Dyesebel (GMA)

Mars Ravelo's Dyesebel is a 2014 Philippine fantasy-drama television series based on a famous graphic novel of the same name created by Mars Ravelo. Directed by Don M. Cuaresma and Francis E. Pasion, it is topbilled by Anne Curtis,[1][2] together with an ensemble cast.[3] The series premiered on ABS-CBN and worldwide on TFC on March 17, 2014,[4] replacing Honesto. It is the tenth television drama in the Philippines made by ABS-CBN filmed in high definition. The story follows the journey of a young mermaid named Dyesebel, as she discovers the world above the ocean and locks in a fierce love triangle.

The story has been adapted into five films and a spin-off, throughout the timeline from 1953 to 1996. Among those who took on the role in the big screen are Edna Luna (1953), Vilma Santos (1973), Alma Moreno (1978), Alice Dixson (1990),[5] and Charlene Gonzales (1996). On the other hand, Marian Rivera played the character in the 2008 TV series of the same name on GMA Network.[6] However, it is the second time where Curtis takes the role of a mermaid, after her lead role as a goddess (who can transform into a mermaid, a harpy, or a centaur) in the ABS-CBN 2008 TV series, Dyosa.[7]

Synopsis

"A young mermaid, Dyesebel, takes on a journey to trace her origins until she finds out that she is the daughter of a merman and a human. Disowned by the sea for being the child of Tino who was the prince of the sea and the human Lucia, she starts with her adventure and explores the human world where she will meet Fredo. But this journey will be marked by a realization that she is not accepted by both worlds. And as a war between man and the underworld appears imminent, Dyesebel will choose to leave those that she loves." — Official IWanTV! Synopsis [8]

The story of Dyesebel begins when an ocean-lover named Lucia (Dawn Zulueta) fell in love with Tino (Albert Martinez), a merman prince. They got married and had a beautiful baby. Lucia named the baby "Beatriz", after her mother's name. The baby is a normal human at first, but when the baby got sick, Lucia tried to bring the baby in the hospital. Apparently, when the baby's feet got wet by the sea water, it changes to a mermaid's tail. Only the magic conch-shell can turn the baby's tail back to its normal feet. Although surprised by their daughter's strange form, they promise to love their child no matter what. But in no time at all, their neighbors discovered the couple's secret. When the community is hit with a series of catastrophes, the town believes that the anomaly is caused by Dyesebel; an accusation that leads to Prinsipe Tino's death. Before her father is killed by an angry, superstitious mob, Dyesebel is taken to the ocean by him through Banak (Ai-Ai de las Alas) where she is sent into exile since her chances for survival are greater there than on land. Unknown to Lucia is that in the heart of the sea, Dyesebel's adventures and misfortunes will begin. It is within the confines of the waters that Dyesebel will lead a new life - a journey that would take her to the depths of the sea, as well as to chaos of the city.

Production

On April 2013, the Ravelo family granted ABS-CBN rights to 13 titles and/or characters created by the late novelist. The list included "Dyesebel," which aired its pilot episode on March 17, 2014. The family of graphic novelist Mars Ravelo is proud of ABS-CBN's version of "Dyesebel," based on one of the famous characters created by the acknowledged "King of Pinoy Komiks". Dreamscape head, Deo Endrinal, revealed that to make "Dyesebel" more appealing to the new generation of Filipino viewers, they decided to make changes with the approval of Ravelo family. He said that they didn't have a difficult time convincing them to approve of the changes.

Using a technique commonly practiced by advertisers, Endrinal said they went through a "brand essence" exercise to truly understand what makes "Dyesebel" click. This also played a key role in their decision to cast actress-host Anne Curtis to play the iconic mermaid. Edrinal explained that they actually had to go through a survey and Curtis was the people's choice to portray the 7th Dyesebel.[9][10]

Music

On April 14, 2014, Star Records Inc. officially released the “Dyesebel The Official Soundtrack” and is now available in physical and digital formats in various music stores. Broadway actress and The Voice of the Philippines coach Lea Salonga had her own version of the Dyesebel theme song, Tangi Kong Kailangan. According to Dreamscape head, Deo Endrinal, Salonga will also be recording the soap's theme song with ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, in addition to the one performed by Yeng Constantino. Anne Curtis said she also wanted to sing the theme song, however she's contented to have a song in the official soundtrack.[11]

Trivia

  • In the original story, Lucia is an amnesiac mermaid who turned into human, while Tino is not a merman prince but a human being instead.
  • Alice Dixson was the first Dyesebel to use the "orange-colored" fish tail, which is commonly used now. The first three Dyesebel actresses used bluish-silver fish tails much like a dolphin. In the teaser trailer of Dyesebel 2014 remake, Curtis was seen wearing pink fish tail; however, it is confirmed that she also used orange fish tail.[12]
  • Anne Curtis is the 7th official Dyesebel.[13] She is the oldest actress to play the role at age 29. Edna Luna was 19 when she played Dyesebel; Vilma Santos was also 19, while Alma Moreno was 18. The others were a little older when assigned the mermaid role: Alice Dixson was 20, Charlene Gonzales was 22, and Marian Rivera was 23.[14]
  • Albert Martinez, who played a special participation, also portrayed the character "Gildo" in the 1996 Dyesebel film.
