Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati or IITG), an autonomous institute for education and research in science, engineering and technology located in Guwahati, in north east India. It is the sixth member of the IIT fraternity. IIT Guwahati is growing into one of the top technological institutes in India, primarily focused on research in engineering and science, and the teaching of undergraduates.

History

The history of IIT Guwahati traces its roots to the 1985 Assam Accord signed between the AASU and the Govt. of India, which mentions the general improvement in education facilities in Assam and specifically the setting up of an IIT.

IITG was established in 1994 by an act of parliament and its academic programme commenced in 1995.[1] The area identified for campus was on the northern bank of Brahmaputra River and was a swampy land. The construction of the campus began with landfilling procedures. The first academic building to be constructed was a temporary administrative block which came to be known as Transit Complex which began serving immediately as the center of academic as well as administrative activities. Thereafter construction on various other projects such as student hostels, faculty residence and administrative center began.

IITG admitted its first batch of students into its Bachelor of Technology programme in 1995. The selection process was similar to the one used by other IITs viz through the JEE. Students were admitted into three branches of engineering viz. Computer Science, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering. The students resided in temporary hostels in Bhangagarh and classes began being held at a building in Panbazar. In 1998, the first batch of students were accepted into the Master of Technology program through the GATE.

The beautiful campus of IITG is situated on the northern banks of Brahmaputra. The campus abuts the North Guwahati town of Amingaon and attracts many visitors for its picturesque milieu and . The young IIT continues to develop and diversify each year, while maintaining its stated aim of improving standards in education and research. The institute boasts of providing the best and the latest facilities in all regards in the entire country..

Academics

Currently IIT Guwahati houses the following departments :

IIT Guwahati has rapidly assembled the necessary infrastructure for carrying out advanced scientific and engineering research and is equipped with state of the art instruments and aids. IIT Guwahati has the distinction among the IIT fraternity, of having accomplished this without assistance or collaboration from any foreign government. IITG is also currently home to six Centres of Research.

The Department of Design (DoD) at the institute awards the degree of B.Des. (Bachelor of Design) on completion of the undergraduate academic program. It is currently the only design school in the country that offers a four year undergraduate degree program in Design. The departments of the Institute offer B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes.

Presently there are about 1,800 students on rolls, 152 faculty members and 250 support staff.

Student Life and Hostels

IIT Guwahati Hostels

IIT Guwahati is a fully residential campus. All the students live in hostels located in the campus. All these hostels have spacious single seater rooms and have all basic amenities like food mess, canteen, lounges, campus wide LAN with internet access etc. The hostels are named after various rivers and tributries of north-east India. Presently, the hostels are:

  • Kameng
  • Barak
  • Subansiri

Many other hostels in the plan are rapidly coming up as a part of the campus construction.

Annual Festivals

Every year (lon with his friends), two major national level festivals are organised by the students of IIT Guwahati. The science and technological festival, Techniche, is held in the odd semester (beginning of September) while the cultural festival, Alcheringa, is held in the even semester (end of January). Alcheringa is the biggest cultural festival of its kind in the entire north-east India and draws crowds from all over India.

Apart from the two national level festivals, the students have an intra-IIT, inter-hostel cultural festival named Manthan (literally:churning), held every year in October. The annual sports meet Spirit is also organised each year and many colleges from the north-east India participate in this meet. Besides these, Inter-IIT Sports Meet is held annually every winter among the seven Indian Institutes of Technology. The Meet is hosted by any one of the IITs in turn. In the year 2006, IIT Guwahati has hosted the 42nd Inter-IIT Sports Meet for the first time in its history.
