I need your help

Hey, I really need your help keeping an image on wikipedia. I have images that User:Meleese keeps trying to delete for no apparent reason. If you have time, please check File:TodayShow.jpg and let me know what I need to do to keep this editor off my back. It would mean a lot to me if you could help me out here. Thanks so much! --Screwball23 talk 23:14, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The footer code had the wrong date to the previous issue, 26 instead of 25. The link will only appear if the target page exists, and it was looking in the wrong place.--ragesoss (talk) 17:44, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sources

{{help me}} I would like to create a page about a company, but the only reference or source I have is the company website "About Us" page. Everything in my article will be derived from that page. I cannot locate any news sources, or other credible sources for this company. Will this be accepted, or will my article be deleted? Nksk1 (talk) 22:36, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I nulled the template because it seems to be asking a specific user. However, the answer is likely that the company is not notable enough. W:CORP says that a company is notable if it is covered in reliable, third-party sources.  fetchcomms 22:38, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox/Trial page

Hi Draeco, In regards to not having outside sources, is there anyway I can create a trial page, or sandbox, where I can try to put in this information and see if it will be accepted? I created a few pages on different user accounts and they were deleted and marked as "self-promotion". I am not promoting this company, I simply want to write an article about it but lack the proper outside sources. All of the information that I will be writing about can be found on their company "About Us" section, however.

Also, is there any way to delete those past accounts or articles created on those accounts? Thank you for your help, as I'm new to Wikipedia!Nksk1 (talk) 17:57, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Draeco. Thanks for your offer of adoption. I have read your information, and I feel you would be a good adoptive parent for me. :D So how do we proceed? Is this a formal or an informal relationship? I do have one or two questions at present.

How to deal with reliable sources warning

Ok, thanks. I published this other article on Richard Egan (composer) and then received a warning about reliable sources. I put some in (though not as many or with the complete care that I did the Trebor Jay Tichenor article), but the warning still persists since the middle of 2008. I would like correct the article so that the warning is removed. Do you have any suggestions? And, is this the way we correspond? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jandris (talkcontribs) 17:31, 4 February 2010 (UTC) Ok, then, I checked out the Egan page to see what you were talking about. I think I am not in need of any more advice at this time, but I will listen to any you have to offer. Since at this time my main interest in which I also actually have a bit of expertise is ragtime, I will concentrate on a couple of articles that I think need to be written. If I need more information, I will send you a request. Thanks for adopting me. Jandris (talk) 00:55, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Great! Good luck with it. CPOV I would put in N&N, because it's an upcoming event that Wikimedians are likely to be interested in rather than outside news coverage reacting to Wikimedia projects. But if you're ever in doubt, just add it and we can shuffle things around as needed.--ragesoss (talk) 13:12, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good enough?

I created this article and it seems that it is too short. Therefore I tried to expand it. Does it have an enough length so that the deletion template can be removed? Thanks Kangxi Emperor 康熙帝 (talk) 13:20, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As of the History etc. It is quite hard to be written as the source itself remains unclear, it is also lacking of references as sources that know exactly about the existence of this title may have been too old to use internet, or is not concerned to write it in a book or any other media. Indonesia has a rather poor History documentation regarding titles. Kangxi Emperor 康熙帝 (talk) 16:44, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II, I actually have planned to create a version by translating the Indonesian Wikipedia. However I still have difficulties in deciding which part has to go or not, as of recreating it from the articles on the internet, it seems that Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin is not a subject which people sees as important to be read. I will try to do it in the near future. Thanks for the advice. Kangxi Emperor 康熙帝 (talk) 16:44, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Mentor

Draeco, Thanks for taking the time to answer my request for assistance. I'm new to Wikipedia and I'm not sure how to proceed in getting my paper published. While I'm not new to internet web page publishing, I find there is a learning curve from html coding to what Wikipedia has established as their own. I'm in the process of transcribing a book by my mother-in-law, Margaret Davis Teague, to a page I created of the same name. I'm not sure if her work in radiation biology is of any importance to anyone, but I hope that there is one researcher who might find that one answer in her work that could benefit all of us. Any assistance you can offer to have Dr. Teague's page published would be deeply appreciated. Thanking you in advance regarding this matter, I am Sincerely yours, Rod Viator (talk) 19:39, 14 February 2010 (UTC) Rod Viator[reply]

Draeco,

I know you have been of great assistance on the Idiopathic Pulmonary Haemosiderosis page, and I would like your assistance once more, either by assisting me with adding to the page, and leading me to resources that will allow me to add what I find on this disease. I have found an important article by researchers finding a DNA marker in IPH and using a new treatment to possibly ward off other complications (pulmonary fibrosis). Please let me know if you can assist me. Here is the link:

emily austin Perry

Hey Draeco:

I finally got enough into the article that I felt like making a go of publishing it. It has some obvious presentation flaws which reflect my lack of wiki programming ability. Can you help 1) make it look more like a wiki article? I don't know how to 2) add a table for her kids names / dates of their life/death, and also 3) a table for her names (Emily has at least 10 names that refer to her in historical context). 4) I'd like anyone who searches ANY of the names to reach this page.

Thanks so much.

Also, to cross bridge when come to it, I will add a picture when I find it; there is one at a museum I am seeking a copy.

Thanks,

Draeco:

Thank you for cleaning up the Emily Austin Perry article. I see you are from the UK... So was Richard Austin, the original Austin in the United States in 1638...

I will continue to add information to the article and expand to create articles about overlapping subject matter to build the total contribution as related to this era in early Texas history. So much of the materials are still not public or accessible; a lot of the history is credited to Stephen F. Austin since he's so famous, but the rigour of investigation into others of the era is comparatively limited There is a a rich history for Emily yet untold.

Question: 1) Can I interview descendants and use their statements as footnotes for what they say about what their great grandparents told them about that era (when much was not written down? 2) Can I interview and quote one or more historians (assume they have outstanding credentials?

Thanks,

Thank you again for editing Emily Austin Perry.

I just completed a basic framework for her husband, James Franklin Perry. It's shorter and more to the point.

It says there is a broken reference I cannot find. Can you find it? Can yo umake it look more like a wiki article? The footnotes don't presently display.

Thank you for your inclusionist perspective and for adopting me which gives me a chance to highlight parts of Texas/US History that are not yet included in Wikipedia.

Signpost Article

I really didn't have an issue with the article, we've had a few folks campaigning forever to have a Canadian victory in the article for the War of 1812 that has been in all probability one editor (several sock puppets were used to support him as well) when this went to mediation what came out was so mangled that it couldn't be put in the article either and (mostly because of the intransitive nature of said editor) and so it sits to this day. I've said it over and over (I am an American by the way) that the US probably lost that one however the facts just don't support a clean win/loss no matter what we tried to do. It probably comes closest to the truth that this was a war that both sides gave up on in sheer disgust. Tirronan (talk) 05:03, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm taking an indefinite Wikibreak of several weeks to let things fall back into better proportion (with less emotion). Although I've lived in the U.S. since 1960, I was born in London of British parents, still retain U.K. citizenship and generally rooted for Great Britain or Canada when they competed with U.S. players in the recent Winter Olympics (not that I have anything against the latter). So my views and activities on this question are not due to my being a "U.S. editor". I'm not an expert in the history of the War of 1812, but I tended to the view that the war was a draw or a stalemate, rather than a clear victory for either side. The fact that the Canadians held off the Americans is roughly balanced by a successful American resistance to the British Empire. No one gained anything of tangible substance from the war, although the Indians, war casualties, refugees, conscripts, merchants, taxpayers and owners of land that became battlefields lost much. My contribution to the Mediation was mainly editorial, trying to synthesise and clarify what those who'd read the detailed histories could agree on, so that it made more sense to an ordinary lay reader. —— Shakescene (talk) 19:58, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback Question

Hi Draeco,

I've been doing more digging, reading, research, etc, and just noticed I've apparently been granted rollback rights. I'm not sure by who as I didnt see any message letting me know.

On the pages I view diffs or history of, I get these choices: (rollback (AGF)) (rollback) (rollback (VANDAL)) - so I am presuming someone granted me rollback rights? Or is that possibly automatic because I have done a certain number of vandal reverts?

Hopefully, I've been using the tools (and the warning tools) correctly - but now that I realize that this is not a feature very editor has access to (assuming the rollback page is up to date), I was wondering if you have the time to peruse my contributions list you could give me some sorta idea if I have messed up or am properly using them.

Thanks very much, Robert

There is an ongoing edit war here (it keeps popping up in RecentChanges):

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Michael_Bisping&curid=5576823&action=history

Which I have been uninvolved in (in any fashion that I can recall), but thought at this point someone needs to stop it. I wouldnt even have a clue how to report this one... an RFC seems the most likely first candidate?

I'd also like to be adopted. I'm in the process of determining my own philosophy on Wikipedia and found your comments on notability to be particular interesting. More specifically I would love to hear your opinions on 2010 earthquakes. Specifically at what point should earthquakes be added to the list and when shouldn't they. Being an inclusionist makes your input desired as I'm afraid I have taken the opposite approach.--Tmckeage (talk) 18:27, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You definitely gave me food for thought. To me the ideal situation is a group that has requested to be notified by other members of a group if certain criteria are met. Anyone can request to be in the group so it isn't necessarily vote stacking. I also just waded through a day of AfD, while I never voted for deletion I did vote a lot to merge. I don't know if that means I'm not an inclusionist. It seems to me an article in of itself needs notability, if it doesn't meet that criteria it needs to be merged. Also do you know if there is a policy thats something like Wikipedia:poorly constructed articles don't have an expiration date? It seemed like half the time I voted on an article that was my reasoning. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tmckeage (talkcontribs) 22:27, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I have another one. When I look at my watchlist (or for that matter the recent changes page) I see some numbers between the time and the name of the editor, for each entry. Hey Draeco. This is technically User:Hereforhomework but I lost the password to that account without remembering to put down my email. I created a secondary (hopefully temporary) account, User:Hereforhomework2. Just letting you know. But I was wondering if it is at all possible to have someone help me find my original account's password. I put way too much energy and time into that account to have it all just disappear. *sigh*. Goldman Sachs

Hey Draeco:

Thought you should know and take a look I posted this in the discussion page for GS and having written most of the wikipedia entries on the Goldman Sachs SEC suit, I opted to move it with the article where its easily found.

Moving of SEC suit discussion towards top of page.

This is about the boldest thing I have even done on wikipedia, but it really makes sense to move the SEC fraud suit up where it's easily found as volume spiked through the roof upon its filing. Tens of thousands of visitors are coming to this page to read about the suit in plain english, not to have to scour to find it. When the visitation volume decreases, then I'll move the discussion back toward the end of the article. Thank you for your indulgence. Bull Market 08:16, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm seeking adoption

Can you adopt me? I've been editing for a while, and was adopted a while back. but that user hasn't been active on the board in nearly 2 years. It's time for me to get on the right path. Will you help me get there? Bab-a-lot (talk) 11:16, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Worch, the adoptee

Hey. Thanks for the adoption!

I'm trying to create a template (I think that's what they are called) for the purpose of listing my user banners e.g. interests, languages, etc. It appears that people create a child article under their user page e.g. user:Worch/Userboxes. How do I create those? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Worch (talkcontribs) 22:59, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to adoptoffer

After a brief discussion at WT:Adopt-a-User, I have updated the {{adoptoffer}} template to include a date parameter, which should currently be specified as month=May 2010. This is intended to clarify Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption by dividing it into monthly sub-categories, allowing users to see which users might still be seeking adoption and whch are probably inactive. I am currently dating all of the backlogged users for the new categories. As you frequently use the template, I thought I should let you know - are there any other users you think might be worth contacting to publicise the changes? strdst_grl (call me Stardust) 08:31, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed your name appeared a lot as I was working through - updating userboxes for other adopters as well as making your own offers. I can't really think who else to contact, although I have updated the category page - I could send out messages to everyone, but it would probably be more annoying than helpful. Hmmm... strdst_grl (call me Stardust) 15:50, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea either, but I'm sure I can find someone who does. Thanks for the suggestion! strdst_grl (call me Stardust) 16:54, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hello Draeco, Sorry for answering to you so late (a month). I have been quite busy and have not been on Wikipedia in a while. Thank you for offering to adopt me. I am just trying some new and interesting things out in the Wikipedia. One question that I have is what are the rules of posting? Also how do I get a page like this (new section) on my profile? Princess Hours

Hello Draeco, I need your opinion. I was reading through the Princess Hours article (it's one of my fav shows, anyway...) and saw that info kept changing on the page. The info on Airing dates was removed due to less sources, but it seemed fine to me it just needed more sourcing. So I pmed the editor who first posted it and asked them to find more sources. Is that good or bad? The article is Princess Hours EunSoo (talk) 05:22, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick note, can you make sure you subst welcome templates when you add them to a users talk page? Thanks =] ·Add§hore· Talk To Me! 19:01, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Template markup

I'm totally clueless as to how template markup works. My change to the tracklist template was merely a change of words. Sorry I couldn't be of any help. –Chase (talk) 19:35, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a quick guide: Suppose we wanted to create a template called "Formatting example" (which would be situated at Template:Formatting example), that receives two strings of text as input and has to display the first in quotes and the second in brackets. The template markup itself would be:

"{{{1}}}" ({{{2}}})

To use it an article one could use it like this:

{{Formatting example|Some text in quotes|more text, this time in brackets}}

Which would result in:

"Some text in quotes" (more text, this time in brackets)

I hope this will give your adoptee at least a basic understanding of how template syntax works. Please tell them I'd be happy to help with any further questions. While I'm not very active as an editor these days, I usually remain logged in on Wikipedia and should notice any messages on my talk page soon enough. Regards – Cyrus XIII (talk) 01:15, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome

Actually, I've been on Wikipedia for years and years. Sometimes I hadn't bothered signing in to fix pages, so there are great gaps in my activity. Mostly, I correct spelling, punctuation and Spanglish, all very minor edits. Sometimes I will take a clumsy structure and put it a little clearer.

Anyway, I'm also on the ES branch as I live in Chile. And, as I am a publisher of web content, the other day, I decided to finally put up a page about a News site I have been running for quite a while. Back in 1996 or so, I registered LOGIN.CL (kewl domain), and used it for practically nothing. I decided to turn it into a NEWS site after a journalist friend approached me about a regional news service in the Valparaiso area. So, LOGIN REGIONAL was born in 2006. Yesterday, I decided to put up an article on the spanish branch about this site. User DRINI on summarily deleted it, with this message: "It wasn't an article. IT was a promotional."

Now, technically you would call me a n00b when it comes to creating a page, so when I did so, I took a look at GIZMODO (notorious for the iPhone 4G scandal) and EMOL (Chilean bricks and mortar newspaper) source. I created Login Regional which DRINI promptly deleted. Can you look into this and tell me, is this a legitimate reason for deletion?

LOGIN REGIONAL is an accredited publication, recognized by the Municipalities of Valparaiso, of Viña del Mar, of Quilpué, San Antonio, Quillota, Limache, Villa Alemana and others, by the National Congress, by the Regional Intendencia, by OTHER media. It is recognized as a news source world wide. Since its inception in January of 2006, LOGIN REGIONAL has been accredited by the producers of Festival del Viña del Mar as a recognized legitimate medium.

Thanks in advance... Davidrust (talk) 02:42, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Citations

Thanks for your reply (see LOGIN REGIONAL).

Hmmm... citations, citations. I just did something I rarely do: I checked Google for hits for LOGIN.CL ("www.login.cl"), with a result of 73,000. Got to put that in quotes, otherwise you get hits for command language login scripts. I wasn't expecting that. Other than some blogs and others, the only citations I see are from a few firefighter associations in Chile (www.bomberos.cl, www.bombagermania.cl), Radio BIOBIO (they used one of our photos with credit, thank you), DESASTRES.org (which has a somewhat broken site), Miguel Hernandez University in Spain (UMH.es), EMOL cited a story about a child crushed under a wall in March.

We also broke Climate-gate in Chile, a full seven hours before EMOL did (who practically lifted our story word for word). No biggie.

The former Intendant (=Regional Governor) always gave us exclusive interviews. I am sure the new Intendant (Raul Celis Montt) will do so as well, as he is the brother of one of our regular contributors who is a Concejal for the city of Viña del Mar, Andres Celis Montt, who is also the guy responsible for cultural activities.

In any case, I think we are legit. But what does my opinion count for? other than the million and a half hits in four years.

What is your opinion? Davidrust (talk) 20:25, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your consideration. I think I should be able to write this article as well, based on WP:WEB. Let's see what happens. Off to the spanish branch a-editing I go. Davidrust (talk) 22:18, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Draeco, Thanks for the adoption offer! I am definitely interested but not sure I have a lot of time to devote to learning at the moment, so I am going VERY slowly. Btw - I'll add that I'm interested in the adoption offer, esp as you seem so friendly, but I'm really not going to be uber-dedicated, more like just feeling my way around. Is that acceptable? I also wanted to ask u how do I archieve my talk page? EunSoo (talk) 16:13, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but I gotta chime in here as well. I'm trying my best to assume good faith, but the user's starting to arbitrarily move other pages even while facing strong opposition on the previous moves. I think the user thinks that whenever a name needs to be disambiguated, it shouldn't be; instead, an alternative name (like the person's birth name) should be used. He's entitled to his opinion, but that's more of a policy discussion than anything else, and it shouldn't be carried out until it's discussed. It's starting to get pointy because the page moves keep happening.... Can you try to explain in a way that makes sense to the user? I can't seem to get through, unfortunately. SKS (talk) 19:34, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Am, I never said or even thought that their name should be their birth name. I said you should find other alternatives besides a common word like "entertainer". If Rain is an entertainer then what about the others who dable in other fields of work like singing and directing. They should be titled the same, it's called "consistency". "Entertainer" shouldn't be used for people who mainly act or sing or direct and etc. If you ask anyone, anyone at all "What is Rain mainly known for?" they will all give you the answer "music". Introducing pages?

What's the best way for me to introduce a page?

I work with smaller films, legitimate, on IMDB, ones that will get limited releases in festivals and major US cities, but ones that do not yet (often) have Wikipedia entries. I am also part of an art community, and there are artists there who are beginning to get news recognition and shows.

If I source the entries with what the films or art projects are about, who the filmmakers or artists are (sourced from web articles, IMDB, etc.) and where they're playing or showing(festival-wise, to show they're legit) does that seem like sufficient grounds to publish a page or is there a problem there?

I am not looking to add promotional elements, IE, "see it here" type information, merely the basic facts of the project or person, all sourced, of course.

Thanks so much,

Photo question

Dear Draeco

Thank you for your offer to help me, my first question is about adding a picture.

I have a mention on the 'Light Painting' page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_painting

I would like to add a small picture of 'Spirit of Spring' as an example. http://www.jncohen.net/Limited%20Edition%20Prints/Spirit_of_Spring.htm

But I am not prepared to release my copyright. Other pictures are on this page as examples and I wonder if the photographers were forced to release their copyright?

Is there anyway to overcome this?

With kindest regards

John —Preceding unsigned comment added by John N. Cohen (talkcontribs) 07:34, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The simple answer is no, if the image is not freely licenced then we can't use it. However, the artist may be prepared to release a low resolution image under an acceptable Creative Commons licence but we would need their WP:PERMISSION too. You may want to read donating copyrighted materials to get a better understanding of the issue. Fair-use would not be an option as there are already several free images in the article. Hope that helps. ww2censor (talk) 16:41, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your answer but the photo in question is my own and I am not prepared to release the copyright, so it will now not be included in this article. I think this is a pity, as it is so different from the other forms of light painting shown.

But would it be possible to include a link, to my 'Painting with light' page, instead of having the photo? So that readers could see 'Spirit of Spring' and some of these photographs.

Please can you suggest what I can do to enable readers to view what is a very different form of 'Painting with Light' since I am not prepared to give away my image copyright.

Most disappointed. I have three links from that page (one of them was back to Wikipedia) would the page be allowed without the link to my 'Painting with Light' page? The other link is to my free article describing how to do it, must that link go too?

Or were the links removed because of the way I had added them? I did ask you for help, but had no response.

Please let me know how to improve this for your readers.

I have replaced the same link but I have removed the link to my 'Painting with Light' page. So the link is to http://www.jncohen.net/Spirit_of_Spring.htm

Please let me know if this page is now acceptable. Thanks, John (talk) 15:59, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

This last link has been removed again!!! What can I do in order for readers to see some examples without giving up my copyright??? I feel at a loss to understand why my link keeps being removed. Can you please help me? John N. Cohen (talk) 19:03, 25 June 2010 (UTC)John N. Cohen (talk) 19:06, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
