Tommi-puukko is maybe the most famous traditional knife from Finland called Puukko. These knives were designed to be used as a weapon but also as a tool. A Tommi Puukko model with a 20 cm long blade blade was used by the finnish army during the winter war against the soviet union. Later it has been used more as a tool and the most common model of Tommi Puukko have a 9,5 cm long blade. The total length of this knife is about 20 cm. Blade is hand forged of silver steel. Handle is made of arctic raita root (or actic dwarf birch). Bolsters are solid casted brass. Swinger sheath is made of leather and tinted with black and red colors. Sheath is made separately to each knife and it fits so tightly that you can hear a click sound when the knife is pulled into the sheath.

Original Tommi Puukko´s design was made by knife smith Kalle Keränen who lived in Hyrynsalmi in northern Finland. He studied knife making in Fiskars 1867-1868. His teacher was english smith Thomas Woodward. Thomas was pronounced "Tommi" by the local people and this is the way that this knife got it´s name Tommi Puukko. Puukko is finnish and means knife. The other name for this knife is Kainuun Puukko according to the name of the province in northern Finland where Kalle Keränen lived and worked. The company that Kalle grounded was also called Kainuun Puukko.

These knives became very popular in Finland because they are razor sharp, have long edge retention, and are easy to resharpen. They are comfortable, light weight and durable.

Tommi Puukko can be seen in the collection of the National Museum of Finland in Helsinki and it´s listed as one of finnish traditional hand crafted art items by the finnish National Board of Antiquities.

This knife was given as a present to other leaders of the world by the finnish president Urho Kekkonen in 1960´s and 70´s. It was a most common gift that this president gave on his state visits. Urho was often photographed in wilderness hunts with his own Tommi Puukko hanging on his belt.

Other smiths who have produced Tommi Puukkos have been Setti Keränen, Antti Kemppainen, Olavi Kemppainen and Alpo Kemppainen. According to a study by Reijo Heikkinen for the University of Kajaani these families has had knife smiths in Finland dating back to 1610[[1]]. All parts of these knives are hand made by the same smith.
