Fawad Afzal Khan (Urdu: فواد خان; pronounced fəʋaːd̪ xaːn; born 29 November 1981) is a Pakistani singer, model and actor who appears in Pakistani films and serials. Khan rose to prominence playing the role of Hassan in 2010 serial Dastaan for which he won Pakistan Media Award for Best Actor. Since then he has starred in a number of Pakistani serials, notably Akbari Asghari, Kuch Pyar Ka Pagalpan, Humsafar for which he won Lux Style Awards for Best Actor in 2013, Ashk, Zindagi Gulzar Hai and Numm, where he played the titular character.
Khan made his film debut in 2007 with Shoaib Mansoor's Khuda Kay Liye which was the highest-grossing Pakistani film of 2007. Khan went on to win the Lux Style Award for Best Actor. In 2013 Khan appeared in Abdullah Kadwani's Armaan, which earned him Tarang Housefull Award for Best On screen Couple with Aamina Sheikh.
Khan was first known for being the lead singer of Pakistani rock band Entity Paradigm, but the band split up due to life commitments. His songs "Shor Macha and "Rahguzar" did well in the charts, and was considered a critical and commercial success.
Early life
Fawad Afzal Khan was born in Lahore, Pakistan.[1] He spent his early life in Greece,[2]Saudi Arabia and in United Kingdom[2] and returned to Lahore when he was 12. He completed his A-levels from Lahore Grammar School. Later he joined National University of Computer & Emerging Sciences, Lahore for his Bachelors. Where he obtained a degree in Telecom Engineering. He made his first public appearance in a high school play.Fawads performance in the play was so good that Anjum Shahzad (director) got impressed and encouraged Fawad to perform on TV as well. He learned guitar, bass, and drums at the age of 20.[2]
Personal Life
Fawad met Sadaf in 1998 at the age of 17, and married her in an Islamic wedding ceremony at Lahore in 2005. The couple has a son named Ayaan Khan.
Career
Modeling career
Khan's first project as a model involved walking the ramp for Muneeb Nawaz. He then appeared in a number of advertisements, including Olper's, Pepsi and Mobilink. Khan has modeled for clothing brand Levi's Pakistan and fashion designer Ammar Belal.[citation needed]
Khan also owns a brand called Silk which is his collaboration with his wife. The brand was launched on August 18, 2012.[3]
Music career
Khan began his singing career with Pakistani rock band Entity Paradigm as a lead singer. Khan released his first album Irtiqa in 2003. The album was an overall critical and commercial success.
During the course of their career, Entity Paradigm had a good-natured rivalry with fellow rock band Noori.
In 2008, Khan wrote and sang the original soundtrack of his drama Satrangi.
In year 2010 Fawad's band, Entity Paradigm, which broke up around 2007,[4] reunited and performed Bolo Bolo in Season 3 of the popular television music series Coke Studio. Later in the year EP also released their breakthrough album Shor Macha in which the title track, with a strong patriotic message, became relatively more popular. Fawad, at the launch of the album, commented on the track, "The message is for people to stop complaining and start acting".[5]
In 2012, Khan left the band Entity Paradigm, being more popular as an actor. The following year he sung the song "Tum Kehti Ho" in his serial Zindagi Gulzar Hai. The song was originally sung by Junaid Jamshed. Tum Kehti Ho occupied the top position at the Pakistani Singles Chart for several weeks. The song was well received by critics and audiences alike.
Television debut & success (2005-present)
Khan's first public performance was in a high school play directed by a friend of his, Manal Butt. The play caught the attention of director Shahzad Anjum, who helped Khan into the media world.[6]
In 2000, Khan made his screen debut at the age of 19 in the serial Jutt and Bond, aired on Indus Vision. He played the role of Bumbling spy boy, which also starred his friend and co-band member, Ahmed Ali Butt.[7]
In year 2008, Khan appeared in Anjum Shehzad's travel and adventure drama series Satrangi. Khan portrayed the role of an engineering student who hires a mini-bus and takes his six friend to a trip around the country.[8]
In 2011, Khan landed the lead role of Hassan, in Haissam Hussain's Dastaan, based on Razia Butt's novel "Bano", aired on Hum TV. It was based on the Partition of India (and the eventual creation of Pakistan), and takes place between 1947 and 1956. Dastaan was rated as the 2nd best drama of 2010 after Dolly Ki Ayegi Baraat and Khan received much adulation and appreciation for his portrayal of Hassan.
Khan then appeared in Sarmad Khoosat's Humsafar based on Farhat Ishtiaq's novel of the same name alongside actress Mahira Khan and Naveen Waqar. Humsafar became the most watched drama in the history of Pakistan and received rating of 13.8, highest ever, for which he won Lux Style Award for Best Actor.
From 2013 onwards he played the role of Rohail in Geo TV serial Ashk opposite Neelam Muneer and Mehreen Raheel and in another blockbuster serial Zindagi Gulzar Hai aired on Hum TV, in which he played the role of Zaroon opposite Sanam Saeed. The drama received appreciation and high ratings 9.5 all around the nation.
Khan is currently seen in Geo TV serial Numm opposite Sania Saeed. Khan is playing the role of Oxford graduate Wali Bakht the youngest sibling of his family and husband of two women's, and a victim of feudals rituals.
Film Debut and breakthrough
Khan made his film debut with a leading role in the 2007 Shoaib Mansoor's Khuda Kay Liye, which was the highest-grossing Pakistani film of 2007. Khan played the Sarmad the best singers in Lahore, but later influenced by an Islamic activist and begins to practice the extremist interpretation of Islam,grows a beard and goes against music, putting pressure on his free-spirited family to comply. Those parties interpret certain verses of the Quran and Hadith to call for a ban on music and pictures. The role was first offered to Ali Zafar but due to busy schedule, Ali refused.[2]
When questioned if Khan would favor stepping into Bollywood, he said,
“I will only go for it if it Bollywood movie is based on a quality project. Otherwise, Pakistan is my first priority, and I love working for my country.[7]
In 2013, Khan appeared in Abdullah Kadwani's film Armaan, remake of Waheed Murad's Armaan (1966 film). Khan went on to win Tarang Housefull Awards for Best on screen Couple with Aamina Sheikh.
As of September 2013, Khan has several projects at various stages of production. Khan has signed his first international project, a Bollywood film Khoobsurat, remake of the 1980 film Khubsoorat, opposite Sonam Kapoor, which will be produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Boney Kapoor. The film will begin in late 2013 according to reports.[9]
Khan has also signed on to a film with legendary television director Sultana Siddiqui that will start filming in Lahore towards the end of 2013.[10]
