Making Fiends is an American animated television series, created by Amy Winfrey. It is an adaptation of an online series of the same name, and began airing on Nicktoons Network on October 4, 2008. No new episodes have aired since November 1, 2008.

Plot

Vendetta is a selfish little girl with the power to make fiends, "hideous things" which she has unleashed on her town to bring it under her reign of terror. The coastal town of Clamburg, once a thriving tourist destination, has become a grim, forbidding place, with stores shuttered and the populace cowed before the horror of Vendetta's watchful fiends.

Charlotte, a new girl at Vendetta's school, arrives determined to make a friend. An "impossibly cheery"[1] optimist, Charlotte rapidly becomes the foil[2] and tormentor of the morose and vindictive Vendetta, by insisting on befriending her.

Vendetta is unable to elicit anything but saccharine friendliness out of Charlotte, and so makes the first of many fiends that are specially designed to "destroy" the newcomer. After demonstrating that her oblivious joy makes her immune to the dangers and terrors of all of the fiends, Charlotte declares that she and Vendetta are "going to be best friends forever and ever," a concept that leaves Vendetta speechless with dread as the opening segment ends.

In subsequent scenes, Charlotte displays an ability to change the nature of some fiends into helpful friends, further frustrating Vendetta's efforts to undo her. Being "oblivious to all that is bad and mean in the world",[3] Charlotte neither acknowledges the damage caused by Vendetta's fiends, nor the threat Vendetta herself poses over Clamburg. Nearly all of the residents, including Vendetta's parents, come to hate or fear Charlotte more than they do Vendetta within the first six episodes.

Charlotte never discovers or understands that Vendetta despises her, and Vendetta is never able to get rid of Charlotte. While this conflict is never resolved by the end of each episode, some minor developments appear to continue between episodes, like the introduction of Buttons 2 and an enormous statue that Vendetta has raised of herself.

Production

Making Fiends started on July 14, 2003, as an independent online cartoon made by Winfrey using Macromedia Flash. Winfrey had previously created two other online series, Big Bunny and Muffin Films.

In early 2004, Nick started negotiations with Winfrey to develop the series into a half-hour television program. During the long negotiation and development period, Winfrey continued to create new web episodes independently, and sell related merchandise in her own online "souvenir shop". In 2006, Nickelodeon began distributing many of the web cartoons as streaming video on their own TurboNick platform, and later as podcasts available on iTunes.

Making Fiends was picked up for a first season of television episodes in late 2006. Production began in January 2007 and the show started airing in 2008. The show was set to premiere on Nickelodeon, but Nickelodeon decided to cancel its plans for a broadcast on their parent channel, and instead gave this new series to its sister channel Nicktoons Network.

The series premiered on October 4, 2008. The show currently airs on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30am ET/8:30am PT and 9:30pm ET/6:30pm PT. It has received generally favorable reviews by critics. Making Fiends carries a rating of TV-Y7 (TV-PG on The-N.com).[4]

Official Making Fiends merchandise is coming out in the next few weeks.[5]

A second season is now filming and will air sometime in 2009.

Characters

  • Vendetta: An evil green girl with the power to make fiends, both through stereotypical mad-scientist means and in the kitchen. She spends her time torturing the other children and using her giant bear-like hamster to get what she wants. In fact, she runs the school completely because all the adults are afraid of her. She constantly tries to "destroy" Charlotte, but her schemes are always foiled by Charlotte's kind obliviousness. She has declared to hate singing, and favors eating clams, grape punch and beef jerky (she also attempts to eat an onion-on-a-stick on pultiple occasions, but she always accidentally drops it on the ground).[3] Vendetta is Italian for "blood feud", and true to her name, Vendetta is vindictive and cruel. She speaks with a Bulgarian accent.
  • Charlotte: A highly optimistic blue little girl from Vermont. (Voice by Amy Winfry) She moved to Clamburg with her grandmother Charlene. Charlotte thinks she and Vendetta are best friends, though Vendetta wants to destroy her. She is optimistic and could be described as too friendly; it is difficult for her to get angry as she sees everything as lovable. When Vendetta unleashes fiends onto her, Charlotte always ruins her plans by making the fiends do useful things. Charlotte is very naive and thinks Vendetta is her best friend. She likes to pretend to be different kind of things such as postage stamps or cheese. She likes to sing songs about such things as being small, No. 2 pencils, Vendetta and everthing else. According to her grandmother Charlene, Charlotte's parents are astronauts. Charlotte has a pet hamster named Buttons and a scissors fiend named Buttons 2. Charlotte loves everything in the world (except strawberries and [[moose]).
  • Grudge: Vendetta's giant hamster fiend, who fills the role of Vendetta's sidekick and thug enforcer. Grudge grunts and growls to express himself. In the TV series, it is expanded more on his feelings for Vendetta, showing that he really does care about her and her safety.
  • Mr. Milk: The teacher who has the misfortune of teaching Charlotte and Vendetta's class, Mr. Milk is incredibly timid and never gets around to teaching due to his fear of Vendetta's reactions to his lessons. He speaks in a nervous, disjointed monotone and is afraid of the fanged red bird fiend that is constantly glaring at him. He fantasizes about being a Swiss banker and having a relationship with Ms. Minty.
  • Grandma Charlene: Charlotte's grandmother, whose personality is essentially that of an older Charlotte. She runs a store that sells candy and auto parts; supposedly, she can make almost anything out of lemon drops and brake cables. She has a gigantic bookcase full of cookbooks in her kitchen, but she does not seem to use them very often.
  • Giant Kitty: Also called "Big Red Kitty" or "Hellcat". Vendetta's first fiend; Charlotte spends a lot of time with it, much to Vendetta's dismay. It despises taking baths.
  • Buttons: Charlotte's pet hamster, her "favorite hamster in the whole world". He is also very scared of Vendetta and her fiends. According to Charlotte, Buttons likes peanuts and buttons. His prominent feature is the high-pitched squeal he makes when he is scared. It is shown that he may be more frightened by Charlotte than Vendetta.
  • Scissors Fiend: A fiend Vendetta made to attack Charlotte that looks like a bird and can cut things with its scissor-like beak. Charlotte believes it to be a puppy, and made it into a good friend and pet, renaming it Buttons 2. It now enjoys cutting up construction paper.
  • Marion: A light blue, overweight schoolgirl who sits next to Charlotte and talks quietly. She has been planning an escape from Clamburg to Canada for years, and tries to in one episode before being stopped by one of Vendetta's fiends; because of this, she has formed a fascination with mining. She flees at any sign of danger. She despises Vendetta for the most part, going as far as hanging pictures of Vendetta on her wall and crossing her out.
  • Marvin: A dark green schoolboy who frequently has his property or person vandalized by Vendetta's fiends. It is a running gag for Marvin to declare his loss or damage as a simple possessive exclamation, such as "My banana!", "My ice cream!" or "My spine!"
  • Malachi: A dark purple schoolboy. He speaks in Elizabethan English phrases and refuses to sing or use electronics because he believes it is blasphemous.
  • Maggie: A very dark blue-green schoolgirl who has lost all of her hope. She is convinced that nothing she can do will change anything. She spends her free time staring at the sea and writing bad poetry so bleak, it can even temporarily depress Charlotte. Maggie has no interests or hobbies, and all her school projects are about the bleak and the doomed, like Pompeii or extinct animals. She hates Charlotte and thinks she is stupid.
  • Mort: A blue-gray schoolboy that is "friendly to the extreme". Mort is always ready to offer advice and opinions, none of which ever make sense. He has an irrational fear of soda, but a mysterious and tragic love of soda cans.
  • Violeta and Viktor: Vendetta's parents have been shrunk down and live in a hamster cage. Vendetta feeds them croutons and beans. They do not like Charlotte. It is possible if Vendetta used her parents to test the shrinking slug from "Shrinking Charlotte".
  • Ms. Minty: First seen in the online series, appearing as the substitute teacher; she has a brief appearance in the TV series. She is unaware of Vendetta's fiends, and that Mr. Milk has a crush on her. She also briefly mentions being a member of a book club.
  • Mrs. Millet: The lunch lady. A red frog fiend watches over her to make sure that she always serves nothing but grape punch, clams, and beef jerky. She openly disobeyed her fiend for two days before finally caving in.
  • Mr. Gumpit: A purple nervous man that owns the Giant Pet Supplies store.
  • Onion Man: Owns the onion stand in Clamburg. He is seen to be the father, or a relative, to Maggie, as he sat with her at the parent-teacher night.

Universe

Fiends

Vendetta makes the fiends through a process similar to baking, mixing together ingredients to form them. Vendetta seems to be the only one in Clamburg who knows how to make fiends, although in one episode Charlotte was able to make a friendly fiend without help from Vendetta. (Vendetta only gave her the ingredients.)

Vendetta gets her fiend recipes from a large green cookbook. The base ingredient is a colorless powder, or liquid, called fiend mix. Though Vendetta has been shown in episodes such as "Puppies, Puppies, Puppies!" to be able to make simple fiends from only fiend mix, more complicated ingredients are needed to make fiends with more potential. Another interesting point is that adding any ingredient that doesn't fit can make the fiend come out entirely wrong, as shown in the promo clip "Ralph" and in the segment "Parentnapped".

There are many fiends that take prominent roles in the show (see Characters), but many fiends are only shown in one or two episodes before disappearing forever. Many fiends were taken from the online series, such as in the episode "Marvin the Middle Manager"; the "library fiends" were previously "noise-making fiends" shown in web episode 16.

Charlotte can manipulate fiends very easily. It has been shown in many episodes that giving fiends sugar of any kind, or sometimes even just showing them affection, can make them turn benevolent. It is unknown whether this is a flaw present in all fiends, a mistake Vendetta repeats by accident, or some unspoken power of Charlotte's.

Most fiends Vendetta creates only have one purpose, and seem only capable of doing one thing. It is unknown if it is just because a lack of intelligence, if Vendetta only surrounds them with one thing to do, or if it is in the ingredients. Grudge, however, is a more complicated fiend who does anything Vendetta asks.

Notable fiends

Fiends are shown in order of creation.

  • Tentacle fiend ("Charlotte's First Day"): The first fiend Vendetta made to destroy Charlotte. This was a monkey in the web series.
  • Mr. Huggles ("Super Evil"): A friendly fiend created by Charlotte that loves to hug everyone and everything, including inaminate objects. He is one of the few talking fiends, only saying "I love you!" when hugging someone or something.
  • Vegetable fiends (Vegetables): Fiends that look like vegetables that screech loudly; carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, etc. Charlotte taught them all to sing.
  • Toupee fiend ("Toupee"): A fiend Vendetta made for Mr. Milk by Vendetta. It offered to make all of his dreams come true, but only if he destroyed Charlotte. When Charlotte was at the edge of a cliff trying to catch a butterfly, Mr. Milk (with the toupee) was nearby. Mr. Milk then threw the toupee over the edge of the cliff, where it became owned by a squid. Nothing happened after that with the toupee.
  • Pigeon fiends ("Mama Vendetta"): Fiends created by Vendetta to protect her statue and keep Charlotte away from it. These are the first fiends shown to actually hatch out of eggs and to not be created with a violent nature. Vendetta calls these fiends pigeon fiends, but they actually look like chickens. These fiends seem to be drawn to the first person they see after hatching from the green eggs. Their destructive ability is that they are really bombs with a fuse automatically lit on their heads. If they receive a major impact, they will explode as demonstrated by Vendetta. This would explain why they do not have a violent nature; to draw people close to them because of their cuteness then explode. It is still unknown for sure if Vendetta purposely created them this way or not. It appears that a while after hatching, they gain the ability to fly, as shown when Vendetta threw them of a cliff, and they flew back up to Vendetta.
  • Shrinking slug fiend ("Shrinking Charlotte"): A purple, slug fiend created by Vendetta to destroy Charlotte. It possesses the ability to shrink any thing that touches it with some kind of electricity-like energy. It apparently can not control when to shrink something that touches it or not, for when Vendetta touched it, she shrunk and the slug seemed to be unaware of her touching it. The original plan was for Charlotte to try to pet the fiend, thinking it's some kind of cute animal, which will intern, shrink Charlotte. Then the fiend was supposed to eat her. The plan would have most likely worked if the fiend wasn't so slow-moving.
  • Gianting squid fiends ("Shrinking Charlotte"): Small, black, one-eyed fiends created by Vendetta to undo the shrinking effects of another fiend, the slug fiend. These fiends are kept in a jar full of water and are carried around. Its power works the same way as the slug fiend's does, only it makes things grow.
  • Parent fiends ("Parents"): Two blue fiends Vendetta created to destroy Charlotte, who thinks they are her parents on a visit from outer space. Instead of destroying Charlotte, they played with her because they were sad for her. The fiends were soon eaten by a whale (since they were carrying ham) and Charlotte thinks they went back to outer space.
  • Hammer fiend ("No Singing"): A fiend created by Vendetta to smash anyone who sings with a hammer, especially Charlotte. This fiend is one of the few talking fiends; however, it has only said "No Singing" then subsequently tries to smash whoever was singing. Because of Maggie's depressing poetry she read aloud for show-and-tell, Charlotte became sad and didn't feel like singing. When Vendetta tries to get Charlotte to sing, she starts to sing herself, which triggered the fiend to go after her.
  • Guard dog fiend ("Puppies! Puppies! Puppies!"): A black dog fiend created by Vendetta off-screen, to apparently protect her house. At first they protected Vendetta's home, but Vendetta decided to use it to destroy Charlotte. Vendetta's fiend Multiplier Machine was first seen being used on the guard dog fiends, to make more of them. Charlotte, however, made them into her friends by giving them lollipops which made the guard dogs like her. She uses Vendetta's Multiplier Machine to make more of themselves and soon there were Charlottes and guard dogs everywhere. Vendetta solves this problem by creating another fiend that just ate the Charlottes and guard dogs. However, one Charlotte escaped the eating fiend.
  • Rick ("Marvin the Middle Manager"): The "fiend by the slide". Not of much significance, but is seen giving Marvin hot cocoa before Charlotte reads the last thing on the to-do list.
  • Library fiends ("Marvin the Middle Manager"): Fiends in the school library that eat books and paper.
  • Burglar fiend ("Parentnapped"): Fiend created off-screen by Vendetta, which was sent to take Vendetta's parents back to her house (Violeta and Viktor were at Charlotte's house). However, the fiend captured Charlene (Charlotte's grandmother) instead. Another fiend, the memo fiend, comes into play by writing to Charlotte about trading parents.
  • Smash ("Smash"): A fiend created by Vendetta to destroy Charlotte. It is large and purple and wields two cymbals. It was to join Charlotte's band and pretend it was playing along, and smash her at the right time by slamming its cymbals into each other with Charlotte in between them. The fiend accidentally smashed Vendetta, Charlotte, and Grudge together into one being. The three were separated by electrocution.
  • Claw fiend ("New Best Friend"): A fiend made by Marion to destroy Charlotte, because she was very angry with her at the time. The fiend then ate Marion's digging tools after Vendetta moved out of Marion's house, when Marion was reattempting an escape to Canada.
  • Tornado fiend ("Tornado"): A fiend made by Vendetta to take Charlotte far away from Clamburg. It did not work, for Charlotte's house ended up right in Vendetta's and Grudge was launched approximately 24,527 miles away.
  • John ("Pony"): A pink pony fiend that Vendetta made to Charlotte, because she really wanted a pony. Vendetta made it to destroy Charlotte. While Charlotte did not get injured, the pony attcked Clamburg. Vendetta said it was a girl, but Charlotte named it John anyway.

Clamburg

Clamburg is the mysterious and gloomy town the show is set in. Vendetta closed stores she does not like, such as a toy store. Nearby cities are called Tinspit (which is mentioned by Vendetta to have Miniature golf) and Molding. They eat clams, beef jerky, grape punch, and lots of onions, including onion soda. The town is coastal and was in the past famous for its clams. Before Vendetta came with her fiends, Clamburg was truly a happy place, as shown in a commercial. It had beaches, happy inhabitants, a thriving clam industry, and a polka music festival.

  • Mu Elementary School: A school in Clamburg. Mr. Milk, Ms. Minty and Mrs. Millet are known staff. Like the rest of Clamburg, the school is full of Vendetta's fiends. It is possible that Mu isn't its full name, as the sign appears to have been bitten one or two times by a fiend. It is possible its original name was "Muffin Elementary School", which is a possible reference to Muffin Films.
  • Le Mayonnaise: A fancy restaurant located in downtown Clamburg. Vendetta and Grudge are seen to eat there quite often.
  • Giant Pet Supplies: A pet supply store for giant pets in downtown Clamburg. The owner is Mr. Gumpit.
  • Onion Stand: An onion stand that Vendetta and Grudge visit often that is owned by the Onion Man.
