This month:

One database for Wikipedia requests

Development of the extension for setting up WikiProjects, as described in the last issue of this newsletter, is currently underway. No terribly exciting news on this front.

In the meantime, we are working on a prototype for a new service we hope to announce soon. The problem: there are requests scattered all across Wikipedia, including requests for new articles and requests for improvements to existing articles. We Wikipedians are very good at coming up with lists of things to do. But once we write these lists, where do they end up? How can we make them useful for all editors—even those who do not browse the missing articles lists, or the particular WikiProjects that have lists?

Introducing Wikipedia Requests, a new tool to centralize the various lists of requests around Wikipedia. Requests will be tagged by category and WikiProject, making it easier to find requests based on what your interests are. Accompanying this service will be a bot that will let you generate reports from this database on any wiki page, including WikiProjects. This means that once a request is filed centrally, it can syndicated all throughout Wikipedia, and once it is fulfilled, it will be marked as "complete" throughout Wikipedia. The idea for this service came about when I saw that it was easy to put together to-do lists based on database queries, but it was harder to do this for human-generated requests when those requests are scattered throughout the wiki, siloed throughout several pages. This should especially be useful for WikiProjects that have overlapping interests.

The newsletter this month is fairly brief; not a lot of news, just checking in to say that we are hard at work and hope to have more for you soon.

Hi Sam Sailor, I just logged in and noticed that you reverted my changes on the Shield_Portable page and was wondering what was wrong with the edits? I do work at NVIDIA (disclosed on my profile) and there is an issue on Wikipedia with confusion between NVIDIA SHIELD (as a family of products, which is what it is) and with NVIDIA SHIELD the portable game player (but this use of the term is deprecated). The SHIELD handheld gameplayer is now referred to as the portable. I was trying to make things more factually correct. How do we make this reflect what is currently being used? Thanks!!! @Sam Sailor:.No worries - will fix when I dive in to try to update some other corporate things. An issue we're seeing is that when someone out in Googleland does a query for "NVIDIA SHIELD", google put a SHIELD Portable next to our URL and then embeds a drop down all about the portable. I did a massive amount of digging and found that our wiki data page seems to be the problem - notice how the wiki data page is the SHIELD "family" page, but it's linking to SHIELD "Portable" data for EN, JA, PL, PT, RU, and UK? I think this is incorrectly informing Google. So, I'm going to try to clean things up, carefully. But maybe next week. ;-) Popoki 🐱🐱 chat 00:30, 8 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Overhasty G13 nomination

Hi Sam, for Draft:Three Pedals you have placed the g13 tag too early. It is not 6 months since you or anyone else last edited it. You should have waited over 3 full days before nominating it again. I suspect you have nominated some others early. All this does is make the page wait another 6 months when I decline the g13 delete! Graeme Bartlett (talk) 07:00, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes there were a whole batch of premature nominations. When something was last edited on 9 September 2015, it can only be nominated for a g13 deletion after 9 March 2016. I suppose you get that early notification for pages that are going to be eligible, but the purpose seems to be so that you can save them. Not to scrap them sooner! Just a quick note to say Happy New Year and thank you for your help so far with the draft of the Ned Abraham article...albeit March now...Thank you for your New Years greeting. I am still pretty lost with the communication processes as I only have around 15 minutes a day to work on Wikipedia during my work hours. I have much work to do on the article but understand better what is required. I will continue to work on it until it's good enough to publish. Thanks again for your help. Draft:Elif Caglar

Dear Sam,

Hope you're ok. You've helped me through the submission process before, telling to post on Wikipedia Turkey Project page to get help about the Turkish references. I did but no one helped. The artist i want to add to Wikipedia is an award winning jazz musician who makes records with worldwide known musicians which is easy to verify with a quick look on the internet, not to mention her references are in the draft too. Less known musicians in her genre have made it as an article with less references, so i am thinking they were luckier only and am asking you once again if there is anything else i should be doing after this point. Thank you so much for your kind directions thus far : ) Peace.
