Shriya Saran (born September 11, 1982) is an Indian film actress. She began her career acting in music videos, while also attending an acting studio to follow her dream to act. After her debut in 2001 with Ishtam, she gained Telugu cinema's attention in 2002 by playing the role of Bhanu in Santhosham, her first major hit. Following the film she appeared in several Telugu films with prominent actors, whilst, also making in-roads in Bollywood as well as the Tamil film industry. In 2007, Saran became a national figure after her performance alongside Rajinikanth in Sivaji: The Boss, after which she has signed several Bollywood, Kollywood and also a Hollywood film.

Saran performs predominantly in leading heroine roles in high-budget and major studio films, ranging from romantic comedies and drama to science fiction and action thrillers. Her blockbuster released films include Santhosham (2002), Tagore (2003), Sivaji: The Boss (2007) is the highest grosser in the indian film history and Kanthaswamy (2009). Her other major box office film include Nuvve Nuvve (2002), Nenunnanu (2003) and Chatrapathi (2005) in telugu, Thiruvilayadal Arambam (2006), Azhagiya Tamil Magan (2007) and Kutty (2010) in tamil, and Awaarapan (2007) which gave her Filmfare nomination for best debut actress and Mission Istaanbul (2008) in hindi.

Early life

Shriya Saran was born in Dehradun to Pushpendra Saran and Neeraja Saran. She was brought up in Ranipur, a few miles from Haridwar. Her father Pushpendra Saran works at Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. and her mother is a school teacher, teaching chemistry. Saran is their second child and has an elder brother Abhiroop. Saran completed her schooling from Delhi Public School, Haridwar. She did her college from Lady Shri Ram College and received a B.A.[1][2][3].

Career

Early career

Saran's first opportunity to appear in front of the camera came whilst she studied her second year at the LSR College in Delhi, which she quit to participate for the shoot. Saran's first screen appearance was in the music video of Tirakthi Kyon Hawa by Reenu Nathan, which she was given a chance to perform in by her dance teacher who had recommended her. The video—shot at Banaras—gave her fame, prompting Ramoji Films to offer her the lead role of Neha in their film Ishtam starring and directed by newcomers. Before the release of Ishtam, Saran signed three mega-budget films; Santosham, Nuvve Nuvve and Tagore with actors Nagarjuna, Tarun and Chiranjeevi respectively.

Film career

Telugu

Saran started her movie acting career with the Telugu film Ishtam (2001), produced by Usha Kiran Movies. This first film didn't fare too well at the box office, but she was noticed by many Telugu producers and directors. Soon she signed for Nagarjuna's Santosham (2002), which was a major hit. After the success of Tagore she became one of the top actresses of the south Indian film industry and has made her most wanted actress in telugu cinema. Her later movies, such as Nuvve Nuvve with Tarun is a blockbuster thus earned her many accolades for her performance. Besides that, her film Ela Cheppanu also earned many accolades but the film was a flop in box office. Later she acted in the film Nenunnanu opposite Akkineni Nagarjuna which was a blockbuster and critically acclaimed which is very rare in telugu cinema because it was a heroine based film. Her films Arjun with Mahesh Babu and Naa Alludu with Jr. NTR were average grossers. While her film Balu ABCDEFG opposite Power Star Pawan Kalyan was an average grosser at India but this was the first telugu movie to be released in South Africa after 40 years and received overwhelming response there.After her four films were failure at box office she then made her comeback with one of the biggest hits in her career Chatrapati opposite Prabhas which was a comeback for Prabhas too. She then appeared with Ravi Teja in Bhageeratha which is her last telugu film as heroine till the date. She than acted in many telugu films as an item number and cameo appearance such as Boss opposite Akkineni Nagarjuna, Game oppposite Vishnu, Devadasu opposite Ram, Munna opposite Prabhas and her last film Tulasi opposite Venkatesh. She also make her cameo appearance in National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu Bommalata. Saran will make her comeback in telugu with big budget film Komaram Puli with actor Pawan Kalyan[4][5][6]. This film will be directed by S. J. Suryaah and Saran will perform for a song which will tune by Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman[7]. Saran will also make her comeback as a heroine in telugu cinema industry after five years gap[8][9][10] in the film Don Seenu opposite Ravi Teja[11][12]. She starred her last film as heroine in Bhageeratha which also starred by Ravi Teja.

Tamil

She made her Tamil movie debut in Enakku 20 Unakku 18 (2003)[13], along with Telugu actor Tarun and Trisha Krishnan[14]. The film was an average hit at the box-office, but it was a musical hit due to music composed by A. R. Rahman. She has made her comeback in Kollywood through the film Mazhai with Jayam Ravi. The movie did well at the box-office. She then act with Dhanush in the film Thiruvilayadal Arambam which her first hit film in tamil. She beat other top actresses for the much coveted role opposite Rajinikanth in Shankar's Sivaji: The Boss which is the most expensive Indian film to date after Dasavathaaram. She then appeared opposite Vijay in Azhagiya Tamil Magan which turned to be a flop. She then make a special appearance with Vadivelu in the film Indiralohathil Na Azhagappan which her only tamil film in 2008. After after one year gap in tamil film, she then make her comeback in the film Thoranai opposite Vishal. Unfortunately the film is a average grosser at box office. She than bagged the role of Subbulakshmi opposite Vikram in much hyped movie Kanthaswamy which is a blockbuster[15][16][17]. Later, she appeared in the Tamil film Kutty which is a remake of telugu blockbuster film Arya with Dhanush and the film declared hit at box office[18]. She then acted in the film Jaggubhai which directed by famous director K.S. Ravikumar. She played as Sarath Kumar's daughter and a spoilt brat, her role in this film gained many accolades although the film did not fare well ai box office. Saran will be see with Arya's next venture Chikku Bukku where she is playing the lady love to the hero while prominent bollywood actress Amrita Rao's sister Preeta Rao[19][20] act as second heroine in the film. She has recently signed up for the film Rowthiram opposite Jeeva which will produce by R. B. Choudary, but the film is being shelved for sometimes[21][22] but now Jeeva is already finish his shooting for his previous film so the film shooting is continued[23]. Shriya is also filming with Kamal Hassan in the film Marmayogi[24][25], whilst actress Trisha Krishnan and Hema Malini[26] are also doing supporting roles in the film. Marmayogi has been shelved for sometimes due to financial problem facing by the film's producers[27][28].

Malayalam

Saran has appeared for the first time in a Malayalam movie with Pokkiri Raja in which she appears opposite megastar Mammootty and Prithviraj[29][30][31]: besides that, prominent south Indian Sneha is also playing a major character in the film[32]. The film has released on 30th April 2010[33][34].

Hindi

Shriya's first hindi film is Tujhe Meri Kasam. Shriya acted along with Genelia D'Souza and Ritesh Deshmukh. It was an average grosser at the box office and Saran did not gain anything because her role was very small when compared to Genelia's role. She then acted in the film Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum with Arya Babbar. The movie was also a failure at the box office. Later she acted in movie Shukriya: Till Death Do Us Apart[35][36] alongside Aftab Shivdasani which was a box office success but she did not gain any attention. Saran then made her comeback in Awaarapan alongside Emraan Hashmi which was a first joint production movie between India and Pakistan. The movie was successful at the box office. In 2008, she acted in Mission Istanbul with Zayed Khan and Vivek Oberoi while Abhishek Bachchan made his special appearance in this film. The film was a semi-hit at the box office. Saran then acted in the Hindi remake of the Telugu film Athadu Ek - The Power of One with Bobby Deol, but eventually unlike Athadu this film was just an average grosser. She then moved to tamil cinema and has not acted in any hindi film. But according many sources that she is currently filming with Akshay Kumar in the film Komagata Maru that will be direct by famous director Deepa Mehta [37][38]. The film will undergo a long production as the film will release in 2014 as the 100th anniversary of Komagata Maru incident[39][40][41][42][43] .

Other work and events

Saran was a part of Tamil director Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai, an event which seeks to raise funds for The Banyan, a voluntary organisation which rehabilitates homeless women with mental illness in Chennai.[44]. She also walked the ramp alongside Neetu Chandra for fashion designer Neeta Lulla at the Chennai International Fashion Week on 20 December 2009[45][46] famous Tamil actress Tamanna also attended to watch the show. She is now the brand ambassador of the famous 'celebrity soap' Lux[47][48][49][50] and the famous anti-dandruff shampoo Head & Shoulders[51]. Saran recently signed as brand ambassador for a new reality dance show 'Dhee-4'[52] along with popular south indian actress Rambha[53]. Saran also signed as brand ambassador for Brooke Bond Taj Mahal Tea a tea brand from Hindustan Unilever Limited[54]. She will promote the brand the brand with Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan[55].
