ANI regarding the Australian Newspapers

Hi Pam, sorry about the ANI I started yesterday, I know it hit a sore spot for you since you are a retired librarian yourself. I just wanted to emphasize that I had no idea these kind of training events took place and the thought didn't cross my mind. I probably should have looked at the individual user pages before bringing it to ANI, but that's something I don't normally do as new users rarely have any content on their user pages. When I wrote the ANI I was careful not to accuse anyone of anything, and just state my concerns that I thought it was odd behavior and may be a problem. I hadn't come across a situation like this before and wasn't sure how to handle it, I figured it was best to inform the admins rather than ignore it. My intentions were surely not to upset anyone, and I apologize if it did. I have issued an apology to each of the users who were left ANI notices. @War wizard90: Thanks for the note, and for the notes on the novice editors' talk pages. Fortunately as brand new editors they probably didn't recognise that an ANI notice almost always means "Someone is complaining to the authorities about your editing", but it still wasn't very welcoming. WP:AGF, WP:BITE and all that. At least now you know that training sessions happen (you didn't? do you know that there are also student assignments (see Wikipedia:Education noticeboard) etc?). You say "new users rarely have any content on their user pages" but the user names you were adding to the ANI notice were all but one blue links, not red, so obviously had something there - in fact the fact that they systematically, untypically, were blue links might have alerted you? And the usename "librarytraining"? (Though if you'd never heard of training sessions I suppose that's not much of a clue). Anyway, you've learned something, the editors have been welcomed and there are a group of nicely-done articles on long-standing Australian newspapers, and perhaps many more to come if the editors have survived their first bit of WikiDramah. And I'm sure that next time you see something which seems unusual you'll dig around a bit more, perhaps quietly ask a friendly admin, on their talk page, to have a look at it, rather than rushing to ANI quite so fast. Thanks for the feedback, I'll admit that my investigation should've been better, chalk it up to a knee-jerk reaction which I now regret. I hate wiki-drama as much as the next person and when you unintentionally find yourself as the cause of it, it's no fun. I'll admit logging in to see complaints about my actions was disheartening, however, in the few short dealings I've had with you I've come to respect you as an editor and member of this community. Had it been someone else being so vocal I might have just been upset and ignored the whole thing, but since it was coming from you I took a second to reflect and decided to apologize as you had suggested. I should probably do that more often, but I hardly claim to be perfect, only to try and improve. Hello PamD,

As the editor of the article I put in on myself, I appreciate your input. I did not want to make this an autobiographical article, but as a reference to my contribution as being the designer of the Nevada State Tartan. For nearly two decades I have been designing and researching tartan and its significance in American culture. I was asked to add my name to the list of Polish Americans in Wikipedia from the Clan Wallace Worldwide of which I am a lifetime member because of my designation as the designer of the Nevada State Tartan. In creating a page with my name, I saw that nearly all of the people referenced in the List of Polish Americans had personal articles about themselves. There were also notations that citation was needed or that the name appears in red stating that there was no information on the name listed.

This is my first contribution to Wikipedia so I was sure that I was not going to make the article about myself totally correct. It really is not as important that my name is not associated with an article, but it gives my contribution credibility as a Polish American. I have several third party sources that I can site and I would really appreciate any input you have to assist me in the best way in which I can be represented.

@Ziggy Pawlowski: No-one's denying that you designed the tartan (and I tidied up the entry for the tartan in List of U.S. state tartans while looking at it). But I'm not sure that designing a state tartan is sufficient claim of WP:NOTABILITY for a Wikipedia article. I haven't time to look at all of those refs: do any of them say anything about you beyond the fact that you designed this tartan? If so, then someone else might like to create an article about you. You could add a note at Talk:Tartan to describe yourself and how you think you measure up against WP:Notability (people) or WP:CREATIVE, but it's not your job to create an article about yourself, or even to add yourself to the list of notable Polish-Americans. You say "I was asked to add my name to the list of Polish Americans in Wikipedia", but that's not how it works here. See WP:AUTO and WP:COI. If you are interested in improving the encyclopedia, please find some other articles to edit. If you are only here to promote yourself, please find another website to do so. Thanks. Hello Pam - hope all is well at your end. I've started to improve the earlier Atkinson article but can't work out how to change his date of birth in the header from 1725 to 1735 - you can tell that I'm rather rusty! The other Atkinson's dates are 1780-1843. Best wishes GT
