Copyright violations on Chartered Institutes for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Chartered_Institute_for_the_Management_of_Sport_and_Physical_Activity

Thank you for flagging the copyright violation. I agree with the removal. However, there was other content that was removed that did not come from the website you flagged. This included infobox additions, a new section, and other text in the introduction not related to the vision/mission paragraphs.

I have reintroduced these elements onto the page. I will leave mission/vision absent.

COI on my profile. Happy to add elsewhere if needed.

While it may not seem like the right thing to do, it is convention, when identifying a copyright issue, to do a rollback, which sometimes picks up other copyright issues and sometimes picks up inrelated,a nd non-problematic issues. You are always welcome to restore the non-copyright issue edits.

Thank you!

Your attention to cleaning up copyvios such as this is hugely appreciated. I'm not sure if you're aware, but there is a thread at AN/I discussing the various concerns, including copyright violations, with many accounts associated with the 1lib1ref.org project. No reply necessary, just an FYI (and a thank you). -- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 00:53, 31 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ponyo, I was not aware of that thread, but starting to wonder if I should start one. I'll check it out, but give me a sec, I'm working on another one :) S Philbrick(Talk) 00:55, 31 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

March of the Living 2020 Program Update

Hello,

I updated the March of the Living page to reflect the cancellation of the 2020 program due to Covid-19. I footnoted all of the sources, nothing was copyrighted or copied from another wiki page, so I am wondering what is the issue so I can fix the problem.

I believe your issue is with the below so can you please advise:

“This year, for the first time in 32 years, we are not able to march in Auschwitz-Birkenau, but that will not stop us. We will continue to educate the next generation with the values we have been teaching for three decades.”Dr. Shmuel Rosenman, March of the Living Chairman, “[1]

“We were bitterly disappointed to have to postpone this year’s March of the Living. However, we remain utterly determined to ensure that the unparalleled tragedy of the Holocaust remains at the forefront of the world’s conscience. Given the distressing recent rise in global antisemitism and today’s need for greater compassion and tolerance, the lessons of the Holocaust are more relevant than ever,” March of the Living president, Phyllis Greenberg Heideman.[2]

Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin, the first to lay a virtual plaque, wrote this in his message: “75 years after the Holocaust the terrible tragedy of our people as antisemitism raises its ugly head once again across the world the nations of the world must stand together. Together in the struggle against racism. Together in the struggle against antisemitism and extremism. Together for the protection of democratic values and human dignity. This is the mission of our time. This is our challenge..”[3]

Thanks,

Eli

Hello, I am responding to the lines below. 1)@Uiaeli: Here is a link to the iThenticate report: When I clicked on this link it asked me to pay a fee of $100.00 to register with iThenticate to see the report. Is this what you are expecting me to do?

iThenticate it shows substantial overlap with copyrighted sources.S Philbrick(Talk) 19:09, 2 June 2020 (UTC) 2) This comment appears to be cryptic. Since I cannot open the link above, can you be more specific about the "substantial overlap with copyrighted source” you claim is taking place? The only copyrighted sources are short quotes from on line newspaper articles which is commonly done all over Wikipedia and virtually everywhere else and are allowed by the publications themselves. This is the article: https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/march-of-the-living-launches-virtual-holocaust-remembrance-initiative-624615

Thank You, Eli — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uiaeli (talkcontribs) 20:07, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Uiaeli, No sorry, I thought it would be available to you. I thought I had shared links before with no issues. You write:
Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin, the first to lay a virtual plaque, wrote this in his message:
The copyrighted article says:
President Reuven Rivlin was the first to place a virtual plaque, writing:
That's a close paraphrase, and doesn't involve the material in quotes.
The three quotes were 42 words, 65 word and 62 words.
It is my opinion that three quotes totaling 169 words doesn't qualify as "brief".
However. I have reverted the revdel, I'm asking you to rewrite the section noted above, and let other editors weigh in on the acceptable length of the quotes, if you choose to re-add them. S Philbrick(Talk) 22:39, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you S Philbrick for explaining the above. I will rephrase the text about President Rivlin so it's less identical. We'll wait and see how other editors feel about the length of the quotes. Thanks Again, Eli — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uiaeli (talkcontribs) 20:14, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Uiaeli, Thanks. I understand the difficulty of rephrasing. I often say it isn't hard, but I didn't see a simple solution or I would have suggested it myself, but I thank-you for committing to make the effort. S Philbrick(Talk) 22:25, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for responding so quickly. All the best, Eli — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uiaeli (talkcontribs) 15:13, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Third World Women's Alliance revert

Hi,

Thanks for monitoring copyright issues on Wikipedia! In the case of the Third World Women's Alliance, I'm copying text from the Sophia Smith Collection finding aid for the Third World Women's Alliance records, which is licensed under the Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0) license. I added a CC-By notice to the citation to indicate I was using copied text under a Creative Commons license. The page that you link to is only a copy of the original finding aid owned by Smith College. Please restore my edits, or let me know if there is anything else I need to do to avoid copyright issues.

Thanks! SmokedPaprika (talk) 14:34, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SmokedPaprika, I undid my revdel. We can discuss what else, if anything I should do, but I'm on hold at the moment with a travel agent. S Philbrick(Talk) 17:23, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
SmokedPaprika, Thanks for responding so positively. I can completely understand that if you done everything right it must be annoying to have somebody come along and do it on you. One of the challenges when dealing with copyright issues is that many websites borrow material from sources that are appropriately licensed and either failed to note the license on the site where they place the information, or worse, affirmatively assert copyright over the whole page. Those situations are annoying to deal with. In this particular case they did not assert copyright but our assumption is in the absence of a clear license, copyright is implied.
In a small coincidence, I've use material from the Sophia Smith collection before I believe, in connection with articles about women's basketball. I even visited the library at Smith where the materials are stored. I know I looked into copyright issues but my admittedly vague recollection is that I walked away without a clear understanding of the copyright status. If you could point me to the location of the license, I would be grateful as it may inspire me to go back and do some more work using their materials.
In the meantime, I undid the revision deletion, but I see there were subsequent edits so I did not reverse my edit. Let me know if you want me to do anything further, but I'm still on the phone so I might have to wait until my phone call ends before I do anything that requires real thinking. S Philbrick(Talk) 17:29, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for undoing the revdel! The text of the finding aids at Smith College Special Collections are all licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License, at the bottom of each page. So all the description of the Senda Berenson papers could be freely copied and pasted. The copyright of the materials themselves vary pretty widely, but you can email specialcollections@smith.edu for any copyright-related questions and our staff will do our best to help! If you come visit us in person after we reopen, you can always ask the archivist on duty at the reading room desk. SmokedPaprika (talk) 14:27, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SmokedPaprika, Thanks. Does this look familiar? File:Alumnae Gymnasium (Smith College).jpg. I took that seven years ago when I perused the collection. S Philbrick(Talk) 14:32, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

copyvio

In 2017, you cleaned up an article for copyvio. But it looks like you didn't do a complete job since a whole second paragraph copied from the blogspot citation was still left there, maybe because the blogspot URL is broken. You can visit the correct page by replacing the blogspot.in with blogspot.com. Also, the article should be moved to Sheikh Chilli (Sufi saint) since only the second copyviod paragraph is about the character, the rest is about the real deal. Hi, Thanks for the complete draft page deletion. I am a student of the above centre. Our centre is a public institution and its website is owned by a public body. Copying from the webpage is an instruction from my professors. The copyright provided at http://clc.du.ac.in/ is used as preventive means for outsiders trying to imitate the official website. I request you to kindly excuse this case from copyright violation.

Thank You. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AB3456789 (talkcontribs) 14:47, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@AB3456789: Thanks for providing that information. However, if your professors instructed you to copy the contents of the website into a Wikipedia page, I urge you to inform them that they have requested that you break the law. Copyright is a legal matter, and cannot simply be "excused".
If the school wishes to license the contents in a way that can be used in Wikipedia they should visit:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Donating_copyrighted_materials
However, given the goal to keep outside is from trying to imitate the official website, this approach is unlikely to be useful as that license allows anyone anywhere to copy the material and edited in almost any way they choose as long as they provide attribution. In addition, it is rare that material written by an organization meets our neutrality standards so even if the school were to decide it wanted to license the text it might still not be acceptable.
Of course, it is desirable to have an article in Wikipedia about the school, but it should be written using the official website as a source for information, but the text should be written in your own words. Writing a Wikipedia article is harder than some people realize. S Philbrick(Talk) 15:45, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing is wrong with copying within Wikipedia as long as it is clearly identified and attributed. For future use, would you note the best practices wording as outlined at Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia? In particular, adding the phrase "see that page's history for attribution" helps ensure that proper attribution is preserved.S Philbrick(Talk) 15:44, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of copyrighted text

Hi Sphilbrick,

I am very new to editing on Wikipedia so I'm just looking for some clarification.

I made some edits to the following post: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Voice_of_Women_for_Peace, and while I completely understand the reasons for reverting the changes that linked to the Canadian Encyclopedia, I'm not sure why you reversed all of the other changes I made to the article - namely the inclusion of the archival sources.

At this time, I will have to spend a bit more time reading up about the linking of outside articles (I was under the impression that I attributed the source correctly, but I likely didn't, so I'll figure out how to do it properly so that it doesn't infringe copyright), but I would like to have the changes that I made that aren't associated with the link to the Canadian Encyclopedia reverted.

Thanks, Archyvette (talk) 15:41, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Archyvette, It's a very fair question. I'm actually surprised it isn't asked more often.
Over the years we've worked out procedures to deal with violations of copyright policy. One of the standard things we do when identifying a problematic edit is to use the rollback option. As a very new editor might not even know what this means. Any editor has the ability to undo any single edit, and undoing a single edit is often an appropriate thing to do. There is another option called Rollback which undoes all consecutive edits of a single editor at one time. Brand-new editors do not have this as an option but more experience editors and administrators do have this tool at their fingertips.
Obviously, you could point out that if you made five edits in a row, and the third one was the only one with a copyright issue, that the proper thing to do is to undo that particular edit. However the following sequence of events is fairly common:
a new editor sees a paragraph that they think is not particularly well worded, and finds a discussion elsewhere that is much better worded. They aren't aware that the better worded discussion subject to copyright. To prepare to add this paragraph they first remove the existing paragraph in one edit, add the new material in a second edit, and then make some tweaks to the new material in a few subsequent edits. I hope you can understand that in such a situation it makes sense to undo all of those edits.
Of course there are other situations, where an editor may make some appropriate edits, followed by addition of some copyrighted material, followed by some additional edits to another section that have nothing to do with the copyrighted material so the ideal situation is to undo the middle edits. However, it is often difficult to tease out exactly what's going on, and when you recognize that we get several hundred such reports a week, we don't have enough volunteers to check every single edit in a sequence identifying which ones need to be undone and which ones can remain. A process is to do Rollback, and the original editor is free to redo the edits that may be fine.
If that's not easy to do because you did not save the material elsewhere, you can let me know and I can reverse the revision deletion temporarily, make the information available to you so that you can recover the acceptable edits, and then I can reinstate the revision deletion allowing you to re-add the acceptable material. If that applies let me know. I hope I've explained why what looks like ham-fisted reversion is actually done. S Philbrick(Talk) 20:10, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sphilbrick, yes, could you please revert it temporarily - I will copy the other information and put it back without the copyrighted section. I can send you a message once it's been done? Thanks, Archyvette (talk) 11:23, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Archyvette, I have undone the revision deletion. Please drop me a note when you have finished recovering the information that doesn't infringe copyright. Thanks. S Philbrick(Talk) 12:03, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright issue with my edits to 'List of killings by law enforcement officers in the United Kingdom'

List_of_killings_by_law_enforcement_officers_in_the_United_Kingdom

Hello, you reverted my edits to this article again because of copyright. Please can you point out where exactly the copyright issues are? Last time I reverted the edit, I changed the part which you have pointed out, which was a "copyright issue re https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/shine-a-light/black-deaths-still-fighting-for-justice-in-uk/", then reinstated the rest of it. So where is the problem now? Also, is this the right place to have the discussion, or should it be on the article's talk page? Thanks LondonBrit (talk) 17:10, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

LondonBrit, sorry to be picky about process, but I got a notice that you reverted my edit. While I haven't looked closely, it appears that you reverted my edit, then removed the copyrighted text, but that's not the right process as it leaves violations of copyright in the history. You didn't explain what you did. So when I saw the reversion I undid the whole thing. For future use, if you are starting with material that's copyrighted work on it outside of Wikipedia and then make an edit that doesn't include a violation of copyright. Please note that edit summaries are very important. Had you included an edit summary that explained you were addressing the copyright problem, I still would've had to do a revision deletion but I would not have needed to revert your edit. I understand you are new and may not know these things, but we take copyright very seriously. S Philbrick(Talk) 18:17, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll remember to include edit summaries. Can you explain how to get back the rest of the edits I made which didn't have copyright problems though? I had converted one of the sections of the article into a table, and added many new citations and information. LondonBrit (talk) 21:50, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
LondonBrit, Yes, I temporarily undid the revision deletion of the intervening edit so that you can recover any appropriate material. S Philbrick(Talk) 12:37, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I've done it (including the new contributions since).LondonBrit (talk) 13:06, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Information changes

Hi, I brought some changes to the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Grazia_Giammarinaro. I am new to Wikipedia, in fact I am registered only after making the changes. I'd like to understand which link infringed copyright. What you mentioned isn't worth being on the page because the links are all references to specific documents. I am working directly for the subject of the page, so if releases are needed they will not be a problem — Preceding unsigned comment added by Webisy (talkcontribs) 17:00, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Webisy, If you work for the subject then you need to read:
wp:coi
and comply with the disclosure requirements.
The bulk of your edit included material copied from this site
That's a UN site so I'm going to be very surprised if you are authorized to release the contents. S Philbrick(Talk) 17:44, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Forgive me, but not so I understand correctly. To make a change, do I have to propose it before publishing it? I read the guidelines in Italian and I had not found anything about it.

I also take this opportunity to ask you if you can tell me how I can, once these problems have been resolved, translate the page into Italian.

Thanks a lot, as soon as I find out if those documents are in the public domain or not, I find a way to solve the problem.

@Webisy: It is not, in general, necessary to propose a change before publishing it, but those are best practices when it comes to people with a conflict of interest. I'm not sure that's literally required, although I personally think it ought to be. However, what is required are disclosure requirements as outlined at the page I already identified. The separate issue which is unrelated to the conflict of interest issue, is that much of your edit in involved copying from a United Nations page. This actually turns out to be a potentially complicated issue, as copying of some lists is permitted under copyright law, so pure compilations of lists of publications are typically permitted. It is my opinion that your edit, which included titles of publications did not qualify, but it might be worth getting input from other copyright experts.
Regarding translation, I have no skills in other languages but there are a number of resources at Wikipedia:Translation.--S Philbrick(Talk) 11:51, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your revert in Erwadi

Hi, 2 queries i am looking for clarification from your deletion of contents from Erwadi. 1. The URL you have mentioned has copied from WP and not vice-versa. 2. Even in that case, not all the contents in Wikipedia are found in that URL there are contents from other sources which are deleted together. Please help how to overcome this as those content are vital for that page. Wasif (talk) 15:03, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wasifwasif, Please read WP:COPYWITHIN. Lunch calls, more later. S Philbrick(Talk) 17:05, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wasifwasif, To elaborate, copying within Wikipedia is permitted but it must be done correctly to preserve attribution as well as to avoid the impression that it's a copyright violation. I linked the guideline. Feel free to redo the edits following the guideline. S Philbrick(Talk) 17:48, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jovie Espenido Article

Hi! Thanks for checking my article. I am paraphrasing the copyrighted materials. I am working it now. Jsnueva1022 (talk) 18:13, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jsnueva1022, Please be aware of Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. You need to ensure that you are doing more than superficial rewriting. S Philbrick(Talk) 19:09, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I came to Boiardi because I didn't know Chef Boyardee's first name, only to see that you had deleted it because it was a name disambiguation page. Why was that a reason to delete it? Wikipedia has lots of surname disambiguation pages: just look at Hunnicutt. Also: How does G6 describe your deletion? Khemehekis (talk) 22:26, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Khemehekis, G6 accurately describes the deletion rationale. The entire point of the disambiguation page is to create a list of items associated with a single term to help the reader understand which one they mean. If there's only one entry, by definition it's not needed.
You indicated that you wanted it because you were not aware of his first name, but we handle that by creating a redirect. if you think there are people who might be familiar with the name "Boiardi" and not know his first name, so would not know how to search for "Ettore Boiardi", you address that by creating a redirect from Boiardi to Ettore Boiardi. You can still do that if you wish although I note that if you search for Boiardi, the very first entry in the list is Ettore Boiardi, so I'm not quite sure how the redirect as information that's not already available. Reverted edits on Morris Federation page

Hello, thank you for pointing out my errors in editing the Morris Federation article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Federation) using content from their website. I'm new to Wikipedia editing and hadn't done my research properly. I was asked by the Morris Federation committee to update the article and given permission to use text from their website; the resulting text for the updated Wikipedia article was reviewed and approved by the committee. I have now read the article on 'Donating copyrighted materials' and just wanted to check with you, if the committee president confirms this from an official email address to permissions-en@wikimedia.org using the recommended template, will that be sufficient for my edits from this afternoon to be restored? Many thanks for your time. Kate KJMcQ (talk) 22:39, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

KJMcQ, sorry in advance that this may be discouraging.
If the copyright holder provides the license, that means the text can be used without violating our copyright policy, but that doesn't make it automatically acceptable. It still must be editorially acceptable. It is quite common that text written by a corporation turns out not to be acceptable as is, even if licensed, although text written by a museum, for example, is more likely to be written in a neutral way. I didn't look closely at the text, but it didn't jump out at me as problematic. However, it sound like you are working with the organization, so you need to read and comply with the WP:COI guideline. S Philbrick(Talk) 23:39, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
KJMcQ, didn't fully answer your question. If the license is provided and accepted by OTRS, and you comply with the COI disclosure, I can restore the edits. However, that leaves them open to any other editor, as is true of virtually all edits, to rewrite or challenge on another basis. S Philbrick(Talk) 23:42, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your guidance. I would rather know what all the concerns are so that I can try to address them. We're working on the copyright question. COI could be a greater issue, but I will review my text to be sure that it is neutral and make sure that I fully disclose my connections to the Federation on the talk page of the Morris Federation article. If it still isn't acceptable then that is a shame, as it seems unlikely that anyone with no connection to the Federation would have the motivation to expand the article, but I understand that the rules are in place for good reasons. Anstituto de la Lhéngua Mirandesa

Hi Sphilbrick, I wasn’t aware of breaking any copyrights by quoting the URLs on this article and adding texts. Apologies for any inconvenience and please let me know of any relevant info re: good practices on using quotes/citations? Best regards Melroross (talk) 14:07, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Melroross, Although Wikipedia:Quotations is just an essay, it has some good advice. S Philbrick(Talk) 22:42, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your revert at Terry Spinks

Hello. Re your revert at Terry Spinks, citing this webpage dated April 2017. The edits reverted weren't mine, but I noticed the revert and thought it didn't seem likely.

The detail of Mr Spinks' professional fights was added unsourced with these edits in 2008. Give or take a spelling correction, it remained unchanged in the article until reproduced verbatim at the playingpasts website in 2017, and was still in place until early this morning when it was removed as unsourced. I didn't see User:Egghead06's edits, but I'm guessing they must have restored some of that content.

The only copyvio I see is the reproduction apparently without attribution of WP content on a website which, judging by its pretensions and the reputation of some of its named contributors, ought to know better. That webpage also reproduces content pre-dating 2017 from Matt Walker (swimmer), Lia Manoliu and plenty more. Am I misunderstanding something? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:56, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Struway2, I think you may be right. I undid the revision deletion so you can see what was done. This is a perfect example of why good edit summaries are important. While the addition had an edit summary:
"Adding/improving reference(s)"
That didn't really tell me what was going on. A better edit summary would've explained that the editor was restoring material removed and including references. Had it said that, I wouldn't have reverted it. S Philbrick(Talk) 14:05, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Struway2, BTW, thanks for bringing this to my attention. S Philbrick(Talk) 14:17, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

hi, do you need svg-versions for Alpine Canada-logos? --Mrmw (talk) 06:13, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mrmw, I love SVGs except for logos. It's my opinion that when an image is used as a nonfree image, a low resolution version is a key aspect, and as you know SVG images images maintain the resolution when blown up. For that reason, I prefer not to use SVG for nonfree images. However, thanks for the offer. S Philbrick(Talk) 12:32, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
