Discussion

Anybody interested in having another event for the 2013 Great American Wiknic? Most of the events are on June 22, and that works for me. Minnehaha Falls should work (though we should figure out a better place), but any more ideas for locations etc? —innotata 19:12, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If I can fit it into a work schedule, I'd be interested in finally getting out to MN for a meetup. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 19:44, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. Thanks for planning ahead. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 02:50, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like my daughter's sports will be taking me away from the Metro that weekend. Too bad. The last wiknic was fun. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 16:12, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
since I finally have a DL, and Metro Trasit should reach out there, i'll see what I can do to show up! minnehaha is a great location for any picnic, been there before, good access, great scenery, etc..... -- Aunva6talk - contribs 03:16, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! Innotata, this date will work and the Blue Line goes right there. -SusanLesch (talk) 14:12, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, we'd better do it at Minnehaha again. I just hope we can find each other this time, bring a bigger sign I guess. (The only reservable spots are at Wabun, and are not worthwhile, so we can't fix a spot.)
Should we talk about bringing food to share? —innotata 15:18, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You have more experience with this venue but I can bring food or whatever. Will check back later in June. -SusanLesch (talk) 14:30, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
How many people to plan for? Can we drink beer or wine in a public park? -SusanLesch (talk) 17:58, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This sounds like fun. --Mattwj2002 (talk) 08:03, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I'd check how many people have signed up a few days before, then add a few for the maybes and people who don't sign up. I can bring some food too, do you want to post your plans? You're not supposed to bring alcohol into Minneapolis parks. —innotata 13:33, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually you can. I can bring enough 3.2 cans for everybody. Still working out food but it will be take out, from The Wedge or Surdyk's. What are you bringing? -SusanLesch (talk) 14:30, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What are the plans for the event? I just got the new wikimedia-commons app! I would love to contribute to the Commons somehow during the event. This will be my first wikimedia meetup of any kind. :) --Mattwj2002 (talk) 01:28, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, is there any dish I could bring? How do you want to work food? --Mattwj2002 (talk) 01:30, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This sounds like a ton of fun! I might have to come! -Mark — Preceding unsigned comment added by 170.135.112.14 (talk) 13:00, 18 June 2013
I'd say if you plan to be hungry, plan to bring something to eat. Unless somebody tells me not to, I am planning to bring two 6-packs of 3.2 beer, one 6-pack of Diet Coke, a quart of chicken or pasta salad, and some paper plates and forks. -SusanLesch (talk) 20:58, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks SusanLesch, I'll bring some food. I really want to get a video of the waterfall on Saturday if I can! :) My phone records in 720p! :D --Mattwj2002 (talk) 03:29, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great plan! And the falls should be full of rain by then. Innotata, can you possibly give us precise directions on where to meet? -SusanLesch (talk) 12:19, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, we can't be sure, I'll find a spot just before noon, to the north of the creek. I'm not sure I'll have time to grab food to share, but I'd like to bring something. —innotata 04:14, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was just thinking about some deli sliced meat, cheese, and some bread. Some chips might be nice too! --Mattwj2002 (talk) 07:33, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, guys. I'll find you north of the creek slightly after noon. The falls will really be running! -SusanLesch (talk) 15:07, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be wearing a blue polo shirt and cargo pants! See you then! :) --Mattwj2002 (talk) 13:45, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There's a huge power outage here (hence I am editing from my phonne and can't put this below), but apparently at least one of you csn still come. I will be there unless there is a hugr storm, but probably only with a letter size sign and without enough food to share. —innotata 15:12, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How long will the Wiknic be going on? Is it really from 12:00 to 4:00 or will it be ending early? Since it seems there will only be a few people I figured you guys might cut it short... Megakacktus (talk) 16:51, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone here I am? --Mattwj2002 (talk) 17:07, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Here are my Wikimedia's Contributions. At the time of posting this, the last 10 uploads were from this meetup. :) --Mattwj2002 (talk) 07:42, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Matt, I took the liberty of adding one of your videos to the "Parks and recreation" section of Minneapolis. Thanks a million. It came out great! -SusanLesch (talk) 17:31, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
SusanLesch - Thanks for using my video. Nothing like improving Wikipedia and the Commons at the same time. :) --Mattwj2002 (talk) 22:50, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Spring Editathon at MHS

Just to let people know, at the the recent events editors and Mhsrc and others from the Minnesota Historical Society been discussing having an editathon at the Minnesota History Center library, during the next month (possibly March 16). It might be good to start discussing an agenda; the editathon part won't be so easy to organise as the Special Collections events, since the library isn't based on topic files. Mcghiever and I are both interested in running a suggested more formal introduction to Wikipedia. —innotata 19:07, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We at MNopedia and the Minnesota Historical Society are still very excited about having an editathon in 2013. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like March won't work after all. March is a busy time of year behind the scenes, and an editathon requires a lot of coordination with different departments. Fall 2013 is looking better. We hope you'll still be interested and available then. Mhsrc (talk) 22:17, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Where do I go to get rid of this notice?

I've hidden it several times. I thought I had my preferences set up to not show these in the first place. Is there a box to check or a bit of code to cut/paste so I don't have to be invited to something that I have absolutely no interest in several times a day? --OnoremDil 19:40, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK...so it's today. Hopefully that means the header will be gone for everyone by tomorrow. I'd still like an answer to avoid the annoyance next year. --OnoremDil 19:43, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Onorem. I haven't tried this out, but according to Wikipedia:Geonotice you can permanently hide notices by adding ".geonotice { display: none; }" to your CSS file. Cheers, Gobōnobō + c 05:34, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More frequent events?

I've been thinking for a while of having more frequent meetup events, perhaps monthly. With more small events, more Wikipedians can come to some of them. I'd like to have more in-person editing events, given how enjoyable an productive the editathons at Minneapolis Central Library were like. We'll also be able to point people interested in Wikipedia to something regular they can go to.

The main problem is finding a time and convenient place to meet. If we want to have public computers available and a good space, I think that limits us to a few library locations. The people at Special Collections at Minneapolis Central who organised the past events are interested, but they are only open weekdays and first and third Saturdays. I'm not certain I can make any of these days in April or May myself. Any ideas for other locations for these events, and anyone else interested in organising them?

Generally, any thoughts or ideas? —innotata 22:52, 4 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I like this idea. I don't know whether there would be much interest in this from non-Wikipedians or regular editors, but I think it would be worthwhile even if participation was low. I could make time to be at a library once a month. Gobōnobō + c 22:08, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Why don't you set a time, among April 6, May 4, and May 18, and the let the librarians know? April 20 doesn't work for them; I may come on the May dates and I can put out messages on Wikipedia. —innotata 04:03, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this is a good idea, just like participating in the Wiknic. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 02:51, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Let's try this out. I suggest 1 June and 6 July, at Minneapolis Central. The Special Collections librarians expect any Saturdays they are open this summer will work, May and 3 August won't work for me. Once we pick exact dates and times (they're open 10-4:30, how about 12:30 to 2:30 + however long we want to stick around?) they can be put on the library calendar. —innotata 05:11, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds feasible. I'll keep an eye on the schedule of my children's activities and try to get this on my calendar. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 02:29, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've been active on WP for a while but have never attended one of these editing events. I will try to make at least one this summer if specific times can get locked down. :) Ruby 2010/2013 02:27, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can make it mebbe a few times in the summer... college is too far away for the school year.... -- Aunva6talk - contribs 03:18, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've said we'll do the dates June 1 and July 6, 12:30-2:30 (and those interested can come early and/or stick around, Special Collections closes at 4:30 and the library at 5:00 or something). If anyone wants to look at materials in the library, or subjects in the Minneapolis Collection, it's easier if you let the librarians know in advance. I'll add proper listings of the event later. —innotata 00:30, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'd love to come, and I believe I'll be able to. I'm rather new to WP myself and would love to meet more experienced editors. Megakacktus (talk) 17:49, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I should be able to attend today (6 July 2013). See you there. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 12:44, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

June and July Meet-Ups

I will not be able to attend the either of these events, as I have a a coffee shop that I have to tend to during this time. However, if the group wishes to meet-up at my shop on these dates, I would be open for that. I also have free wifi. The name of the coffee shop is the Lavvu Coffee House, 813 4th Street Southeast, Minneapolis - 612-331-4136

Dinkytown talk 14:56, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The events should be on the library calendar, so we can't relocate them (also, they have public computers and the collections). However, looks like a nice place and I'll keep it in mind for other events if you're interested, thanks for letting us know. —innotata 20:58, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Minnesota User Group

I'd like to encourage folks to look at the possibility of an informal Wikimedia User Group for Minnesota editors, which should make it easier to get Wikimedia Foundation grant funding for outreach events, and could even lead to an eventual nonprofit chapter like Wikimedia DC. The Wikimedia US Coalition would be more than glad to help you along this process!--Pharos (talk) 14:00, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
