WebP is a new image file format that uses lossy compression.[4] It was designed by Google to reduce image file size to speed web page loading.

WebP is based on VP8's intra frame coding and uses a container based on RIFF.

Google announced the new image format on the Chromium blog on 30 September, 2010.[5]
