Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 122.106.177.130 (talk) at 00:56, 17 October 2012 (Calder Hall not Sellafield). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 02:19 on 11 June 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Taliban?

The main article on the girl points to Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi instead. I'm not really sure which of the three pages should be linked to. - TexasAndroid (talk) 21:48, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The distinction between groups referred to as the "Taliban" appears to be so unclear, fuzzy, and overlapping, that I really have no clue what the best target for that is. --Floquenbeam (talk) 03:35, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's totally the wrong target, suggesting she was shot by an Afghan rather than domestic Pakistani group. It's the top item in ITN, and hence has sat at the top of today's Wikipedia main page all day here, yet contains a glaring error and piece of misinformation that no one seems willing to sort out. N-HH talk/edits 22:52, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is this a new wikipedia standard, contrary from the "no information is better than the wrong information," wikipedia now goes with "any link is better than no link?" If it is wrong, it should not be linked. The main page is so intransigent, nothing will compel anyone to correct something that is wrong, if it is on the main page, argue, personally attack, defend, but correct, no way! if it is on the main page. That is what vandals should target now: articles that go on the main page, the surest way to embarrass wikipedia, because it will guarantee the error stays in the article. -Fjozk (talk) 00:51, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in today's or tomorrow's On this day...

The nuclear power station opened by the Queen on this day was Calder Hall. The name Sellafield was retroactively applied. It's use in this context is anachronistic - see http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/october/17/newsid_3147000/3147145.stm 122.106.177.130 (talk) 00:56, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
