened, which is now its biggest campus, having more than 50% of the students. Further campuses were opened in Phuket (1977), Surat Thani (1990) and Trang (1991). In addition, Pattani campus may separate in the future.

Pattani Campus

Prince of Songkla Univer-sity, Pattani Campus. was called University of Southern Thailand when it was established in 1966 at Tambon Rusamilae in Pattani's Maung district. At present, it has 6,244 Muslim students, 2,542 Buddhist students, 47 Catholic students and 115 students of other religions.
