Fort Phoenix State Reservation

Minutes from downtown New Bedford, Massachusetts, Fort Phoenix State Reservation combines historic features, scenic views, and a variety of recreational facilities for public use. As one of the smaller state reservations, it only contains about a half-mile of Buzzards Bay beachfront and swimming area. The park features tennis courts, basketball courts, outdoor showers and restrooms, and even a sand volleyball court. Directly adjacent to the park (and managed by the Town of Fairhaven, Massachusetts) is Fort Phoenix, a Revolutionary War Fort and national landmark. From the ramparts remnants, one can gaze across the bay where the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought, to the rolling meadows of the Elizabeth Islands. Fort Phoenix State Reservation is managed and maintained by Massachusetts' Department of Conservation and Recreation [1] (DCR).
