The WebPlatform consists of several APIs to create web and mobile applications[1]. The APIs give developers device and vendor-neutral access to common elements, such as[1]:

  • location
  • battery
  • filesystem
  • camera
  • microphone
  • screen orientation
  • ambient light

In addition, the WebPlatform APIs provide interfaces for the following[1]:

  • real-time communication
  • long-running background processes
  • making HTTP requests
  • playing audio and video

WebPlatform.org is a community convened by W3C that is seeking to create an online reference of Web standards. The project is a collaboration among Adobe Systems, Apple Inc., Facebook, Google, HP, Microsoft, Mozilla, Nokia, Opera Software, and W3C, who are called "stewards" of the Web Platform project.[2]

Web Platform is an open community of developers building resources for a better web, regardless of brand, browser, or platform. Anyone can contribute to the reference, by collaborating in the wiki documentation pages (Web Platform Docs), sharing and commenting on the Web Platform blog posts, and communicating through the IRC channel. WebPlatform Docs uses MediaWiki as its platform.[3] The documentation contains sections titled Beginners Guide, General Web Concepts, HTML, CSS, Accessibility, JavaScript, DOM, API & SVG, originally imported from resources maintained by the involved parties.

As of September 2015 it has been discontinued with the notice "The WebPlatform project has been discontinued when the Stewards partnership agreement ended in September 2015. This site has been frozen, and the assets we have created will remain."
