Montazur Rahman Akbar is a Bangladeshi film director, screenwriter, producer, social activist and entrepreneur. He is known for his work in the Bengali language film industry, which is centered in Dhaka, Bangladesh.[1] Akbar was a freedom fighter in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.[2][3][4][5] After directing multiple plays, he worked as an assistant director on the films Chhutir Ghonta and Janata Express under directors Matin Rahman and Azizur Rahman from 1979 to 1990.[6][7]
Akbar became a director in 1991 and has worked with actor Manna in 22 films, writer Abdullah Zahir Babu in 46 films, actor Dipjol in 19 films and editor Amzad Hossain in 24 films.[8] He has written screenplays for some of his films, and founded the production companies Nayan-Apon Production and Star Plus, and is co-founder of Panorama Movies. Akbar's films introduced Dipjol, Popy, Keya, Riya Sen, Shakiba, Songita, Antara Biswas and Puspi to Dhallywood.[9][10][11][12] Akbar served as board executive member of Bangladesh Film Producers and Distributors Association and Bangladesh Film Directors Association.[13][14][15] He founded a development NGO, Prochesta and theater organization Drama Circle.[16][17][18] He has also directed television commercials and drama serials.[19][20] Akbar has appeared as guest judge for multiple television programs.[21][22] He also runs several business enterprises.[1][23]
Personal life
Family
Akbar's parents was Kabir Uddin Mondol and Rupjan Bibi. His father was a fish wholesale agent and two-time elected union council member supporting the Awami League in Joypurhat, while his mother was a housewife. He has three brothers and three sisters. One of his brothers, Istofa Rahman, was a cinematographer in Bangladeshi cinema. Akbar married Mariam Rahman on 13 March 1978, and they have three sons. Akbar's elder son, Apu Monwar, was a news editor for Ekattor Television.
Education
Akbar attended SSC in Akkelpur FU Pilot High School in 1973 and HSC from Akkelpur MR Degree College in 1975. He received a bachelor's degree (BA) from Joypurhat Government College in 1977. During college, he worked in his father's fish business and distributed fish across north Bangladesh. Akbar fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 under sector seven, sector commander Quazi Nuruzzaman, and group commander Saidur Rahman, training at Panikhoni in Siliguri, India.[2][3] He was also an active member of Bangladesh Chatro Union at that time.[5][24]
Philanthropy
Akbar is the Executive Director of a non-governmental organization, Prochesta, which he founded in 2000, in his hometown, Joypurhat.[25] Prochesta works in urban development projects with local donors and partner organizations including Democracy Watch, NGO Forum, and Aristocrat Society to improve drinking water supply and sanitation throughout Joypurhat and neighboring districts.[26] Prochesta also teaches people in basic hygiene practices such as hand sanitization.[27] Prochesta organizes group savings and credit program and listed 400 group small society.[28][29]
Career
In the 1970s, Akbar was involved in theater at college in the village Chantara Club and his college club Akkelpur MR College Club. Between 1973–1978, he directed stage dramas including Pagla Garod, Sidur Niyona Muche, Ek Mutho Vat, Dayie Ke, Malar Prem, Nowab Siraj Ud Dowla. He was also an active member of Bangladesh Chatro Union at that time. He was also involved in his father's fish wholesale business.[7]
In the 1980s, Akbar worked as assistant director under Azizur Rahman on several films including Chhutir Ghonta, Janata Express, Mayer Achol, Mehman, Mohanogor, Jontor Montor, and Sonar Tori.[30] He also worked for Matin Rahman on films including Lal Kajol, Jibon Dhara, Radha Kishna and Birangona Sokhina. He worked with Zillur Rahman on Tokdirer Khela, Miss Lolita, Achol Bondi, and Sukh Tara.[31] In 1989, he was a special correspondent for Weekly Nipoon, a weekly entertainment magazine published in Dhaka.[32][33][34]
Akbar's first film as director was Takar Pahar (1993), produced by Anwar Hossain Afjal elder brother of Dipjol.[35][36] His first film to be released was Nyay Juddho in 1991. In 1992, Ilias Kanchon and Diti acted in his third film Chakor. The film was grossed 2 crore against budget 60 lakh. In 1993 he directed Prem Dewana, produced by Movie Mughal A. K. M. Jahangir Khan under his banner Alamgir Pictures. He also directed Alamgir Pictures's Disco Dancer (1994) and Babar Adesh (1995).[37][38]
In 1996, he directed the films Baghini Konna, Khalnayok, Bashira, and Shoitan Manush. In 1997, he directed Coolie. The film grossed 70 million with a budget of 12 million making it the highest-grossing Bangladeshi film of 1997.[39] It was also the debut of actress Sadika Parvin Popy.[40] He cast Mousumi later that year in the romantic film Andha Bhalobasha and Almgir Pictures film Amar Maa.[41][42] In 1998, fight director Arman become a producer, founding her film production company Arman Production, with Akbar directing another Manna film Shanto Keno Mastan, grossing of 50 million against a budget of 9 million, akbar directed 5 films for Arman Production.[43] Akbar directed Indo-Bangla joint venture film Moner Moto Mon, but the film did not do well. Moner Moto Mon was his third collaboration with Bony pictures after working as an assistant director on films Miss Lolita (1985) and Radha Kishno (1992).[39][44] In 1999, he was advisor director of Helal Khan's film Asha Amar Asha and 5 directed of Ke Amar Baba, Bhoyongkor Bishu, Moger Mulluk and Lathi.[45]
In 2000, Akbar co-founded production company Panorama Movies with Monjurul Hassan where he produced and directed Kukkhato Khuni. The movie grossed 350 million with a 9 million budget, making it the highest-grossing Bangladeshi movie at that time.[46] It premiered on 89 screens and was released as a 35mm negative format film. A print was hijacked in Gabtoli, Mirpur road then reprinted and delivered to a booked hall.[35] Arman Production's second film was Gunda Number One. His next film was Mone Pore Tomake which introduced Riya Sen to mainstream cinema.[9][47]
In 2001, Akbar established a distributorship of the electronics brand Walton at Joypurhat under Apu Electronics Bazar (2001 - 2014). Rituparna Sen Gupta and Ilias Kanchon were cast in Chairman. Arman Production's third film Kothing Bastob, which introduced Keya, Rongbaz Badsha and Bhoungkor Sonstrasi, film Bhoungkor Sontrasi was banned by censor board.[10] In 2002, he produced and directed Bhayanok Songghorso and an Arman Production film Major Saheb, and a Dipjol production film Dhakaiya Mastan and also directed three other films Arman, Mastaner Upor Mastan, Aghat Palta Aghat. In 2003, he produced and directed Bachao, Top Somrat, Dipjol film Kothin Shimar, Mousumi Produced film Bouer Somman, he also wrote songs for the films Big Boss [13] In 2004, he directed Bostir Rani Suriya with leads Sadika Parveen Popy, Shakib Khan and Dipjol.[48] In 2005, he directed Parvej Film Bhoyonkor Raja and Action Lady.[49]
In 2006, he founded Nayan-Apon Production under the banner of the films, System (2006) and Nishidhdho Prem (2007) produced by his wife Mariam Rahman, he also directed Dushman Khotom in 2006 and Kukkhato Nuru in 2007. In 2008, he founded StarPlus and produced and directed Babar Jonno Joddho. In 2009, he directed a Dipjol-produced film Kajer Manush which was a hit at the box office and won the Janatar Niswas Personality Award.[50][dead link] He later directed Tumi Amar Swami in 2009. He was also a guest judge on television reality programs Super Hero Super Heroin (NTV).
In 2010, he directed and produced Top Hero with Shakib Khan. He and Dipjol casted Mayer Chokh and Rikshawalar Chele in his next film Evabey Bhalobasha Hoy. The film used songs by singer S.D. Rubel. The film was successful at the box office.[51][52] In 2011, he directed Dipjol films Chotto Songsar and Bajarer Coolie and he was a guest judge on Mirakkel Akkel Challenger (2011) on Zee Bangla for Bangladeshi audition part.[53] In 2013, he directed Jaaz Multimedia films Tobuo Bhalobashi. Akbar switched to television and directed his first TV drama Pakhal which aired in 2013.[54] He directed package dramas Golden Swarna, Bracelate, Kuasha, and the drama serials Kaji Saheber Tin Putro and Pakhi Ebong Mnushera.[55] Most of these were not accepted by the authority, leading him to set up his own business. He directed television commercials and documentaries such as Agency Greenland Training Center, Decent Holding and Hiton TV. He was a guest judge Voice of the Nation (2013) of Ekushey Television.[54][1]
In 2014, he produced and directed low budget films Age Jodi Jantam Tui Hobi Por and My Name Is Simi. After the success of the Walton showroom, he took distribution of Pran under the trading corporation Mariam Traders later that year.[56][57] In 2015, he produced and directed Bojhena Se Bojhena which yielded average success at the box office. He also set up furniture brand Furniture Village.[58] In 2016, he returned to the mainstream media with the film Nawab Siraj-Ud-Dowla produced by United Club in Jamalgonj Theatre in Jamalgonj, Joypurhat.[32] In 2017, he directed Dulavai Zindabad which yielded average box office and established a fashion house Cholte Cholte (2016-2017).[32][59][60][61]
In 2018, he founded the theater group Drama Circle in Joypurhat, Bangladesh, his first film under the group was Swadhinota Amar Maa.[16] He also directed short films Obohela, Riksawalar Shopno, Mobile Recharge, Ekti Premer Mrittu, Ekjon Medhabi Chatrir Mrittu, Dance Teacher.[62][63] He also directed 53 episodes of the Soap opera Ekdin Protidin for Asian Tv. He now in production My Darling, Ayna, Kajer Chele.[64][65][66][67]
