The series main characters from left to right: Brian, Lois, Peter, Stewie, Chris, and Meg.

These are characters from the animated American TV series Family Guy. Characters are only listed once, normally under the first applicable subsection in the list; very minor characters are listed with a more regular character with whom they are associated. Characters that appear in only one episode are not listed.

  • Peter Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – An "average," jubby not particularly competent American father, Peter is irresponsible, obese and is a heavy drinker. His IQ falls near the borderline of mental retardation. Peter's complicated ancestry, a recurring theme on the show, includes two different Irish fathers and an African American slave owned by Lois's ancestors (as referred to in the episode Peter Griffin: Husband, Father...Brother?). He is a nominal Roman Catholic.
  • Lois Griffin (voiced by Alex Borstein) – Lois is the housewife/mother. She is a stay-at-home mother who juggles her piano lessons, kids, and husband all in one day, while she dodges her matricidal infant Stewie. Her mom is revealed to be Jewish, even though she was raised Protestant. Her being raised Protestant caused great consternation for Peter's step dad, a devout Catholic. Even though she has an innocent appearance, she is known to have a very wild past (including a meth addiction and a hook-up with Kiss bassist Gene Simmons).
  • Meg Griffin (voiced by Lacey Chabert in Season 1, Mila Kunis in Season 2-present) – Meg, the first child and only daughter, is a self-conscious and unattractive teenage girl. The other family members (and most of the residents of Quahog) treat her with contempt, as an object of abuse, and an outcast.
  • Chris Griffin (voiced by Seth Green) – Chris, the second child, is fat, dim-witted, blond, and emotionally effusive. A recurring gag is that an evil monkey lives inside of his closet.
  • Stewie Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – Stewie is the baby, but often behaves in adult ways such as upper-class speech which everyone understands but fails to take seriously. He talks in posh vocabulary, carries weapons, and invents new technology. In early seasons, Stewie is bent on murdering his mother; in later seasons, he is portrayed as sexually ambiguous, a bit nicer and with suggestions of homosexuality, although he had a crush on Susie (Joe Swanson's daughter) and other female babies who have appeared on the show during its run. However, he still has tendencies of violence. He also exhibits humorously infantile traits, such as treating his teddy bear Rupert as if it were a living person, being completely unable to see people who hide their faces behind their hands when playing with him, and thinking his favorite kiddie-TV show is real.
  • Brian Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – The family's anthropomorphic talking dog, Brian is portrayed as intelligent, and often points out how ridiculous Peter's ideas are. He dates various human women, enjoys the opera and theater, exhibits opinions about politics, and is an unabashed atheist. Over the course of the series, his liberal views become more extreme. His deep feelings for Lois are a running theme in the show, expanded upon in the episode in "Brian in Love" and "Play It Again, Brian". In the episode "The Former Life of Brian," he discovers that he has a human son named Dylan.

Other relatives of the Griffins

Peter's family

  • Francis Griffin (voiced by Charles Durning) – Peter's curmudgeonly Irish American surrogate and adopted father. An obsessively devout Roman Catholic, he hates Lois because she is Protestant/Jewish, and often calls her a "Protestant whore", disapproved of his son's family's lifestyle, and frequently attempts to force his religious views on them. Despite all of this, he truly did love and care for Peter, and showed on multiple occasions to care for his grandchildren. Francis used to have a job at a metal fabrication plant; after his short retirement, he became a body guard for the Pope. In the episode Peter's Two Dads, Francis dies on Meg's 17th birthday when Peter, dressed up as a clown, gets drunk, and tries to ride a unicycle down the stairs, but ends up falling off the stairs and landing on top of Francis. Francis passes away in a hospital, after uttering to Peter: "Peter... you're a fat stinking drunk!". Francis appears at the memorial in "Perfect Castaway" and as a ghost in the episode "Family Goy" to tell Peter not to convert to Judaism.
  • Thelma Griffin (voiced by Florence Stanley in "Holy Crap", Phyllis Diller in all subsequent appearances) – Ex-wife to Francis and mother to Peter. She is 82 years old (as stated in the episode "Mother Tucker"), has gray hair and noticeable wrinkles below her eyes, and wears purple earrings and a purple bead necklace. She also wears glasses like her son and husband and is a heavy smoker. Unlike Francis, she is generally friendly and personable, and gets along well with Lois. Before Francis' death, she divorced him because she had "needs he didn't fill." She often appears with news inconvenient or troubling to Peter and his family.
  • Mickey McFinnigan (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) - Peter's drunken Irish biological father.
  • Nate Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) - Peter's African-American slave ancestor who happens to have been owned by the Pewterschmidt family.

Lois's family

  • Carter Pewterschmidt (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – Billionaire industrialist, shipping mogul, and owner of U.S. Steel with investments in the timber industry (though he later loses this and becomes owner of CNN and TNT, though this is contradicted in "420"). His company in the episode Business Guy is named Pewterschmidt Industry, and he is also a member of a yacht club. He is shown to be friends with other powerful people such as Michael Eisner and Bill Gates. Carter serves as one of the antagonists to the series. He hates Peter with a passion and makes frequent jokes and does various things to embarrass and or cause Peter pain. On rare occasions, though, he and Peter share a friendship and work together, normally with a common goal. He loves Lois but sometimes doesn't listen to her and tries to boss her around. He is married to Barbara Pewterschmidt, with whom he had three children - Lois, Carol, and Patrick (who was revealed to be a murderous maniac who lives in a mental institute and preys on the overweight due to a scarring childhood incident in which he saw his mother cheating on his father with Jackie Gleason). In the episode "No Chris Left Behind," he is a member of the Skull and Bones and also slightly admires Chris.
  • Barbara Pewterschmidt (voiced by Alex Borstein) – Carter's wife, and mother to Lois, Carol, and Patrick. She often speaks in an English accent. Carter often calls her "Babs." It is noted on a few occasions Barbara only married Carter for his wealth and family heritage. She is less hostile towards Peter than her husband is. In appearance, she is basically an older version of Lois. In the episode titled Family Goy, it is revealed she is a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust, and her family name was originally Hebrewbergmoneygrabber. She only changed her religion so she and Carter could gain access to country clubs. In the episode Running Mates, she is described as passive aggressive. Barbara Pewterschmidt is also the ex-wife of billionaire Ted Turner.
  • Carol Pewterschmidt (voiced by Carol Kane) – Lois’s younger sister who has had nine husbands, eight of which have left her. When Carol gives birth in the episode "Emission Impossible" it prompts Peter and Lois to try for a fourth child.
  • Patrick Pewterschmidt (voiced by Robert Downey, Jr.) – Lois’s older brother who has been in an asylum since he was a child when he found his mother having an affair with Jackie Gleason. Lois discovers Patrick for the first time in "The Fat Guy Strangler," and takes him out of the asylum, believing he is sane. He has an imaginary wife named Marion. He turns out to be a serial killer who preys on fat men and after attempting to strangle Peter, he was returned to the mental hospital, where Lois promised to visit him once a month.
  • Marguerite Pewterschmidt - Lois's elderly aunt. She and Lois were very fond of each other, though she and Peter shared a deep hatred for each other. After dying she left her mansion to Lois.
  • Uncle Ray - Lois's uncle (it is unclear as to whether he is her maternal or paternal uncle) who is briefly mentioned in the episode "Family Gay". He is compared with Peter (who was, at the time, an open homosexual) by Lois, who insisted Peter would be treated differently due to his homosexuality like her uncle, who has a "really high-up anus".

Brian's family

  • Jasper (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – Brian's flamboyantly gay cousin, known for random inappropriateness such as constantly telling dirty jokes. Brian stays with him in Hollywood in "Brian Does Hollywood". Jasper marries a Filipino named Ricardo in the episode "You May Now Kiss the... Uh... Guy Who Receives". Jasper also makes a short appearance in "E. Peterbus Unum" during one of Peter's flash backs when Peter gets another dog.
  • Cocoa - Brian's father who was run over by a milk truck. He is never shown, but is referenced by Chris.
  • Biscuit - Brian's mother who lived in Austin, Texas. She is one of many dogs in a breeder mill. She was stuffed after she died and used as a table by her owners. Brian and Stewie steal the body and give her a proper burial (shown in "Road to Rhode Island").
  • Dylan (voiced by Seth Green) - Brian's teenaged human son as revealed in the episode The Former Life of Brian. His mother's name is Tracy Flannigan. The impossible aspects of this are brushed away in the dialogue.

Neighbors

A number of characters in the show live on the same street, Spooner Street, near the Griffins.

The Browns

  • Cleveland Brown (voiced by Mike Henry) – Peter Griffin's mild-mannered black friend, Cleveland owns and runs a deli. Following his departure from Quahog, the character became the star of his own spin-off series, The Cleveland Show.[1]
  • Loretta Marie Callender Brown (voiced by Alex Borstein) – Cleveland's late ex-wife, and the mother of Cleveland, Jr. She had a liking for cricket and the television program Friends. Early in the show, Loretta had a minimal quantity of lines, the bulk of which were "Mm-hmm!" She treats Cleveland harshly, and eventually cheats on him with Glenn Quagmire, leading the Browns to divorce. In the episode "Love Blactually", it is revealed that Loretta has regretted her actions and wants Cleveland back, but he refuses her advances. Cleveland informs her he needs to move on, and advises her to do the same. She takes Cleveland's house in the divorce and puts it up for sale. In The Cleveland Show episode "Gone With the Wind", Loretta dies in an accident when Peter drops an Apatosaurus skeleton (which was dug up by Brian) on her house, causing a fall that breaks her neck.
  • Cleveland Brown, Jr. (voiced by Mike Henry in Family Guy, Kevin Michael Richardson in The Cleveland Show) – In his appearances on Family Guy, he is the hyperactive son of Cleveland and Loretta. He leaves Quahog with his father in the first episode of The Cleveland Show. In the spin-off, he has become severely obese and less hyperactive.

The Goldmans

  • Mort Goldman (voiced by John G. Brennan) – A Jewish pharmacist with Polish ancestry, and one of Peter's friends. He runs Goldman's Pharmacy and was married to the late Muriel, with whom he has one son, Neil. Mort's defining characteristics are his whiny neuroticism, his chronic hypochondria, his wimpy attitude and his general gawkiness. Mort has terrible social skills, frequently discussing his various disgusting (and probably imaginary) maladies and childhood bullying in otherwise polite conversation. He takes on the characteristics of Sol Rosenberg, a character from The Jerky Boys created by Johnny Brennan in the late 1980s.
  • Muriel Goldman (voiced by Nicole Sullivan) – Mort's deceased wife, whose physical appearance was uncannily close to her husband's. She met Mort via a video dating service, presumably during their youth, as they had their first kiss at age of 14 whilst both of them were suffering from a headcold. Later in her life, one of her main recreations was watching old films along with the album Hotel California to find if any of them synchronize. She was murdered in the Season 9 premiere "And Then There Were Fewer" by being stabbed in the back by Diane Simmons. According to Seth MacFarlane's Twitter page, the events of that episode were canon, and her death was a way of killing her off in the TV series.
  • Neil Goldman (voiced by Seth Green) – Mort and Muriel's geeky son. Neil is a stereotypical nerd who has a crush on Meg Griffin, who does not return his affections. He is the editor of the school newspaper and is part of the A/V Club. He is more confident than his father, so much so that he does not seem to realize that Meg has nothing but contempt for him. At one point in the series, both Neil and Meg become interns at Channel 5, and they share a kiss. Neil's voice is lispy and sloppy while he wears his retainer on his teeth (which is most of the time), but changes to a deep, smooth baritone whenever he briefly removes the retainer.

Quagmire

  • Glenn Quagmire (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – The Griffins' next-door sex-addict neighbor and Peter's friend. He is an airline pilot, but is best known for his extreme sexuality, attracted to nearly everything and everyone. He exhibits a vocal tic, the sound "giggity" once or numerous times in rapid succession, particularly when aroused. Quagmire is also known to have sex with various women that he brings home. He has a deaf brother and a domestically abused sister, Harriet.
  • Ida Quagmire - Quagmire's father, formerly named Dan. She is a transsexual who has lived most of her life as a man, serving in the army and earning several honours doing so. In Quagmire's Dad, she comes to Quahog seeking sexual reassignment surgery, which emerges in a conflict between herself and her son, who has little understanding for her decision.
  • Quagmire's mother - In Brian the Bachelor, she is briefly shown living in a trailer park with her cat, Mittens.

The Swansons

  • Joe Swanson (voiced by Patrick Warburton) – The Griffins' paraplegic neighbor and Peter's friend. Before moving to Quahog, Joe was injured in his job as a police officer when stopping the Grinch from stealing Christmas (though some episodes show he has been a paraplegic since he was young). His injury was shown in a flashback in the episode "A Hero Sits Next Door", where he tried to fight the Grinch, and he slipped on a roller skate and fell off the roof. He used to live in Providence, Rhode Island. He also has severe anger issues.
  • Bonnie Swanson (voiced by Jennifer Tilly) – Joe's calm and soft-spoken wife, who had been pregnant from her first appearance in "A Hero Sits Next Door" in season one until "Ocean's Three and a Half" in season seven, when she finally gave birth to a daughter, named Susie. Her prolonged pregnancy was pointed out by Peter in the season four episode "Blind Ambition". James Woods once struck her in the throat in rage over her voice.[2]
  • Kevin Swanson (voiced by Jon Cryer in "There's Something About Paulie", Seth MacFarlane in other appearances) – Joe and Bonnie's son and first child. He was mainly seen in the first three seasons, only making a few occasional appearances after that and very few speaking parts. The Family Guy staff would often joke about Kevin's disappearance and sporadic appearances on episode commentaries, comparing him to Chuck Cunningham from Happy Days. Finally, in the episode "Stew-Roids", Joe said that Kevin died in Iraq.
  • Susie Swanson – Joe and Bonnie's baby daughter, born in "Ocean's Three and a Half". Stewie develops some romantic feelings for her. Susie also beats up Stewie in the episode "Stew-Roids."

The Tuckers

  • Tom Tucker (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – The arrogant, baritone male news anchor at Channel 5. Tom tends to insult everybody around him, particularly Diane Simmons, his former co-anchor. He disliked her and frequently traded insults with her on-air. His family includes Sarah, his second wife, and a son named Jake, whose face is upside down, from his first marriage. He is shown to be protective of his son and dislikes people's use of the term "Freak". MacFarlane stated that Tom Tucker's voice is the easiest to do for him, and he was "sort of modeled after the cigarette spokesman from the 1940s commercials".[3] In the episode "And Then There Were Fewer", Diane Simmons caused the deaths of James Woods, Muriel Goldman, and Derek Wilcox leaving evidence that would frame Tom Tucker. In "Excellence in Broadcasting," Tom Tucker was released from prison and mentions on the news that Diane caused the murders and is now dead. He also introduces Joyce Kinney as Diane's replacement.
  • Jake Tucker (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – Tom Tucker's deformed son and Chris' former classmate. Jake's many appareances show him with an "upside-down face"; a mouth near the top of his head and eyes near the bottom. Toxic waste later gives him a normal face. Jake is typically depicted as a demanding and obnoxious brat.
  • Stacy Tucker - Ex-wife of Tom. After the divorce, she became a hooker.

Citizens of Quahog

  • Mayor Adam West (voiced by Adam West) – The mayor of Quahog. He is a highly eccentric and paranoid politician. He has been shown to be generally irresponsible.
  • Jillian Russell-Wilcox (voiced by Drew Barrymore) – Brian's sexy, bulimic and dimwitted ex-girlfriend, portrayed as a stereotypical blonde. She is very clueless and naive, for example she does not understand that Adolf Hitler was stopped decades ago. First appeared in "Whistle While Your Wife Works". She is the only girlfriend that Brian has dated for more than one episode, and was a recurring character in Season 5. He stays with her purely for sex, though after they split, he felt strong feelings of love for her. She breaks up with Brian in "Movin' Out (Brian's Song)" when it is revealed that Brian did not want a committed relationship with her, and she briefly dated Mayor West. She got married in the episode "We Love You Conrad". In the episode "And Then There Were Fewer" her husband Derek Wilcox was murdered by Diane Simmons, thus making Jillian a widow.
  • Horace (voiced by John G. Brennan) – Proprietor and bartender of The Drunken Clam. Has been shown to have been working there for at least as long as Peter and his friends have been regulars.
  • Herbert (voiced by Mike Henry) – Herbert is an elderly pederast who resides just down the street from the Griffin family and lusts after Chris. In the episode "Play It Again, Brian", Chris finally realizes this and asks Herbert, "Are you a pedophile?" However, Herbert's answer, if any, is not shown. He has a dog named Jesse, who is also very old and is unable to use his hind legs. He has a high-pitched, very soft effeminate voice and pronounces sibilant consonants with a high-pitched whistle. Herbert is often seen wearing a light blue robe and slippers, walks with a walker and frequently makes inappropriate, sexually-tinged comments to teenage boys. It is revealed later on that he is the eldest member of the Skull and Bones secret society. He was also a Corporal in the United States Army. Herbert plays Obi-Wan Kenobi in the "Blue Harvest", "Something, Something, Something, Dark Side" and the upcoming "It's a Trap!" episodes. In "And Then There Were Fewer" he drove an ice cream truck. In an interview, Mike Henry stated that he based Herbert's voice on an old man he used to meet at a grocery store.[4] Before the character was used for the show, Mike would use the Herbert voice to motivate stalled writers at meetings.
  • Bruce (voiced by Mike Henry) – Bruce is a moustached Southerner who speaks in a calm, drawn-out voice with a slight lisp. Though he was not given a name until the episode "No Chris Left Behind," he has appeared in several episodes without being named on-screen. He even comments on it the first time his name is spoken in the series. He has several catch phrases, the most notable being "Oh No!". He first appeared as the clerk of a horror novelty shop, and was then seen sitting astride an obese donkey at the Renaissance fair when Peter fought the Black Knight. He has since been seen with a variety of jobs including a priest, a therapist, a medium, a lawyer, a masseur and a barman. More recently, he was seen working at the bowling alley selling rental shoes, and refereeing the boxing match where Lois fought Dierdre Jackson. He has also been seen training to be a police officer, teaching a CPR course, and is a member of the school board committee of James Woods Regional High School. Although Bruce himself is generally limited to occasional, random appearances, his voice is also lent to a number of anthropomorphic creatures including a large bee, the shark from a parody of Jaws, a Xenomorph from a parody of Aliens, and a giant mutant rat. In "Blue Harvest", he played the role of Greedo. He also makes an appearance as Admiral Piett on the Imperial Star Destroyer in the episode "Something, Something, Something, Dark Side". It is assumed Bruce will reprise his role as Piett in the upcoming "It's a Trap!" episode. He often talks to Jeffrey, his unseen roommate. It is also evident that Bruce is most likely homosexual, and that Jeffrey is his partner.
  • Consuela (voiced by Mike Henry) – Consuela is the head of the Maids' Union. She is of Hispanic origin and speaks very broken English. For example, she pronounces the word "mister" as "misser" and uses incorrect sentence structure. Scenes in which she appears usually follow a format in which she demands cleaning products and is asked if she can go get them herself, to which she responds weakly, "Nnnooooo." She first appears in the episode "Believe It or Not, Joe's Walking on Air" demanding Lemon Pledge in a court case. In the episode "Lois Kills Stewie," she answers the door as Superman's maid at the Fortress of Solitude. She appears in a cutaway in "Ocean's Three and a Half" in the segment, "Are You Smarter Than a Hispanic Maid?". Also in "Dog Gone," she goes to work for the Griffin Family but proves to be so annoying they drug her with chloroform and leave her with Joe. She also appears as Darth Vader's maid in "Something, Something, Something, Dark Side." She has a son in prison. In "And Then There Were Fewer", it was mentioned that she had a nephew who was molested by James Woods when he was fourteen, which resulted in his suicide.
  • Carl (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) - Carl is the manager of the local gas station and convenience store, the Quahog Mini-Mart. He has an interest in sexy women and movies featuring sexy women. He goes out of his way to discuss exciting movies. He is good friends with Brian and eventually becomes good friends with Chris after he gets a job at the gas station. He does not get along with Meg.
  • Seamus (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – Seamus is a tough fisherman with wood for arms and legs. He wears a black eye-patch. He makes his first appearance in the episode "A Fish Out Of Water". While spending time with Peter and the gang in a steam room, it is revealed his whole body from the neck down is wood. Although Seamus initially established in his premier episode that his condition was the result of his father being a tree, in the episode "And Then There Were Fewer" he blames it on James Woods. Seamus claims first that Woods carved him from wood and didn't wish hard enough, but then reveals that he acutally took acid with the actor. Woods then hallucinated Seamus as a steak, eating his entire body sans head in the process. He tends to warn Peter of danger. Seamus had his own talk show in Perfect Castaway.
  • Dr. Elmer Hartman (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – A doctor that works at Quahog's hospital. He temporarily loses his medical license in "Stewie Loves Lois" when Peter accuses him of rape (Hartman had in fact merely performed a normal prostate exam). He manages to regain his license after treating Peter's urination problem. Seth MacFarlane uses the same voice for Dr. Hartman and Carter Pewterschmidt, which is referenced in the show. He has shown a sexual attraction to Peter.[5]
  • Judge (voiced by Phil LaMarr) – An unnamed judge that presides over trials involving any of this show's characters. In one such trial, Peter was being tried for accidentally blowing up a children's hospital and the judge sentenced him to be incarcerated for seven days. "You'll be free by 9 p.m. on Sunday," referring to the show's traditional time slot.
  • Greased-up Deaf Guy (voiced by Mike Henry) – He has been featured in several cameos since his first appearance in the episode "The Thin White Line". He can speak well, but somewhat out of tone. He is always shown running, and even when stopped, he will continue to run in place and flail his arms. In "North By North Quahog", he mentions that he used to be a lawyer, and in the next episode "Fast Times at Buddy Cianci Jr. High", he is seen speaking in court during the show's intro, which parodied Law and Order. He was named Jay after an audience member by the same name in "Family Guy Live" queried his name in a Q&A Session.
  • Paddy Tanniger (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) - A short red-haired angry man seen in several roles throughout multiple seasons. He is best known for ending his statements with "Big whoop, wanna fight about it?", even when not applicable. He is eventually run over by a tank piloted by Brian and Stewie in Hell Comes to Quahog.
  • Santos and Pasqual - A pair of Portuguese immigrants who do not speak English. All of their dialogue is subtitled and not understood by the cast. They lament leaving Portugal for various low-paying jobs in Quahog such as caterers, fishermen, janitors, and babysitters. Peter treats them deplorably.

Peter's colleagues

Peter has held many jobs. A small number of his colleagues have been shown on screen.

Happy-Go-Lucky Toy Factory

  • Jonathan Weed (voiced by Carlos Alazraqui) – Peter's boss at the toy factory, who spoke with a Hispanic accent and was described as an "effeminate weirdo" by his employees. He disapproved of nearly all of Peter's actions, mainly because most of them were detrimental to the company, and has fired or come close to firing Peter on multiple occasions. In "Mr. Saturday Knight", he was invited to the Griffins' house for dinner. He promotes Peter to head of toy development and minutes later, chokes to death on a dinner roll. His video will describes how the factory will be replaced by a children's hospital, starting 'now'; the machinery endangers everyone attending the meeting. His great-grandfather's surname was 'Bermudagrass' after the weed-like, invasive species of ground cover Bermuda grass. He is later mentioned by Stewie right before he attempts to kill Lois in "Lois Kills Stewie".[6]

Pawtucket Brewery

  • Angela (voiced by Carrie Fisher) – Peter and Opie's supervisor, in charge of the Shipping Department. She likes Opie far better than Peter, and treats Peter very coldly, repeatedly rewarding Opie as employee of the month. In the season 8 episode "Peter-assment", Angela targets Peter with sexual lust after Peter comes to work without wearing his eyeglasses. After Peter refused to have sex with her, she tried to poison herself with carbon monoxide in her car. After Peter rescued her, it was revealed that she has not dated anyone in 10 years. Feeling sorry for her, Peter disguised himself as a stereoptypical 1920s New York billionaire, and had sex with her. Angela knew it was really Peter, but what she did not know was Peter hid Mort in his trousers so it was Mort who actually had sex with her, not Peter.
  • Fouad (voiced by Mike Henry) - Fouad is a recent US immigrant, apparently of Arab ethnicity. In all his appearances, he shows eagerness to develop an understanding of Anglo-Saxon humor and its subtleties. He laughs loudly at ironic or sarcastic comments before proceeding to explain the joke, using the format "Ohohoho! Ees funny beecoz...". He was introduced by Peter in the Season 5 episode "Chick Cancer" as that foreign guy at work who helped him understand sarcasm.
  • Opie (voiced by Mark Hentemann) – Opie is a severely mentally disabled co-worker and ward of the state at Peter Griffin's workplace, the Pawtucket Patriot Brewery. He has won "Employee of the Month" more than once and has since been promoted ahead of Peter. He enjoys biting fingers, a practice Angela encourages.

Characters based in other locations

Some characters are based in other locations, such as Meg's and Chris' school. Additionally, regular cutaway gags feature the newsreaders as the local TV network.

James Woods Regional High School

  • Principal Shepard (voiced by Gary Cole) – The principal of James Woods Regional High School.
  • Connie D'Amico (voiced by Fairuza Balk in Seasons 1 and 2, Lisa Wilhoit in all seasons afterwards) – The most popular girl in school. Connie is portrayed as extremely egotistical, shallow, promiscuous and vain. She shows great disdain toward Meg and plays cruel pranks on her with her friends. However, more than once Connie has formed an alliance with Meg; while this is usually to further her own social standing, at least once — in the episode "Stew-Roids" — Connie turns to Meg after she realizes what it is like to be shunned and mercilessly taunted by her classmates. Chris has been noted to like her, and it is possible that she likes him as well (see Stew-Roids). Connie has kissed every child of the Griffin family, having dated Chris when he briefly became popular, Stewie when he posed as a student, and Meg kissed her after beating her with a bag filled with soda cans. She also danced with Peter at the Winter Snowball dance.
  • Mr. Berler (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) - Meg's math teacher. Shown in "Let's Go to the Hop" stopping Meg from hanging out with Connie and her friends. In "And the Wiener Is...", he is shown to have a fear of vampires; Meg stays up all night holding a stake while Berler sleeps with garlic around his neck, in exchange for the answers to the math test. He catches Chris in the boys bathroom holding alcohol that Jake Tucker took from his father in "North by North Quahog".
  • Mr. Fargus (voiced by Dwight Schultz) - Peter's old science teacher who apparently still works at the school. He was introduced in "Running Mates". He needs to take medication to control a condition—and when he does not he is mentally unstable, though considered fun by the students.
  • Esther (voiced by Tamera Mowry later by Christina Millian) - Meg's friend.

Channel 5 (WQHG)

  • Tom Tucker (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) – See: The Tuckers.
  • Diane Simmons (voiced by Lori Alan) – The news station's late former news anchor and talk show hostess. In the episode "The King Is Dead", it was revealed that her birth name was Diane Seidelman. She and fellow anchor Tom Tucker often traded insults on the air. Her largest role on the show was when Peter hired her to play Anna in his version of The King and I; she quit after he kept changing everything. It was revealed that her husband killed himself after Tom asked, "Diane, didn't your first husband blow his head off?" In the hour-long season 9 premiere "And Then There Were Fewer," it was mentioned that she used to date James Woods until he broke up with her around the same time when Tom Tucker tried to replace her. This caused her to plan revenge on both men with James Woods ending up murdered and leaving evidence that Tom Tucker murdered Muriel Goldman, Derek Wilcox, James Woods' girlfriend Priscilla and Quagmire's then-girlfriend Stephanie. In an attempt to murder Lois after she found out, she was shot and killed at the last moment by Stewie using a suppressed sniper rifle. In "Excellence in Broadcasting," she was replaced by Joyce Kinney.[7] Lori Alan has appeared in Seth MacFarlane's animated short Larry & Steve, a precursor to Family Guy. When Family Guy was created, Alan auditioned for the role of Lois, but eventually was cast as Diane.[8] Alan stated that she based Diane's voice on her mother who was also a voice actress.[8] In the "And Then There Were Fewer" episode, Diane reveals that she worked with Tom for 15 years.
  • Tricia Takanawa (voiced by Alex Borstein) – Typically referred to as "Asian reporter Tricia Takanawa", she speaks in a monotone cadence that Borstein has described as "all presentation and no substance". She is a mockery of Connie Chung.
  • Ollie Williams (voiced by Phil LaMarr) – The news station's Black-U-Weather Forecast reporter. Ollie Williams is a fast-talking black man who works at the Quahog News Station. Ollie never speaks for more than about 1–3 seconds. His news reports are always rapidly spoken and loud. The only time he was ever calm was in "420", having smoked marijuana. Ollie has only spoken for longer than 3 seconds on two occasions, one in an episode where Ollie and Tom were talking about him stuck in a rainstorm with his umbrella blown away, and in Lois Kills Stewie where he recaps the previous episode of Stewie Kills Lois. When Peter, Cleveland, and Joe hijacked an airplane, and Ollie was reporting the incident, he said "I'm at the wrong airport!" He has a close resemblance to Al Roker.
  • Joyce Kinney (voiced by Christine Lakin) - Joyce was introduced in the episode "Excellence in Broadcasting" as a successor to the late Diane Simmons. Little is known about her at this time but later in Season 9, a future confirmed episode titled "And I'm Joyce Kinney" should shed some more light on the new co-anchor of Channel 5 News.

Recurring characters

  • Death (voiced by Norm Macdonald in the first appearance, Adam Carolla in later appearances) – Death is a skeleton in a black robe and seldom removes his hood; underneath his hood is a human skull with spiders and snakes crawling in and out of the eye sockets, mouth and ear cavities, as seen in "Death Lives". In the episode "I Take Thee Quagmire", it is revealed that anyone who touches his bones dies instantly (though in "Death is a Bitch" this is contradicted). Death was almost cast as Darth Sidious in Something Something Something Dark Side, but it was decided Carter Pewterschmidt had a more appropriate "feel". [citation needed]
  • Evil Monkey (voiced by Danny Smith)[9] – The Evil Monkey was a monkey living in Chris' closet, who scared Chris whenever he jumps out of the closet by pointing at him with an evil grimace and a strange tremble (which the monkey says is a copper deficiency). The family thought the Evil Monkey was a figment of Chris' imagination and they ignored his pleas. In "Hannah Banana", Chris does poorly on a test at school and blames the Evil Monkey, who he says scared him while he was trying to study. Peter and Lois are fed up with Chris talking about the monkey, but are taken aback when Chris proves it is real by capturing it and showing it to them. The Evil Monkey turns out not to be evil after all. He explains he was forced to move into Chris' closet after his wife had an affair and divorced him (revealed in the episode "Ready, Willing, and Disabled"), and pointing at Chris was only his way of trying to make conversation. Chris is at first unconvinced, but when Monkey helps him write a book report with a passing grade, Chris becomes great friends with him. Soon Chris realizes that Peter never gave as much attention to him as Monkey has just now and grows to resent him, while Peter becomes jealous of Monkey. Monkey helps Peter and Chris make up according to Lois' wishes. Eventually, Monkey moves out of Chris' closet and parts ways with him, saying "I'll go where I'm needed", and moves to Jake Tucker's closet as his new haunt. The monkey's trademark grimace and pointing was the idea of writer Mike Barker.[10]
  • Ernie the Giant Chicken (voiced by Danny Smith) – A giant chicken that often fights with Peter Griffin. The fight scenes are often very dramatic, very long and involve the destruction of large sections of Quahog. Peter ends up winning most of the time, despite being severely injured. This rivalry was shown to have started when Peter was 18, he accidentally punched Ernie while dancing with Lois where a student holds him back telling him that he probably won't see him again.
  • Buzz Killington - Buzz Killington's name is a play on the phrase "buzz-kill". He is in an older man, always seen in fancy dress. He usually brings up awkward topics nobody has an interest in, thus removing much of the fun.
  • Bertram (voiced by Wallace Shawn) - He was first shown in the third season, episode 11, "Emission Impossible", as an unborn sperm when Stewie enters Peter's body and tries to eliminate all the sperm until it came to him. In Season 4, Episode 22, "Sibling Rivalry," Peter replaced all the sperm at a sperm bank with his own and Bertram's sperm went to a lesbian couple (one of whom was the gym teacher at Meg's school). He and Stewie rekindled their rivalry where they fight for the domination of the playground. Stewie manages to fend him off.
  • Frank Sinatra, Jr. (Himself) - Frank Sinatra Jr. is a lounge singer who befriended Brian.
  • James Woods (Himself) – James Woods is a famous actor and one of the show's major antagonists; his fictional persona is of a criminal sociopath. He was invited by Peter Griffin to help deal with the name change for James Woods Regional High School in Quahog. While Brian's attentions were turned to his girlfriend, Shauna, Peter became friends with Woods. This friendship ended badly when Woods becomes jealous of Brian. Peter and Brian end up luring James Woods into a crate box trap where he is shipped off to be studied by "top men." Woods returns in "Back to the Woods", stealing Peter's wallet and assuming his identity. Peter retaliates, assuming Woods's identity and ruining his credibility on The Late Show with David Letterman. When James Woods shows up to fight Peter, he is once again lured into a crate box trap and is shipped off to be studied by "top men" again. In Something, Something, Something, Dark Side, James Woods makes an appearance as General Maximilian Veers. In Brian Griffin's House of Payne, the CBS producers hire James Woods to star in Brian Griffin's show opposed to Brian's idea to cast Elijah Wood in the lead role. James Woods reappeared in And Then There Were Fewer, in which he became born-again Christian. Outside of his terrorizing of the Griffin Family, James Woods was also revealed to have stolen Cheryl Tiegs from Quagmire, hit Bonnie Swanson for her funny voice, talked Tom Tucker out of auditioning for Robert Englund's role on A Nightmare on Elm Street and stole Mayor Adam West's Twitter name. Furthermore, he introduced Diane Simmons to Danny Bonaduce instead of Dan Rather, molested Consuela's nephew causing him to commit suicide, and cutting up Seamus while they were both high on acid. He ultimately turns his life over to Jesus but ends up dead as part of an elaborate (and ultimately successful) murder plot orchestrated by Diane Simmons in which she killed Woods and his girlfriend Priscilla as well as Muriel Goldman, Derek Wilcox, and Quagmire's date Stephanie.
