Malan Breton (born June 16, 1973) is a Taiwanese born, award winning fashion designer[1], award nominated TV costume designer[2],award winning director[3], photographer, actor, columnist, producer, model, dancer, & media personality based in New York. He launched his namesake label "Malan Breton" in 2005. The label, Malan Breton, is associated with men's, women's, bridal, swim, underwear, and accessories. The brand is ranked in the top 20 fashion brands in the world, for social media presence. Malan Breton is one of the top three hundred luxury brands in the world [4]


History

Breton was born in Taipei, Taiwan.[5] Breton is self-taught and never went to design school.[6] He began designing fashion at the age of eleven but grew up, as a performer, in the entertainment industry.[5] In 1996, as a model, Breton moved to New York after a request by Versus and KCD to cast for the New York fashion week Spring 1997 Collection shows at 7th on Sixth.[7] As a model, Breton was photographed by top photographers and directors Herb Ritts, Len Prince, Manuela Pavesi, Ellen von Unwerth, Michael Gondry, Hype Williams,[8][9] Thom Oliphant,[10][11] Joseph Kahn[12][13] to name a few.

Breton got his start (in fashion design) as a stylist. Some of his clients included Kylie Minogue, Celine Dion, and Linda Evangelista. As Breton worked with these stars, he eventually fell into the design world.[14] His mentors in fashion include Arnold Scaasi, Paul Cuss, Eileen Ford,[15] also noted is his training at British heritage brand Turnbull & Asser .[16] As a voice actor Malan Breton was the voice of ABC Sports, ESPN X-Games, Sothebys, Banana Republic,[17][18][19] As a dancer Breton danced with Paula Abdul, Missy Elliot, Puffy Combs, and Anne Reinking.[20] In 2001, Breton made a cameo in the film Zoolander starring Ben Stiller [21] In 2005, Breton was one of twelve new designers to watch for on the New York runway in WWD Women's Wear Dailies "Cheat Sheet".[22] In 2007 Malan Breton opened the first Malan Breton flagship store in NYC's East Village.[23] Malan Breton Collection expanded in 2008 to include Malan Breton Accessories.[24] In 2010 Malan Breton expanded to include a full line of menswear - Malan Breton Homme (Men)[25] In 2010 Malan Breton starred opposite Academy Award winner Celeste Holm in the independent feature film "College Debts" [26] In 2011 Malan Breton costumed the Neilsen Rated NBC TV game show "Minute to Win It" [27] In 2014 Malan Breton expanded into outerwear with his first license [28] In 2014 Malan Breton was noted as number twenty-six of the one hundred most popular people in entertainment, for his work in fashion, and costume, in television, to have been born in Taipei, Taiwan by IMDB.[29] In 2014 Malan Breton was ranked by ranker.com as the 24th most famous person from Taiwan for his work as a Fashion Designer, TV Producer, and Journalist.[30] In 2015 Malan Breton Traveled to his birth rite, Taiwan, to film a documentary titled "Malan Breton, A Journey to Taiwan" [31]

Philosophy and style

The label is known for simple shift dresses made in elegant materials[32] sexy, fitted evening gowns,[33] and for his slouchy pajama pants.[34] For men he designs clothing he would wear on a daily basis, Sharply tailored, slim men's suiting,[16] with a strong use of colour and texture [35] Breton is known for his colourful silk suits.[36]

Awards and nominations

In 2015 Malan Breton was awarded the 2015 NYC International Film Festival award for "Best Documentary Short Film", "Malan Breton; A Journey to Taiwan" A film Malan Breton directed, wrote, and starred in.[37][38] In 2015 Malan Breton was awarded the 2015 Taiwan Tourism Award, to honour Malan Breton for promoting Taiwan through his efforts in fashion, and entertainment.[39] In 2014 Malan Breton (Taiwan), Oscar de la Renta (Dominican Republic), Carolina Herrera (Venezuela), and Hanae Mori (Japan) were winners in the international format of the Bulgarian Fashion Awards "EIRENE", conducted under the patronage of the European Fashion Council.[40] In 2014 Malan Breton, was awarded as the UCOF "Fashion Icon of the Year", previous winners of the award are Fern Mallis, and Nigel Barker.[41] In 2011 Malan Breton and NBC Universal, Karl Lagerfeld, Matthew Williamson, Linda Farrow, and Opening Ceremony were nominated for the WGSN Global Fashion Award in the category of Outstanding Fashion Collaboration.[42]

Taiwan

Malan Breton is one of the top 30 male actors in Taipei, Taiwan.[citation needed] Breton was also listed in 2014 as number 24 of the top one hundred most popular people from Taipei, Taiwan for his work in entertainment, fashion, and as a columnist by IMDB.[43] In 2015 Malan Breton was awarded the 2015 Taiwan Tourism Award, Given by the president of Taiwan to Mr Breton for promoting Taiwan through his efforts in fashion, and entertainment.[39] In 2014, Malan Breton, the brand, partnered with the Taiwan Tourism Bureau at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week; at Lincoln Center, to present "Malan Breton a Journey to Taiwan; The Heart of Asia" The fashion show consisted of eighty eight looks inspired by the country, and people of Taiwan.[44] In 2014, a CNN article called the brand "Taiwan's Answer to Luxury Fashion"[45] In 2014, Malan Breton was commissioned by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau to design a scarf that featured both the Taiwan, and Malan Breton logos. This would mark the partnership between both entities.[15]

Malan Breton has dressed celebrities from the worlds of television, music, film, and Broadway including: Ariana Grande, Kerry Washington,[46]Nina Arianda, Scarlett Johansson, Minnie Driver,[47] Ricki Lake,[48] Martha Plimpton,.[49][50] Malan Breton Collection was noted as InStyle Magazines look of the day, worn by American Actress Katrina Bowden.[51] Malan Breton's (HOMME) Men's collection has been worn by Keith Carradine, Michael Buble, Daniel Craig, Desmond Child, Paul Wesley, Sam Witwer[46] Nolan Gerard Funk,[24][52] In 2013 Director/Choreographer Jerry Mitchell won the 2013 TONY Award for Broadway's Kinky Boots wearing Malan Breton HOMME signature red.[46] Bryce Pinkham star of Broadway's A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, won the 2014 TONY Award for "Best Musical" wearing Malan Breton HOMME.[53] The collections have been featured in W Magazine, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety Magazine, WWD, Vogue Italia, Vogue España, L’ Uomo Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Lucky Magazine, ELLE, on CNN, People, US Weekly, NY Times, GQ, Style.com, MTV, BRAVO, NBC, ABC, CBS, Arena, Lifetime, and LA Times.[54]

Partnerships and collaborations

In 2003 Malan Breton was hired to design the working wardrobe for New York City restaurant Megu, for sommelier Ryo Wada. The couture wardrobe consisted of fourteen separates, made in silk, jade, embroidery, and traditional Japanese kimono elements. These are known as Breton's first design pieces, and his first professional design job.[55] From 2006 to 2012 ELLE Magazine partnered with Malan Breton collections to present the men's and women's fashion shows at New York Fashion Week.[56] Malan Breton Collection's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week official Bryant Park fashion shows for 2008 Fall, and 2009 Spring, were sponsored by Michael Buble and Warner/ Reprise.[57] In 2009 Malan Breton created a capsule collection for Bravo Television Medias, "Shop by Bravo" website, the collection consisted of handbags, and men's jewellery.[58] For Spring 2009 Twentieth Century Fox partnered with the Malan Breton fashion show at Bryant Park, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Julie Andrews classic film Star. The collection was inspired by the film, and each of the guests received a special 40th anniversary edition DVD of the film.[59] September 2009 Malan Breton partnered with Oral - B and ELLE to present his first menswear collection for Spring 2010. The collection was noted by newscaster Maria Menounos as "red carpet ready".[60] In 2010 Malan Breton created the "Hollywood Glamour" line for www.fashionstake.com, a line of dresses under the two hundred dollar price point.[61] For Spring 2010, Spring 2011, and Spring 2012 at New York Fashion week, Malan Breton Partnered with Swiss Watch company Rado Switzerland to create theatrical stage experiences, incorporating Ballet, fashion, and Symphonic Orchestras to feature his collections.[62][63] In 2011 Malan Breton created the iconic red wedding gown line, Oui for Mattison by Malan Breton, for the wedding company Mattison Network, Country Club Bride. The gown was a featured item on Lifetime Television, OK! Magazine, Cosmopolitan Magazine, and ELLE. [64][65] In 2012 Malan Breton partnered with popular textile maker Spoonflower to design and develop the printed silks for his Spring, and Fall women's collection. [66] In 2013 Malan Breton partnered with The Estate of Marilyn Monroe and the JTV licensed collection of Marilyn Monroe jewellery to present the Fall 2013 collection at NY Fashion Week. The jewellery replicas from Monroe's private collection were paired with Breton's designs.[67][68] For Fall 2014 Malan Breton and Nestle Purina Pet Care Company brand Fancy Feast Gourmet Cat Food collaborated at New York Fashion Week. Breton designed looks inspired by the signature mascot, a silver chinchilla Persian cat.[69] In October 2013 Malan Breton was invited by Taiwan and the Smithsonian Museum to present his Spring 2014 Collections at Grand Central Station.[70] The label collaborated with Texas-based shoe company J. Renee and created a shoe line for its Autumn/ Winter 2014 women’s collection.[71] For Spring / Summer 2014 at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, at Lincoln Center, Malan Breton collaborated with Morgan Taylor Nail Lacquer, Breton designed what became the most popular nail/manicure trend in Europe for the Summer of 2014.[72][73] For Spring / Summer 2015 Malan Breton presented a collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center titled "Malan Breton a Journey to Taiwan" The show was a partnership with the Taiwan Tourism Bureau, and featured a collection inspired by Taiwan.[43]

Lectures and juries

In 2007 Malan Breton came to Princeton University to give a multifaceted presentation on "Optimizing Your Personal Style".[74] Breton has been on a panel of industry professionals at the Teen Design Fairs for 2008, 2009,2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 at Cooper-Hewitt[75] In February 2008 Malan Breton along with, Teen Vogue's Mary Kate Steinmiller, Chris Benz, and Prabal Gurung, acted as Judges at the Fusion fashion show, featuring students from FIT and Parsons school of design[76] Malan Breton served as judge to the annual WGSN Global Fashion Awards in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013[77]

TV/video game collaborations

In 2010 Breton designed costumes for NBC's prime-time game show Minute to Win It. The show starred Guy Fieri which featured "Game Agents" Petra Lauren Gilmore and Ling Ai-Li Wang each week wearing Malan Breton designs.[78][78][79] The show ran in America for four seasons, and is syndicated globally. In 2011 Malan Breton's costume designs, for the television game show Minute to Win It, were part of a packaging deal with NBC/ Universal, Nintendo Wii systems, Xbox 360, and ZOO for the video game of the same name.[80]

Television

Breton was the subject/host/co-producer of The Malan Show featured on BravoTV as a weekly series, and web series. It followed the process of making it in America as an independent designer.[81][82][83] The webisodes are featured on HULU[84] The collection was featured on an episode of Australia's Next Top Model (Cycle 4). In an episode called "New York, New York" The final 3 were judged in a retrospective catwalk of Breton's fashions, their finale fashion show before the top two were chosen.[85]

Fashion columnist

Malan Breton contributed weekly to OK! Magazine's column "Malan's Musings",.[86] Breton covered the 82nd Academy Awards for OK! Magazine in a column called "Malan Breton Takes on Oscar Fashion!"[87] Malan Breton and Jeannie Mai covered red carpet fashion for the 2012 Golden Globes Awards for OK! Magazine.[88] Malan Breton covered the wedding of HRH William and Katherine the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for OK! Magazine, in a column titled "Malan's Musings: Fashion Friday Is Here - Royal Wedding Edition!" the column was syndicated by multiple press outlets, being read by 10.8 million readers.[43][89] Breton has contributed to The New York Times, where he shared his fall favorites in a column called "My New York"[90] Breton was a weekly contributor to Dallas Morning News/Shopping Blog[91] Breton was a guest columnist at Out Magazine.[92] BravoTV.com where he wrote his own fashion and lifestyle blog[93] Breton was also the host of the Designer to Designer video and editorial columns for La'g Magazine[94] where he has interviewed designers such as John Bartlett,[95] Max Azria of BCBG,[96] Luca Orlandi of Luca Luca,[97] In 2012 Breton covered Mercedes Benz NY Fashion week for OK! Magazine in a column called "Malan's Musings," "Fashion Designer Malan Breton Takes You Inside NYC Fashion Week!" Malan Breton dedicates their time to amFAR[100] and Care and Share India[101] July 7, 2010 Fashion Designer Malan Breton presided over the NASDAQ closing Bell accompanied by representatives from Care and Share India.[102]
