"Beautiful" is the third single from Akon's third studio album Freedom. The single was released in the UK with Akon a on the track alongside American Pop singer, Colby O'Donis. However an extended album version of the song features a rap verse from Canadian rapper, Kardinal Offishall. It was released to U.S. Top 40 radio on January 6, 2009. It has been released as A-side to "I'm So Paid" in the UK. The song describes Akon seeing a female that he is attracted to, and wanting to go over and meet her. He repeatedly describes her in the song as being beautiful.

Music video

Akon posted a video on YouTube stating that he is shooting a video for the song and that he "wants the best music video" for the song. An official video was made in early January, with an MTV contest sending a winner to be in the video. Colby O'Donis, Kardinal Offishall, Tyrese, and A. R. Rahman all make appearances. The video was premiered on Yahoo! Music on February 24.[1] On the same day it was added to iTunes for download.

Cover Versions

"There have been many covers of this song done by various artistes, most notably by Sri Lankan RnB/Pop band "Gravity".[2] [3]. , who performed the song in 2009 at Sri Lanka's Premier music competition "TNL Onstage" and it was aired on TNL Radio, in what was the most aired track during the months that followed.

Latin versions

Akon recorded a Latin American version of the clip, featuring the ex-RBD singer Dulce María. Some parts of the song were sung in Spanish.

Also, another version of the song was recorded featuring Brazilian hip hop singer Negra Li singing some parts of the song in Portuguese.


Chart performance

"Beautiful" managed to become a top twenty hit in 2008 the previous year before its official release. Due to high digital sales, the song debuted at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 on the week of December 10, 2008, the week following the release of Freedom. It is Akon's eighth top twenty hit as a lead artist, and his seventeenth top twenty overall. It debuted at #7 on the Hot Digital Songs chart, selling over 91,000 downloads that week. It also made a #25 debut on the Pop 100 chart the same week. On the Canadian Hot 100 chart, it debuted at #16. The single also reached #30 on the UK Singles Chart on March 1, 2009, and has so far peaked at #8 and #3 on the UK R&B Chart. Even though the song has received very little airplay in Australia it has charted on the ARIA singles chart peaking at #14 and on the ARIA Urban Charts, it has reached #7. On the New Zealand Top 40, it debuted at #39, then peaked at #13.
