The All-NBA Team is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) honor bestowed on the best players in the league following every NBA season. The voting is conducted by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada.[1] The team has been selected in every season of the league's existence, dating back to its inaugural season in 1946.[2] The All-NBA Team is composed of three five-man lineups, a first, second, and third team, comprising a total of 15 roster spots. The All-NBA Team originally had two teams, but was extended to three teams in 1988.

Players receive five points for a first team vote, three points for a second team vote, and one point for a third team vote. The top five players with the highest point total make the first team with the next five making the second team and so forth. In the case of a tie at the fifth position of each team, the roster is extended. If the first team consists of six players due to a tie, the second team will still consist of five players with the potential for more extension in the event of additional ties. Ties have occurred only once in 1952, when Bob Davies and Dolph Schayes tied in votes received.[1] From 1946 to 1955, players were selected without regard to position, however, each team consists of two forwards, one center, and two guards beginning from 1956.[2]

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the record for the most total selections with fifteen.[3] Karl Malone follows with fourteen total honors, and Shaquille O'Neal is third with thirteen honors.[3] Dolph Schayes, Bob Cousy, Jerry West, and Hakeem Olajuwon are tied for fourth with twelve selections.[3] Malone has the most All-NBA first team honors with eleven, while Cousy, Bob Pettit, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan are all tied for second most with ten.[3]

Notes

  • a The Most Valuable Player award was first established in 1956.
  • b Before the 1971–72 season, Lew Alcindor converted to Islam and changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, which means "noble, powerful servant" in Arabic.[4]
  • c Hakeem Olajuwon was born in Nigeria, but became a naturalized United States citizen in 1993. When he arrived in the United States, the University of Houston incorrectly spelled his first name "Akeem". Olajuwon used that spelling until March 9, 1991, when he announced that he would add an H. According to Olajuwon, "Hakeem" means "wise man" in Arabic, while "Akeem" has no meaning.[5][6]
  • d Patrick Ewing was born in Jamaica, but had become a naturalized United States citizen while at Georgetown.[7] He represented the United States at the 1984 Summer Olympics.[8]
  • e Because Tim Duncan is a United States citizen by birth, as are all natives of the U.S. Virgin Islands,[9] he was able to play for the U.S. internationally.[10]
