Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 68.107.131.23 (talk) at 06:45, 9 December 2012 (→‎Errors in the current or next Did you know...: This needs removed from the front page.). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 07:27 on 6 August 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in the summary of today's or tomorrow's featured article

The summary for "Imagine" states that the song has a message of "collectivist positivism". Do you mean optimism? 'Cause I don't think that song says anything about positivism. Chubbles (talk) 02:56, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See article talk-- no indication from the sources that positivism was the intended word, looks like a glaring error that was introduced after the blurb was written and the article scheduled. The source (apparently not in the article) said "concept of positive prayer" per what is posted on talk. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:17, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've changed it per the main article. Graham87 —Preceding undated comment added 04:58, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in In the news

Template:ITN-Update Dave Brubeck (pictured), whose 1959 Time Out was the first jazz platinum album, dies at the age of 91. (emphasis mine) - this reads oddly to me somehow, probably the lack of the word "album". Understandable given it's used later in the sentence but surely there's a way to rephrase this so it doesn't read so ... bizarrely. — foxj 22:24, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the name of the album altogether since I didn't think it was necessary and I couldn't think of a way to keep it and still remove the awkwardness. -- tariqabjotu 11:21, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers. — foxj 12:45, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"jazz platinum album" is unspecific, as most countries have some form of Music recording sales certification. Need to specify either American or RIAA. -Halo (talk) 17:33, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Brubeck's Time Out was not the first jazz album to be certified platinum by the RIAA. Both Heavy Weather and Head Hunters were certified platinum prior to Time Out. An editor on the talk page for the Brubeck album states that both Heavy Weather and Head Hunters are "fusion albums, which is a controversial style to jazz purists who dont think it's actual jazz..." I'm sorry, but to quote Miles Davis, so what? Which "jazz purists?" This is a weasel word definition - look for Weather Report or Herbie Hancock in a record store or on-line, and all of their work is filed under jazz; all of the books and writers who analyze said work of jazz fusion speak of it within the continuum of jazz history. It's not controversial at all, actually. The Brubeck album is not the first jazz album to certified platinum by the RIAA, and the statement that it is must be removed as soon as possible. Unless, of course, Wikipedia wants to cultivate the habit of being irrefutably wrong on its front page. PJtP (talk) 02:02, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I've removed this point altogether now. -- tariqabjotu 04:48, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in the current or next Did you know...

This DYK quote is linked to the article Intraplate deformation, an article that says nothing about melting ice caps, and doesn't really say much about intraplate deformation either.

"that tectonic plates in the Earth's crust are not completely rigid but can be deformed by the melting of an ice cap?"

Am I missing something? Maybe you linked to the wrong article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.107.131.23 (talk) 03:41, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure why it was removed, but this earlier version mentions glacial activity. Chris857 (talk) 03:52, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I see this, where the author changed the isostatic rebound information to a discussion about the NMFZ that contians none of the information he added to the article. Anyone want to try for an accurate article or just remove this one from the front page until it can be written? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.107.131.23 (talk) 04:15, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is this page just the round file? This article does not mention what the main page says; and it is still on the main page. The article's authors did not correctly synthesize the information from their sources, so just making the old version is not good enough. This needs removed from the front page.

Errors in today's or tomorrow's On this day...

1854 -- Feast of the Immaculate Conception: should say she was conceived (not born) free from original sin. And it's always the Immaculate Conception -- we're missing a "the" after "proclaimed the dogmatic definition of ...". --108.45.72.196 (talk) 07:13, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding the "the" in the right place. Can we also make the more important correction? It should say she was conceived (not born) free from original sin. See Immaculate Conception. Hint: Conception! --108.45.72.196 (talk) 15:54, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
