Unfamiliarity with endorsing statements

Showing my unfamiliartiy with how some things on Wikipedia function, I wanted to ask what the purpose of endorsing statements is, specifically the section you put up in Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages). This isn't a "why did you do that" sort of question at all, I just want to be sure I know what the function of it is before I add my thoughts. Is it officially part of the Dispute Resolution process, or just a good thing to do with disputes? Thanks for answering my silly questions. :) -- Natalya 17:08, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply, I am glad to understand how it works now. On a somewhat unrelated topic, I really enjoy working on WP:DPL, and disambiguation pages in general (hence how I got involved with this wonderful disagreement). I find that it's a good area of improvement that can be worked through on a regular basis, and doesn't involve writing massive articles. -- Natalya 21:17, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

creating bots

I am a computer information student at Regis University in Colorado Springs Colorado USA. I have taken a few programming courses but have no experience what so ever. I sure would like to learn a little about how a bot is created. I would sure be appreciative of an thing I could do to assist you. my email address is: mrtloch@adelphia.net. Thanks tloch

That’s the last time I’m ever leaving my computer unattended again. Sorry for what appeared to be me vandalising your user page. I was just talking to the school’s technician and when I returned I realised that the guy sitting next to me had edited under my account. I’m so sorry and I realise I may have to explain this again in the course of the next few days. By the way, the IP address I was using was 194.80.20.10, and I am pretty sure whoever it was vandalising under that address before was the same person who edited under my name. FireFoxT • 13:33, 24 January 2006

Hmm, I don't recall saying anything to them about you two. I believe he started off looking at Ali K's userpage, and as I think it says on there that you're her brother, he may have followed the link from there. I'm really sorry - I feel so bad about it :( FireFoxT • 13:51, 24 January 2006

dab dispute

I've been gone a couple of days, since my backing away from the dab dispute. I've just begun catching up, but I see you're on the receiving end from William Allen Simpson. Please let me know if there's anything you think I can do to help, other than just stay out of it. It doesn't feel right to stay out of it, somehow. I'll read what's gone on and then leave it alone to decide what to do. Feel free to comment, if you like. Tedernst | talk 16:18, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit sick to my stomach reading all of this, actually. I have no idea how to engage him, nor any real desire to do so at this point. Dispute resolution seems appropriate. I'd love outside opinions, actually. I just need to get myself prepared for his attacks. He's been really brutal towards me and it makes me not even want to be here. Thanks for your support. Dab issue

A new user has some probs in understanding about dab. Unfortunately, I'd be on a wikibreak soon. Can you help him out - I guess he hasn't understood things properly and I dunno if I'm not able to explain to him properly - Please have a look at User_talk:BostonMA#Ravi_Shankar and engage the user. You may also want to revert all the changes he made by the time I am back from my break ;}. As of now, no harm has been done, but Ravi Shankar is redundant with Ravi Shankar (musician). The latter can be deleted after undoing the move. TIA, --Gurubrahma 18:41, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Gurubrahma left a note on my talk page that I could discuss some things with you. I was in the process of disambiguating Ravi Shankar (about 2/3 done) when I received Gurubrahma's note.

Here is my reasoning for what I began doing. There appear to me to be at least three kinds of links that need fixing:

 1. links to the wrong article
 2. links to disambiguation pages
 3. links to non-existent articles

Naive editors are likely to make new links to a title without actually looking at that the article. That is not only a reasonable assumption, but is evident in the links that were created to Ravi Shankar. It is likely that even experienced editors may make links to the wrong article in the process of "wikifying" an article. For example, an editor notices the name Ravi Shankar in an article and wikifies it, without carefully examining whether the Ravi Shankar in the text corresponds to the musician. If Ravi Shankar points to a disambiguation page, then naive linkers will create the second type of link that needs fixing. When an editor makes a link to Ravi Shankar, the greatest probability is that they are referring to the sitar virtuoso. Gurubrahma argues that in such cases, Ravi Shankar should point to the musician and not to the disambiguation page. That way the majority of new links will be correct.

However, my reasoning is this. The cost of fixing a link to an incorrect page is much higer than the cost of correcting a link to a disambiguation page. In the latter case, all of the links that need to be fixed can be found in one list. There is a one-time cost to look at a reference and determine to which it ought to link. On the other hand, when links to the wrong article are introduced, for example when an text about a poet links to the article about Ravi Shankar the sitar player, such an error can be discovered only by repeatedly scanning references to the Ravi Shankar article, either by scanning the list of "what links here", or in an ad hoc way as users read articles and suspect an error. Thus, I think the cost of fixing links to the wrong article are much worse than the cost of fixing links to disambiguation pages. That was my rationale for turning Ravi Shankar into a disambiguation page. Please express your opinion on the subject. --BostonMA 19:25, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Addendum: Also, I think the costs of not fixing the links should be examined. A link to a disambiguation page that is not fixed results in a user requiring an extra step, extra effort in obtaining the information for which that user is seeking. A link to the wrong article may lead the user to draw incorrect conclusions, such as that Ravi Shankar, the musician, is an alumnus of Government Victoria College, Palakkad (which is false). --BostonMA 19:41, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Assassination

When I posted my question yesterday, it was the first time I had ever used Wikipedia, so I was -- and am -- not all that sure about what I am doing.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I found the answer to my question today. Alfred Herrhausen was the head of Deutsche Bank in Germany. He was assassinated by the Red Army Brigade in 1989 in the way described by the Wikipedia "Assassination" site. A copper plate 8 inches in diameter, weighing 5 pounds, was blown through his car, like a large bullet, by 22 pounds of TNT. Herrhausen's legs were severed and he bled to death.

I remembered reading about this back in 1989 when it happened, and I've been looking for the information off and on for several years. After seeing the movie "Munich" recently, I started seriously looking for the information.

My theory, though it appears not to have held up, was that the use of a metal plate as a projectile was a Moussad technique that they discovered quite by by accident in connection with the assasination of Mahmoud Hamshiri in Paris in 1972.

Anyway, thanks for offering to help me.

Hi commander, could you possibly email me at my yahoo address, if you are online at the moment? There's an issue that needs off wiki attention on on of our mate's pages. Ta SatuSuro 10:19, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, got distracted by life etc, have sent the email to explain, and I still think its worth having a look at it all, as I think we need to support him! He's one of ours and a good one! SatuSuro 12:59, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose my sense of urgency has slowed down looking at the talk page involved, a somewhat dramaitc turn on my part, but what was concerning me if I hadnt caught up with someone within a reasonable amount of time to an online admin person, there might have been the possibility of further points arising SatuSuro 13:04, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

emo

Hey fella,

Hope you're happy and well mate. I absolutely love the wikipedia conept and ethos, and decided to contributed to the site today. Im in my final ear of uni doing BSc (Hons) in Internet computing, and im into emo music, which is why i thought id add the funny flash animation depicting how to be emo.

I realise u removed the link, and im just wondering why. I am new to wiki, and respect your decision, however to learn how to contribute more effectvely in the future id just like a little guidance.

Cheers,

S

I'll reply here, since I don't know whether 87.115.242.59 is your static IP or if it's a proxy/dynamic. Well, Emo is a disambiguation page. (WP:DAB has more info). Disambiguation pages exist to direct readers to an article, and so they don't have an external links section. Maybe your external link would be best placed at Emo (slang), keeping in mind that this is an encyclopedia - so it would have to include information that helps readers. I encourage you to create an account - I have a feeling you'd be a great contributor and there are lots of good reasons. If/when you do create an account let me know and I'll welcome you! If you don't get an account that's fine, you can still contact me here.--Commander Keane 16:06, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help

What help are you looking for? -- Natalya 21:49, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I understand. I'm glad at least you find my silliness refreshing. :) That's actually a kind of interesting coincidence, I just ran into Wikipedia:Boot Camp today while looking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Community. It seems like a pretty cool deal. I see there's already a link to it on the Tutorial, that's a good place. I can't really think of a better way to let newcomers know then through welcome messages (since that's really the only thing they're guarenteed to read), but has the Welcoming Committee had it suggested that people include a link to it in their welcoming messages (since they will be doing a large amount of the welcoming)? Just ignore that last suggestion, I just noticed that a lot of the Standard user greetings already have a link. Looks like you're getting the word out! -- Natalya 03:15, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming good faith

In dealing with Anacapa you have used edit summaries like "rv POV pushing" [1].

Anacapa is here to write good encyclopedia articles so please assume good faith and use don't inflammatory edit summaries. You might also want to take at look at Anacapa's talk page where some concerns are raised.--Commander Keane 05:17, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

if you take a look of the edit histories of multiple anonymous IPs (that i am positive is the same as Anacapa) - these can be found at Talk:Excommunication, you will see that it is obvious that she (i believe Anacapa is a woman, but of course i cannot be sure) has a big axe to grind. it is simply not true that her intent is "to write good encyclopedia articles" but is instead to push a particular POV. there is no doubt. r b-j 17:34, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template:welcome

Hi Commander Keane. A couple of days ago, when I removed the links to the wikipedia bootcamp from the welcome template, you put the link to {helpme} back, citing consensus on the talk page. Well, it seems that now you are breaking that consensus, by adding in the bootcamp link.

I am sure that Danny feels very strongly about the bootcamp, but as you noticed, the opinions are leaning towards removing that link.

I could use my administrator's privileges to undo your edit, but I will not do that. I have spent a week arguing that matter on the talk page (with the bootcamp link in), and am willing to spend a week more. But for future reference, I suggest you act with more discernment in these matters. Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk)

Thanks for not removing the additions. I know what I am doing, I trust Danny.--Commander Keane 03:51, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Commander Keane, it is not about Danny; I respect your trust of him, and I believe it is warranted.
It is about all the people who worked hard to establish a consensus. Oleg Alexandrov (talk)

It's nothing to do with consensus, it's about helping new users. Danny wants to help new users (he has to deal with them on the phone every day), I want to help new users. Take a look at User talk:Jrbrunger. Read it. In two minutes I was there, we got a new article, we probably secured a fantastic new contributor. That's what this is all about.--Commander Keane 04:05, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I wrote on template talk:welcome, there are plenty of ways of helping users, none the least being {helpme}.
I also like to help users, and I understand your excitement about the new project.
However, Commander Keane, consensus is a good thing to have. All of us are well-intentioned people wishing the best for Wikipedia. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 04:14, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thx for your help on AU-states. Can you delete Template:Infobox_Language? it has been voted for deletion ca. 15:1. If not, thx anyway for reading. regards Tobias Conradi (Talk) 04:41, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thx for del! I moved and changed maybe 100 refs per hand. No opposition to the move. If you could use your bot for "language -> Infobox Language" in the article name space this would clean a little, even if Netoholic claims there is no significant benefit of changing the refs. Categories that are members of themselves?

I've noticed that some user categories appear as members of themselves. Take for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:MIRC_users or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Secular_Humanist_Wikipedians. On the other hand http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedians_against_censorship and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedians_against_censorship do not. It seems to me these category loops are undesirable... but I can't figure out how to fix it. Deleting all of the formatting from one of those catory pages did not remove the loop. Any ideas? Article on AfD

Hey Commander Keane, thanks for the quick response. I'm monitoring Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alpha Chi Alpha which I placed on AfD. Obviously I'm biased to having the article deleted, but if it stays it stays, I'm all for the Wiki democratic process on AfD. This probably sounds like paranoia but I find it strange that the last person who voted is a new user whose lone edit was voting to keep the article (.e. Jedsa) and that also Jdubrule who hasn't been active over the past month, pops up to vote for the issue. I just find it strange that I haven't seen them on AfD at all until now. I'm assuming good faith in that they are seperate users who are involved in the contents of the article, but is there any possible way to check if they are sock puppets? Stranger things have happened on AfD. If not, sorry for wasting your time. Thanks --† Ðy§ep§ion † 08:03, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

welcome issues

I had to post a warning anyway, so I thought, "hey, what the fuck, why not welcome him too?" I do understand how dynamic IPs work, and yes, I know what a template is. I usually don't use them, because they are impersonal and annoying (many non-new users get welcomed. This can be pretty insulting to someone with numerous edits or articles he has written.), but in this case it seemed to be useful. The use of text from the template was an afterthought, and I didn't think it would matter that much. As it was, the links ended up working pretty well. That help template was a mistake. Sorry about that. Sorry if I stepped on your toes, commander. Brokenfrog 06:48, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

helpmebot

Hi, I haven't manage to get the stats on the toolserver yet, since I've got problems accessing it (I lost my private key when my laptop HD went wrong), and haven't heard back from kate yet regarding getting a new one installed.

I have put up a copy at User:Helpmebot/stats

The online check unfortunatley is not that practical, since accessing WP is a slow process (and can be very slow). However what I intend to do, once I've got access to the toolserver is change the mechanism: If the toolserver database is upto date with (say) 1 minute, I'll use that - checking it every 10-20 seconds. As soon as a new entry occurs, I'll report everything on the queue including the new one. If the toolserver database is not upto date then fallback to the current position. I can probably tweak this to check on a more frequent basis (say every minute) and again report as soon as a new addition is found. For both methods it'll repeat the list 3 minutes after the last report if it still isn't empty...

This should hopefully fill the gap and make us more responsive. --pgk(talk) 17:29, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Touching

I noticed your comment about "touching" pages at User talk:Fplay. This isn't a direct response to that, but you might be interested to know that on occasion when I've tried "touching" a page, the edit does actually show up in the history because the page had a newline at the beginning which was removed in my (non-) edit, even though didn't do a single thing between clicking "edit" and "save". I don't have an example from this wiki to show you, but if I can remember which Wikipedia this happened in, I'll post a link to the diff here (unless you already know about this phenomenon, in which case nevermind). - dcljr (talk) 21:30, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know what a null edit is and how to do one; I've had to do them many, many times when making certain changes to templates and categories. Despite your "assurances", I'm telling you that what I described has happened more than once, although no more than a handful of times. Here are two such edits from the Esperanto Wikipedia: [2], [3]. If you look at my contributions (see 25–26 January 2006), you can see that I had just changed eo:Ŝablono:Vikipediisto eo-0 to prevent non-Esperanto speakers from showing up in eo:Kategorio:Vikipediisto eo. To get the affected users out of the category I had to do null edits on about 10? user pages. Two of these edits turned out not to be "null" after all, although I'll be damned if I can figure out what "diff" thinks the differences are: [4] vs. [5], and [6] vs. [7]. I think you can see for yourself, there don't seem to be any differences between the versions. - dcljr (talk) 01:20, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your robort has made an edit on a disambiguation page, which violates Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages).

 • Unlike a regular article page, don't wikilink any other words in the line, unless they may be essential to help the reader determine where they might find the information. For example:

Mennonite/Excommunication/Shunning facts dispute

Thanks for jumping in here. Please let me what you see as we go ahead, especially if you see something I can do that is constructive. It seems to be working just to state the case. Anacapa 05:53, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commander,

Please take a glance at our last entries on the Excommunication talk page. Please give me feedback or suggest who else could assist us with this. Also please comment on my last question in the last entry. Thanks Anacapa 05:39, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about my lack of specificity above. Please glance at 'Amish and Mennonite NPOV and facts dispute' at the top of the Excommunication discussion page. There is too much parochial argument there to waste much time digging through it all, but it would help me if you have speicific suggestions about tone, content etc. I would also like you to read my last entry there (2/16/06), and suggest possible paths out of this logjam. I could, for example, suggest that they write their 'truths' and I write mine in separate paragraphs. I can find plenty of sources but POV is the real issue here. For centuries Amish/Mennonites/Hutterites have been silencing the voices of those they shun because they want to be seen by the public as nice people. I insist on a balanced, NPOV, article on Anabaptist excommunication and shunning here because it is a huge, though well-concealed, part of the Anabaptist tradition that has caused much mayhem. Please offer feedback on how I can complete these articles with no new edit wars if we cannot come to terms here.

(Note: The merge issue is a separate issue that I had no problem with and resolved with Cuinado with relative ease a month or two ago. As far as I know, the merge issue did not involve Mennonites at all. It was simply a cleanup issue.) Thanks Anacapa 05:43, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

how about your bot wikifying all the first mentionings of borough in these articles? maybe link to "Borough (Pennsylvania)" to easily allow more specific treatment in the future. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 14:06, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

there is "Borough (New Jersey)" because the boroughs have differing meanings in the US. It was not meant to change borough to borough (Pennsylvania) but to change borough to borough (Pennsylvania) or more correctly to borough. Because all these articles except the first that I did by hand have no wikified "borough". I'll go to bot request. At the end that's the right place. best Tobias Conradi (Talk) 16:08, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

but i'm searching for this quote--I can't remember any exact words but I remember reading it on a wikipedian's user page.

it said basically that an internet is a reflection of everything we are, all the good stuff and all the bad stuff, and that it's good because basically it reveals in the end, that we're okay.

if you can find the exact quote i would be so thrilled.

Found it!

"The Internet has created the most precise mirror of people as a whole that we've yet had. It is not a summary prepared by a social scientist or an elite think tank. It is not the hagiography of an era, condensed by a romantic idealist or a sneering cynic. It is the real us, available for direct inspection for the first time. Our collective window shades are now open. We see the mundanity, the avarice, the ugliness, the perversity, the loneliness, the love, the inspiration, the serendipity, and the tenderness that manifest in humanity. Seen in proportion, we can breath a sigh of relief. We are basically OK."

My first entry

"Handsworth Park wiki" was the incorrectly uploaded file, but the link you just gave me to "Handsworth Park, UK" looks correct (tho' it may not yet conform to Wiki convention which I've still to learn). Can you tell me why I can't get "Handsworth Park" on the Wikipedia Search. Has it yet to be vetted? Also if is accepted how do I link it to other Handsworth references in Wiki? Thanks Simon

Handsworth Park

Dear Commander K

Many thanks. Yes "Go" worked v. satisfyingly.

I like the tidying up you've done as well. The material is not copyrighted. The only contentious item I'd suspect is the contested reasons for moving the Carnival/Festival to another site although it had its Birmingham origins in Handsworth Park.

I am trying to grasp some of the other instructions. Do you mean I must type in "..____" or is it just "____" or even "----"? Repeat please.

I was going to go to the other Handsworth references (some of them - not the Handsworth in Sheffield) and insert a link back to my entry but although I am not unfamiliar with hyperlink insertion, i can't quite understand your instructions. Do square brackets make the insertion become a hyperlink?

Best Simon

Handsworth Park

Dear Commander

When I try to edit my entry. Carnival is misspelled as "Carnivale" the edit link brings up only the references and not the main body of text.

Sorry to bother you with all these questions as I learn. Also did you put in the link to Handsworth Park in the Handsworth reference? I wasn't me as far as I know as I could not bring up that part of the text. Any reasons?

S

I fixed the image links, if you wouldn't mind taking another look. Thanks! Sucker straight 14:06, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The second link (the one that reads "©08/02/05 RMIT University , RMIT University. shape of the Eiffel tower

Commander Keane,

indeed your first explanation is probably correct: "constant stress"

In my days (the late 50-ties) this was a favorite exercise for high school and first year engineering students:

Design a tower with constant stress, the Eiffel tower's exponential shape is the result.

I understad, Eiffel in effect "fell" on the "tower" idea when he studied this shape as a support pillar for bridges:

if the exponential cone is not cut (as when it supports a bridge) it can be made infinitely high if the diameter at the top becomes small enough.

And again, the stress in the building material never changes: always the same weight per cut area, independent at what height the cone is cut.

Eiffel's "building material" were his pre-fabricated triangular building blocks.

Black Patch Park

Can you help wikify my latest entry on Black Patch Park? Also, a volunteer has taken out my x-reference to Roma people (I realise this is a v.sensitive issue) but the history of this park revolves around the way the Romany were evicted from it. My long term friend - a Gypsy and campaigner for Gypsy rights and author of a book on Gypsies of the New Forest - Len Smith - has told me that Black Patch Park is well known in Romany History. We now have the irony that the present campaign to protect the park is being assisted by the descendents of the very families who were forcibly evicted from the Black Patch to create a park for the new industrial workers. Do you not think this is a Roma People case study worthy of a x-reference between Black Patch and Roma people?

Many thanks for your assistance. By the way i do not resent the editing. it is what Wiki is all about and i appreciate the opportunity to make the case but in order to do it properly I value your help. Simon

Royall Tyler disambiguation

Hi there, thanks for responding. After doing a quick Google search on just the name Royall Tyler, it looks like the playwright gets more results than the translator.

All I know about the translator offhand is that he is a retired professor of Japanese literature at Australian National University, and that he comes from the USA. There's some more info in the book I'm reading, which unfortunately is not with me at the moment.

I suppose the first approach you mentioned would be fine. Again, thanks. --Tachikoma 15:39, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My bad. My apologies.

I guess my temper is flaring.

I feel that I have tried to make changes to this article to bring it more in line with Wikipedia's guidelines about sources and neutral point of view, but a group of fellow editors seems to keep reverting any change anyone makes. I know I'm only presenting my side, but that's how I see it.

Once again, my apologies.

Could you take a look at it, and just see if you agree with my basic assessment of the dispute (not necessarily on whether I am write or wrong in my edits). I'm new at creating pages like that, and want to make sure that I presented the case as neutrally as possible.

Thanks.

TheRingess 02:53, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, this is with reference to your reply on the Radio Jockey article. First pardon me for my ignorance as I am relatively new here.

Now what I wanted to do is, highlight the fact that this entry may be of etymological imoprtance because of its Indian origin. Why I feel it would be because English words that have foreign origin fall into either of these categories:

 • They are derived from local language and make it to English language.
 • Their usage is restricted to a particular phenomenon in a particular country
 • They are euphemisms, made for the culture specific.

Now, this word does not belong to any of these. It is derived from Disc Jockey (a common English phrase), it is quite general and yet is restricted to one country, and its not a euphemism. I wanted to highlight this wierdness by placing it under suitable category, fo which I asked for help. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 05:07, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note to say I feel that I tried to bring you into a trivial argument that was probably a waste of your time.

And I'm sorry about some of the things that I said, that now seem a little out of line.

It wasn't a offensive entry. I was just talking hypothetically. But does it matter how important it is. I know they're trying to build a comprehensive encyclopedia, but i think things of little importance are still important. As long as the entry is neutral and inoffensive then why should they delete it?

Help (David Quinn)

Not to continue to beat a dead horse, but the same anonymous user 71.197.148.37 is once again reverting all of my changes to the Quinn article without even putting the word revert in the edit history.

You and several other admins advised me against doing exactly the same thing.

If you look at the history of the article, my last edits have not been reverts, but additions of dates, and sources, deletion of original research, deletion of material lacking any readily verifiable source and minor grammar cleanups.

I have explained each one of my edits on the discussion page, so that this user and others would have the opportunity to discuss what they objected to about my edits.

My last edit was to redo all of my work, and I did put the word revert in the edit history.

TheRingess 00:05, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help on monbook and thanks for responding to my requests for help on the Quinn article.

I don't know why I care about that article, but it kind of bugs me when a group of users want to simply revert an article over and over and don't seem to want to discuss the specific issues they have with a fellow editors changes.

I also restored some of my talk page that I had deleted in anger, thanks for setting me on the straight and narrow in regards to that.

TheRingess 00:24, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Once more this user at the anonymous ip address wishes to revert all of my changes without any discussion.

the newest reason given is basically "my version is better than yours"

I am sorry to keep bugging you. Perhaps I will have to request arbitration.

I was hoping to get them to talk to me (I know I may have messed up that possibility by reverting changes without placing revert in myself, and reverting changes on my talk page) before I requested arbitration. But I do believe that I am attempting in good faith, to improve my own involvement in this ongoing dispute.

Am I wrong, is "my version is better than yours" a good excuse to revert all of a fellow editors changes?

TheRingess 02:30, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This anonymous use has now reverted the material a 4th time in less than 24 hours. I have already reverted 3 times, since I feel that none of my edits were out of line with Wikipedia's policies. I am not going to revert the article a 4th time, I do not wish to be banned.

TheRingess 02:37, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hate to do this again. The anonymous user has once again reverted everything. The explanation is "rev to personally verified version."

Sigh...I was hoping to discuss this with these guys. I think I'm going to need to request arbitration.

Take care.

Do you think Ringess is going to give up? As one of the more tired peons, I sure hope he does. Where is the "notability" in the Havant & Waterlooville F.C. entry? Totally of subject but they're not very important , but there is still a notable amount of info on them. They have never won anything or done anything special and I cant see why anyone would look them up (nothing against H & W they're my most local team) I'm only using H & W as an example by the way. Dont get me wrong I think it's brilliant that this encyclopedia is so in depth. Please give your comments as I believe that the encyclopedia could only benefit from entrys such as mine. Unimportant it may be, but what have thay got to lose?

The whole reason this started was when I noticed him calling people idiots in some of his edit summeries. I asked him to stop, as I believed he was disrupting the community. I posted a message on his talk page in which I misspelled "personal". Now, he's attacking me because of that one, and one other, typo. You can find a more detailed view on his talk page. Malplacement redux

New report done, less than half as long this time around. A quick eyeball analysis indicates that you need to have a chat with the tropical cyclone guys. Bo Lindbergh 08:04, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hurricane disambig

Why do you want to get rid of hurricane disambig? This is a very useful template and I will resist removing it unless you have a good reason. Forcing editors to add a separate category and template is simply unnecessary. — jdorje (talk) 23:58, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help Me Commander Keane

Hello Commander. I left the following messages on the disambiguation page. I know you like to disambiguate. Would you like to help with this? Best regards --Lawnmowerman 18:08, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

5 March 2006 #2 Help request Someone may want to check my additions to the disabiguation page for Crawford --Lawnmowerman 03:44, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 5 March 2006 #1 Help request Am a new contributor. Am trying to disambiguate references to Crawford Castle. I wrote the article on Crawford Castle, however, there is a ship named Crawford Castle referred to in a Henry Blogg and another building named Crawford Castle in the Spetisbury article. Thanks (Lawnmowerman 03:31, 6 March 2006 (UTC))

Black Hawk Down?

Hi. Your very handy Black Hawk disambiguation page has been removed by another user - I want to add another relevant entry but the whole area area has devolved into a series of redircts and empty entries. I don't know the reason the page was removed but would it be possible to bring it back in it's right form somewhere? Thanks for your efforts and help. (Emperor 02:39, 7 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]

I had things to add so I brought it back but if that wasn't right then feel free to do whatever needs doing (Emperor 04:25, 7 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Denys Rayner

Dear Commander Keane Is this the right place to seek more assistance? I am getting much pleasure from Wikipedia, though I may feel differently if I discover in future weeks or months that some of my work has been seriously edited. I'll wait until that happens and try to stay cool. So long as I feel I am learning and not getting into an adversarial debate in which one particpant is refusing to engage with the other. The main reason I wanted your help was to ask why my article on the naval veteran, writer and boat designer, Denys Rayner, does not appear when I search for, say, "Wikipedia Denys Rayner" on Google whereas other Wiki articles can be found that way. Can you look over my entry on Denys and suggest ways I could improve formatting and style? What is good and bad about it?. Many thanks in advance. Working on the Denys Rayner article has been an amazing lesson in web research. He was a friend of mine many years ago and taught me how to sail, but I did not know as much as I've learned in just a few hours work - including a photo of the U-Boat captain who sank him in 1944. Dear Commander Keane

Can you help me with the "copyright" designation of the photo portrait I have inserted of the subject. You will see from my comment on this that it was a photo that Denys Rayner gave me in 1966, but it has also been used in one of his book, Escort.Sibadd 01:09, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Googling for Denys Rayner

Is there any way i can make it more likely that if I put "Denys Rayner" into Google, or indeed "Denys Rayner Wikipedia" I will actually find the article on Denys Rayner. Why is it that the only way i can go to this article is by bookmarking its URL or by going to a better known site - like 'The Cruel Sea' - and using the link there to Denys Rayner. Hey

I'm in one of the CS labs, wiki-ing it up! Too bad I cant get IRC to work through the proxy server... yet to try HTTP tunneling. --Spook (my talk | my contribs) 05:03, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Superfluous disambiguation link.

I seem to have a few of those listed. They are however mistakes, since I can't see why I would have made them. But I'll take care of them right away. Thanks for pointing it out. ---Marcus- 07:21, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK i've fixed all that could be fixed on the list. I corrected the redirects, and after nothing linked to the old disambiguation page, i put it up for speedy deletion with reasoning: This page is a malplaced disambiguation page. It has been moved into an article with the same name -(disambiguation). Can I assist in the moving process? Or do you need administrative powers for that? ---Marcus- 08:09, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Some pages were unfortunately deleted already, but i'll remove the tag from as many as I can and replace with redirects.---Marcus- 08:18, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems the problem was fixed via WP:RM in early February. I usually check WP:RM, but must have overlooked this one, or else I would have removed the request myself. Thanks for the notice! Kusma (討論) 12:51, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello-

Yes, that's exactly what I mean--I just would like the address hidden or to have user name replaced since I didn't realize posting an edit would post the IP address unless I signed up for an account. I don't want to expose this address publicly since it is not mine. Would be greatly appreciated it you could fix per your previous talk? Thanks in advance! Moving disambiguation pages

In order to use the template

it requires that the article Hayward (disambiguation) to exist.
If you use it such as

it fails. I was doing what I thought was required to apply the otherpeople, otheruse and otherplace templates. HJKeats 02:43, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You will have to examine the actual text of this message to see what it is exactly I'm referring to Template:Command. Sorry not the most articulate way of explaining the issue. HJKeats 02:53, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Would you be able to direct me as to which is correct way to apply the disambiguation template? I have noticed that you have been busy moving the pages back to remove the (disambiguation) title from the article. How will that affect the use of the otherpeople, otheruse and otherplace templates? Thank you in advance for your response. HJKeats 21:01, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, strange that this item would be removed from your talk page by an anonymous IP 151.207.240.4 without explanation. I have put it back again, hopefully with your approval. Please if you could give some insight to the questions I ask, it would be greatly appreciated. HJKeats 11:02, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm still not clear on your suggestions. If I create another article let's say with connotation of Hayward as the title and I apply the otheruse, otherpeople or otherpersons and otherplace templates, it requires that (disambiguation) be in the title. If it doesn't exist it will simply fail to redirect to the appropriate disambiguation article page, unless the (disambiguation) is in the originating article title. Take a look at the main article Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Disambiguation links where it uses those templates with examples that require (disambiguation) in the title. HJKeats 11:48, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I really appreciate your help, thanks for taking the time to educated me on the finer points of disambiguation. If I were to create an article for John Smith (ordinary man) and use the otherpeople or otherpersons template at the beginning of his article, it will require that the article must exist (or a redirect to it) John Smith (disambiguation). Take for example, I have created the article for Carolyn Hayward and if I were to include the template in the article it would land on Hayward (disambiguation) but were it is now changed back to Hayward it must get redirected to Hayward. HJKeats 12:19, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Again, thanks for taking the time with me on this topic as I see it, this may become a major problem later on when many people of the same name does warrant an article in Wikipedia. I found it very interesting when coming upon the word Hayward and its many uses, places, profession, first name and as a surname. It certainly adds depth to Wikipedia when researching a topic. You will find that for many people with same name such as Paul O'Neill, it does a poor job of identifying that there are others in Wikipedia that you will never know of unless a disambiguation page does exist. These are just some of my thoughts on the topic. When I came across the templates it became a eureka moment for me as it broaden the research ability and it made for a much cleaner and uniform reference tool when it came to another reference of a same or similar name. I shall refrain from using the templates (otherpeople, otherpersons, otheruses, otherplaces) in future, thanks again for your assistance in this matter. HJKeats 13:40, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for taking up so much time on this topic. As a side note it would seem that the rule isn't applied consistently as Bach (as used in the example at Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Disambiguation links still continues to have a disambiguation page Bach (disambiguation), I would imagine that Hayward should receive same handling. HJKeats 13:59, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FAQ move

I noticed your splitting up of the Questions page. When it was created, all the links to FAQ were changed to point to Questions. I've changed the major ones (the one on the FAQ template itself, and the Help page) to point to Wikipedia:FAQ, but there are undoubtedly more. Just thought you'd like to know. --Go for it! 14:49, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. I'm not too bothered about it, since there is a link to the FAQ right there at the top of the page. If you know who put the FAQ content on the same page and then changed all the links you can ask them to fix it. It was a terrible idea.--Commander Keane 15:19, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But being the one who reverted, shouldn't you complete the task? And being an administrator, shouldn't you be taking on mop and bucket chores like this, rather than creating them for someone else to do? I just find the above response surprising, coming from an admin. Just my 2 cents. --Go for it! 15:32, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have gone through and done them. Being the one who reverted I probably should have fixed up the redirects. But they weren't vital, and being an administrator I am busy with other things ;). --Commander Keane 16:04, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nicely done. You've restored my faith in admins!  ;-) --Go for it! 16:21, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Malplaced disambig pages

Thanks for your comment re: the above. I've come across this line of thinking before, and understand that it has community acceptance, however despite having read the page you referred me to, and the explanation page it links to (twice), I'm still a little lost as to the problems that the Foogle->Foogle(disambiguation) method can cause. Can you explain? SP-KP 23:04, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
