Thanks and a question

Hello BQ. Thank you for blocking 75.144.36.137 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). I was placing a warning on their page while you were doing this and I came across something that I had not seen before. They have a bot that is archiving their talk page. That requires someone to go into the archives to see the long history of warnings. As I type this I realize that there isn't anything particularly wrong with it as it doesn't violate any guidelines but it still seems odd and I wonder if you have encountered it before. Thanks for your time and for your work as an admin here at WikiP. MarnetteD | Talk 15:36, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't really strike me as something odd. I think I've seen such a practice several times before. --BorgQueen (talk) 16:41, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. I guess it shows that no matter how long you edit here there is always something new to discover. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 16:44, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

Dear BorgQueen,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 16:13, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Justicejayant

Hi there. Justicejayant (talk · contribs · logs) contacted me via email and asked me to review his recent block. I told him I would look into it. May I asked why his talk page was locked down? It's my understanding that users may remove or archive talk page comments at their discretion. I think it would be better if he had his talk page as a venue to discuss his block or request an unblock. --Laser brain (talk) 20:23, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding is a serial blocked user is not supposed to blank his talk page because it gives a wrong impression to other users that he has never been warned and never had any problems. If he was honestly going to discuss his block on the talk page he wouldn't have blanked it as soon as he was blocked. --BorgQueen (talk) 07:08, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point. I do think we need to allow him an avenue to discuss his block. Can we unlock his talk page with a request that he not blank the warnings in place? --Laser brain (talk) 13:45, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, you are welcome to alter the current block, but if you do, I would like to ask you to keep an eye on the user. --BorgQueen (talk) 14:29, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ITN Orbit Tower

Hi BorgQueen. I've been working on the Orbit Tower nomination on ITN/C - I was just wondering whether you could provide your opinion on whether enough consensus is reached there (it's a minority topic) or not yet... Thanks! Khuft (talk) 19:32, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BorgQueen
Yes, I did in fact check the article you mention. The issue is Gemstone Treatment has evolved significantly over the last several years. As I am sure you noted, the references quoted on that wiki are significantly aged. In fact, i think the most recent reference on there is that of the US Nuclear Reg commission - in 2008! (and government bodies tend to lag new technology significantly)...also irradiation is but one form of treatment..
In the end, there is no substitute for GIA qualified experts with experience in the industry. Primarily due to the fact that as long as gemstones are precious, there will always be someone trying to mimic a precious stone in any way possible..which is part of the reason i used an online source, and I used a site with no ads and no sales.

Question about ITN

I always thought that new things being posted get posted to the top of it. Is that not true? SilverserenC 01:48, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on what you mean by "new things". The item I just posted happened on 20 Aug, therefore it should be posted under the 21 Aug items. --BorgQueen (talk) 01:52, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. What would happen if two things were posted at the same time, one from the current day so it's nearer the top and another from an older day, so it's the last one on the list, but the inclusion of the former one would automatically push it off the list? Then it would not have been up at all, even though the consensus was for it to be posted. SilverserenC 02:09, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would personally leave the older one for at least 12 hours. But I've seen other admins rejecting noms only because they became too old. --BorgQueen (talk) 02:54, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If so then what about events which happen in the same day? Do you get to choose which one you like more or does the newer one goes up? I'm asking because my question above was not answered. Rajab and Assange stories were nominated the same day (Assange first). Assange's was posted first, yet when you posted Rajab's, it was the second story. Mohamed CJ (talk) 02:31, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, so I fixed. Do you really have to bother a busy admin with these trivial things, when you can check the history to see that it has been corrected? --BorgQueen (talk) 02:54, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My bad. I had checked the history, but didn't notice the change. Mohamed CJ (talk) 02:58, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Generally, it the event that occurs first that fgoes higher up. Not by nomination. Ive seen later nomination go below (which means they last less time on the main apge)Lihaas (talk) 10:16, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know he did, and I see no reason why he can't, as long as it is reasonably accurate. I did read the discussion and found that consensus clearly supports the item. Please notice that, after posting, another user has stated his support as well. --BorgQueen (talk) 05:50, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Wikipedia policy and my opinions thereof

I don't have any problem with any person contributing to a discussion, per se, but Wikipedia policy, as established by consensus, holds that users should not create a secondary account to contribute to discussions on policy. See WP:SOCK which explains that in fairly unambiguous language. If the policy did not exist, then I would not have raised any objections. In other words, the main source of your objection should be the existance of that line at WP:SOCK, and it is vitally important that you work on getting that line removed. Insofar as the policy is there, and insofar as it appears that it has the weight of the community consensus supporting it, I don't see where I did anything wrong in noting the existance of that policy. In simple terms, change the policy if you don't want people to refer to it, don't complain when people refer to unambiguous policies and when they are clearly broken. --Jayron32 16:38, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

1. What you did wasn't simply pointing out to the policy. Your tone was rather sarcastic, in particular you totally ignored the user's reasonably well-written rationale and instead was suspicious immediately that the user seemed (to you) too familiar with "arcane" (whatever you specifically meant by it) terms of Wikipedia for a new user. I don't think that was constructive.
2. What makes you conclude that it has to be a secondary account? Have you considered the possibility that the user in question might have been an IP user who had been browsing Wikipedia for a while and decided to create an account to state his/her opinion? Had they participated as an IP, you or someone might have quoted the following: Editing logged out in order to mislead: Editing under multiple IP addresses may be treated the same as editing under multiple accounts where it is done deceptively or otherwise violates the above principles. Where editors log out by mistake, they may wish to contact an editor with oversight access to ensure there is no misunderstanding. (from Wikipedia:SOCK#Inappropriate_uses_of_alternative_accounts)
3. The policy section you have quoted states in the very beginning: Editors must not use alternative accounts to mislead, deceive, disrupt, or undermine consensus. I don't see any proof that the new user has stated his/her opinion to "mislead, deceive, disrupt, or undermine consensus". If there was any user that was being disruptive, I think it was someone else. --BorgQueen (talk) 17:08, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, you're correct on that. I probably could have been (strike that, should have been) more tactful. Handling it as I did was a bad idea, and you were correct to call me on that. Thank you for setting me straight on that. It is useful to have one's toes kept to the fire by others, and I thank you for bringing this up. I was in the wrong, and you were right to note it. --Jayron32 17:39, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification needed

Hello! Please see Wikipedia talk:In the news#Option D: Only the most recent blurb should have an image. Thanks! —David Levy 22:01, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry David, I can't really focus on the issue since I am being distracted in real life. Can you please summarize here why suddenly my short one-sentence comment has become a subject of debate? Thanks. --BorgQueen (talk) 22:13, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, this pertains to option D's wording.
Kevin McE has interpreted "the most recent blurb" as a requirement to begin sorting same-date events by their exact times (and if "the most recent" one occurred an hour later than another one did, only it would be eligible for illustration).
Conversely, given that idea's impracticality and irrelevance to the issue under discussion, I assume that you meant "a blurb with the most recent date" (with the understanding that we would continue placing the illustrated item above others with the same date). —David Levy 22:31, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What does it have to do with me? I am not the one who wrote option D. --BorgQueen (talk) 22:49, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yikes! I somehow confused you with Jayron32 (and believed that you initiated the straw poll). I apologize for the error and the inconvenience caused. —David Levy 23:17, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Kevin McE has interpreted "the most recent blurb" as a requirement to begin sorting same-date events by their exact times (and if "the most recent" one occurred an hour later than another one did, only it would be eligible for illustration).
No: I interpreted "chronological" as meaning "in order of time". Kevin McE (talk) 10:16, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Those two statements aren't mutually exclusive. Feel free to cite any specific inaccuracies in mine. (But please do it on my talk page or yours, as BorgQueen already has been inconvenienced by my error.) —David Levy 13:46, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Recent Deaths

Hi. I am rather frustrated. The suggestion to institute a "recent deaths" ticker has been discussed three times on ITN/Talk. Once informally, now archived. And a second and third time with a formal RfC and even an entirely redundant question after the RfC as to whether its conclusion should be implemented. All three questions showed a strong consensus in favor of the change. Please let me know what else needs to be done, assuming you or someone else cannot simply implement it now. If you can and will implement it yourself, please consider doing so with the recently archived Peter Lougheed nomination, although that may also merit a full listing at ITN. I will watch here. Thanks. μηδείς (talk) 04:54, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
