Beanibazar (Template:Lang-bn) is an Upazila of Sylhet District in the Division of Sylhet, Bangladesh.

History

The name "Beanibazar", correct spelling is 'Bihani Bazaar' which means "morning market". In the past, Beanibazar was surrounded mostly by jungles with many tigers that attacked people regularly at night. They made it almost impossible for the residents to go the bazaar after dusk to buy or sell daily necessary items. For this reason most of the shopping activities was held in the morning and hence the name Beanibazar.Previously, Beanibazar was called "Pancha Khanda" which means "Five Parts". Beanibazar is one of the upazilas in Sylhet which has the largest numbers of expatriates living in the United Kingdom , United States , Canada , Saudi Arabia, U.A.E, Kuwait, Bahrain, and some other parts of the Middle East.

Geography

Beanibazar is located at 24°49′30″N 92°09′45″E / 24.8250°N 92.1625°E / 24.8250; 92.1625. It has 27,089 units of household and a total area of 253.22 km².

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Beanibazar had a population of 181,547, 49.5% of whom are male and 50.5% are female. 89,317 (or 49.2%) of the population are over the age of 18.

Beanibazar has an average literacy rate of 37.4% (7+ years) compared to the national average of 32.4%.[1] Religions: Muslim 95.66%, Hindu 4.31%, and others 0.03%
