Liar's Dice is a 2013 Hindi, road drama film, written and directed by Geetu Mohandas. The film stars Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles.[1] The film deals with the issue of the human cost of migration to cities, through the story of young mother, living in remote village, whose husband goes missing after having left to work many months ago. The film went on to receive two National Film Awards including, Best Actress for Geetanjali Thapa and Best Cinematography for Rajeev Ravi at the 61st National Film Awards. Movie has been selected to Oscar entries of India.

The film is India's Official Entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 87th Academy Awards scheduled to take place on February 22, 2015.[2][3]

Mohandas made her debut as feature film director with the film, she had previously made short film Kelkkunndo in 2008, which received wide acclaim.[4] The film had its world premiere at the 2013 Mumbai Film Festival in October 2013, where it took part in the Indian competition section.[5] Next, it was selected for screening at the Sundance Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam.[6] It won a special jury award at Sofia International Film Festival.[7] The film is expected to have a nation-wide release in India on November 2014, distributed by PVR Director's Rare.[8]

Plot

The film is set in a village in Himachal Pradesh near the Indo-Tibetan border, where Kamala (Geetanjali Thapa) lives with her young daughter Manya (Manya Gupta). She hasn't heard from her husband Harud, who has gone to work at a construction job in far away Delhi. When she decides to go to Delhi herself to find her husband, she takes her daughter along, who in turn insists on taking her little goat along. Then she find Nawazuddin (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a army deserter who offers to help her in the journey first to Shimla and onwards to Delhi.

Cast

Production

Director Geetu Mohandas is a noted actress in Malayalam cinema. She had written the script of the film before her debut short Kelkkunndo in 2008. However she was unable to get the film finance because of unusual storyline and a relatively unknown cast. Nevertheless, due to the critical success received at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) for the short film, she managed to get a project development grant of €10,000 (around Rs.8.45 lakh now) from the IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund. Eventually the film was co-produced by Mohandas’ own production company, Unplugged, and Jar Pictures.[5]

The film was shot on a low budget using a small crew in under a month in March, 2012,[5] at the Chitkul village in Kinnaur district, Shimla, and various location in Delhi, including the Jama Masjid.[9][10] The cinematography was by Mohandas’s husband, Rajeev Ravi, who had previously shot films like Dev.D (2009) and Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) directed by Anurag Kashyap.[6]

Reception

The Variety called the film a "quietly effective debut".[4]
