Ave Maryam (local parlance: [a'fɛ ma'rɪam]; initially Salt is Leaving the Sea) is a 2019 romance drama film written, directed, and produced by Ertanto Robby Soediskam. It stars Maudy Koesnaedi, Chicco Jerikho, Tutie Kirana, Olga Lydia, Joko Anwar, and Nathania Angela. The film centers around a forbidden intimate relationship between a sister and a pastor, serving a Catholic church.

The Indonesian film premiered at the 2018 Hanoi International Film Festival. Locally, it premiered at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival. The film was theatrically released on 11 April 2019. It received 80,000 audiences in 39 theatres nationwide. It was later released on Netflix on September 2020. The 12-minute cut version was the one shown theatrically and on Netflix, whilst the uncut version screened at film festivals. The film received positive reviews; it was saluted for its Catholic theme and symbolic elements and was criticised for being unrealistic. It won three awards and was a candidate for Indonesia's 92nd Academy Awards submission.

Plot

Maryam, a 40-year-old woman born to a Muslim family, initially works as a sister in an orphanage. There, she interacts with people from various religions. She later moves to Ambarawa, Semarang in 1980, to work at St. Stanislaus Girisonta Church after meeting seven friendly older sisters and deciding to be their assistant. She is introduced as a new member of the church by Romo[exnote 1] Martin to senior nun Sister Monic and Mitra Sepuh Monastery manager Mila.[exnote 2] Maryam's routine involves showering old, sick sisters; cleaning the environment; and preparing meals. She is helped by Dinda, a Muslim girl who frequently sends milk and food.

One day, the sisters receive the announcement of Martin being replaced with new pastor Yosef, Monic's foster child, until Christmas. Yosef's presence had been predicted by Martin for a long time. Yosef is set to teach orchestra for Maryam and all sisters. Yosef's virtuoso-level musical ability makes Maryam fall in love with him. Monic warns Yosef about Maryam's attitude but fails to persuade him. They get closer, even when they know it is forbidden;[exnote 3] at one point, they run on the beach naked and make out.[exnote 2] She is guilt-ridden, then questions her faith in serving Jesus and leaves the church upon the sisters' notice, despite them trying to calm her down. She boards the city-leaving train, but hallucinates that Yosef is looking at her, tempting her to disembark and miss the train.

On an unknown date, Maryam goes to Girisonta's confessional, confessing her sins; unbeknownst to her, Yosef is the pastor. He has to disguise his voice. Hearing her apology, he silently cries with heartbreak. She leaves right after the sisters pass by.

The film, which was based upon true events,[exnote 4] was initially titled Salt is Leaving the Sea[3] (Indonesian: Garam Meninggalkan Lautnya); the title was changed to Ave Maryam, a mixture of "Ave Maria" and "Maryam." Before starting production, the film's crew mailed out letters seeking approval to related organizations, including the Semarang diocese, realizing its theme could be interpreted as sensitive by the Indonesian general public. Director, writer, and producer Ertanto Roby Soediskam said that he was ready to face backlash and controversy, saying: "We wanted to make the film honestly, so we've taken that [inherited] risk."[4] Ertanto hoped that the film "could connect you with your loved ones, [and to] help you love yourself and everyone around you."[5]

After being approved, principal photography was implemented in Semarang and Yogyakarta from 26 November to 5 December 2016.[6] The equipment for the film was borrowed.[7] As a noncommercial project, the team would not receive any portion of the box office revenue, because of the film's goal of "coloring" the cinema of Indonesia. Ertanto insisted that the film would not have any form of follow-ups.[8] The film's poster was revealed in late September 2018,[9] while the sole trailer was revealed the day after.[10]

Maudy initially declined to be part of the film, but she was persuaded by Ertanto.[11] However, Maudy became ill, halting production for a while.[12] Her husband, Erik Meijer, permitted her to be involved in the project "if it could cure her sickness." Despite that, she was still ill during principal photography.[13] Preparing for her challenging role, she met with senior nuns and observed their daily lives.[14] Ave Maryam is the first film in which Koesnadi is the main character.[15] The consensus to cast Maudy was not based purely on religion;[16] Ertanto says that he realized that Maudy was Muslim after production, after the general public questions Maudy's "true religion" due to her role in the film.[17]

Unlike other films, Ave Maryam's soundtrack is only one song, sung by jazz singer Aimee Saras,[18] composed by The Spouse (also composer of soundtrack for Satan's Slaves), and played by Rooftopsound.[exnote 4] There are two versions in the film: one with a vocals, and one with Saras simply vocalizing the melody of the lyrics. The gospel music[19] is titled "Sacred Heart," based on the Sacred Heart. Inspiration of the song came from Lana Del Rey.[18] There are also several Christian songs sung in the film:

Still using Salt is Leaving the Sea (Vietnamese: Muối đang rời xa biển),[20] the film premiered at the 2018 Hanoi International Film Festival. The film was also screened at the 2018 Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, as well as the 2018 Cape Town International Film Market & Festival.[21] It also screened at the 4th ASEAN International Film Festival & Awards, where it won in the category of Best Editing.[22] It also screened at the CinemAsia Film Festival for two days,[23] the QCinema International Film Festival 2019,[24] and in the Asian Film Festival Barcelona.[25] In April 2019, the 14th Melbourne Indonesian Film Festival (IFF) screened the film, alongside movies like Keluarga Cemara, Night Bus, and Turah.[26] It also screened at Paragon Cineplex, Bangkok on 6 July 2019, for the Bangkok ASEAN Film Festival.[27]

Locally in Indonesia, it was released at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival on 30 November 2018,[28] and later on 14 November 2019 at the Plaza Indonesia Film Festival.[29] It was the closing film for the 2019 Asia Africa Film Festival; tickets were sold out.[30] Theatrically, it was only screened at 39[31] theaters on 11 April 2019, its opening day, in correspondence with other films like Bumi Itu Bulat and Sunyi.[32] It was initially planned to be released in February.[33] The theatrical "gala premiere" was at Epicentrum XXI in Jakarta, 4 April 2019; there was a meet-and-greet and Q&A session before the film started. Audiences of the film were referred to as saksi cinta Maryam (literally "witnesses of Maryam's love story").[34] The film only received 80,000 audiences up to May, with an estimate of 42,044 as of 14 April[35] and 77,000 as of 24 April.[36] If the film was to be a commercial project with money received, it is estimated that it would have produced Rp. 3.2 billion.[37]

Locally, there were two versions distributed by the Indonesian Film Censorship Board (LSF): a cut, 17+ version, and an uncut, 21+ version. The 17+ version was used for theatres, while the 21+ version was used during its screening at film festivals.[29] The uncut duration is 85 minutes, whilst the cut version is 74 minutes long.[38] Many criticized the LSF for cutting important scenes that were deemed explicit, instead of simply blurring them.[39] After a year without information, the film was released on Netflix on 3 September 2020[40] using the LSF's cut version; the general public criticizes Netflix for choosing the cut version when they will not get any legal problems if they release the uncut.[41] The film is rated 16+ on Netflix.

Theme and reception

Maryam looking upwards to the skies whilst crying, in a naked state at a beach during sunset.
A dream scene of Maryam at the beach naked, questioning her faith in serving Jesus. The film was lauded for incorporating both romantic elements and Catholic themes;[42] it was also praised for its "investigative" visuals.[43]

Cecylia Rura of Medcom reckoned that, considering its Catholic theme, the film is "Ertanto's new move in Indonesia's film universe." Ertanto said that he was bored of Indonesian films that consistently bring up Muslim themes, as Islam is dominant in Indonesia.[42]

CNN Indonesia called the film a new "color" on Indonesia's film universe due to its taboo elements. It appreciated the fact that the storyline's morals were given without lecturing or sounding monotone. Ical Tanjung's cinematography is also praised for capturing Semarang beautifully. The ending is also marked as "soul-floating," although its lack of portrayal on Maryam's character was criticized.[44] Gil Perez of CNN Philippines said, "There is not much to say about [it] because not much happens. The film feels like a short film stretched out to an hour and 15 minutes." He wrote that the film "goes for a more somber, internal treatment" to its romance theme. Marking it as "needlessly melancholic," he was skeptical as to whether many scenes in the film were even worthy of inclusion.[45]

Calling it "impressive," Asian Movie Pulse compared Ertanto's directing and Tanjung's cinematography to that of Wong Kar-wai style, and stated, "Ave Maryam is an impressive film, [narratively and technically], and a real treat to watch, while at 85 minutes, has just the right duration to be enjoyed by everyone."[19] Kincir gave it a seven out of ten, praising the film's deep meaning, acting, and visuals, but criticizing its lack of portrayal of Maryam and Yosef's relationship.[46] On the soundtrack, Tempo says that it is a "lust builder," and that the cinematography is "poetic yet violent." It also praised the semiotic elements of the film.[47] The magazine's Astari Pinasthika Sarosa analyzed the changing of Maryam's clothing palette as the film progresses; the design by Dame Sitorus[exnote 4] becomes darker as situations intensify.[48]

Criticizing the film, Muhammad Reza Fadillah of Ulasinema said that, when a character speaks, "there is a weird intonation used. Ertanto clearly wants them to act calm, but intense. Despite that, [the cast] failed to speak appropriately. Joko Anwar's [...] expectedly-authoritative tone turns out create a shattered climate [in the film]." A scene featuring Anwar wearing a G-Shock watch, unveiled three years after the time of the film, "interferes with the time alignment."[43] Student newspaper BPMF Pijar says that there are too much deus ex machinas in the film, and criticized the many unrealistic elements in the film.[49] Tirto.id said that despite its quality, due to scars of restrictions on film themes during the New Order, LSF cutting explcit-yet-important scenes makes the film unrelatable, and said that Maryam's introversion makes her "unsympathetic."[12]

A 1493 Nuremburg Chronicle article, with an illustration of Adam and Eve stealing the forbidden fruit on top of the page, dominating it.
The film has been simlarized with the story of Adam and Eve, when they took the forbidden fruit and defied God's rules.

Andrew Daley of Eastern Kicks compared the film to the story of Adam and Eve, thinking that Ertanto might actually be adapting it. Commenting on the cinematography, he said: "Each frame is lovingly crafted, and this attention to detail [...] only helps to heighten the sense of forbidden love." He showed sentiment over Jerikho's acting, that he "doesn't have much time to breathe or work on his character," and that his character "is an unknown quantity in this film." He goes on to call the film "emotionally destroying; it gradually sweeps you up throughout the swift runtime and then breaks down upon [you]."[7]

The Jakarta Post wrote that the film "carefully takes its audience" to the minds of the characters "with glacial slowness." However, the newspaper said that the film did not give any explanations whatsoever regarding the climate of the displayed situation, concluding with: "This is [...] why Ave Maryam is weak-willed. It's not a thought-provoking movie and it doesn't even masquerade as one. Guilt, because of its cursory treatment, becomes an afterthought when it should have been the crux of the story." Following it, the film's cinematography is praised for "convinc[ing] you of [its] ruminations." It called the acting "decent," and that the supporting characters "make for a roundly well-acted film." It also opined that "Ave Maryam is not a religious film, nor does it pretend to be one."[50]

Media Indonesia wrote that Ertanto "correctly tells the silent tale of a monastery. No music, no talks. Just a rolling life all day long." It also said that "Shots of Maryam staring at the night sky makes it hard to breathe." It said that although the film has realistic elements, Ertanto also purposefully included surreal elements, such as the scene of Maryam opening an invisible window, and Maryam and Yosef's first date.[exnote 5] On its theme of religious tolerance, the film was said to succeed in "asking for tolerance without the need to shout."[51]

Film review website The Display said that the film's ending, the confessional scene, hints a sign of gender disparity in churches. It said that in that scene, "[the nuns] clearly didn't hold as much power to get rid of him or belittle [Yosef's] influence at the church. [His] superior position held them back from expressing their anger, disappointment, or worries [...]. Putting Father Yosef's flirtatious attempt to Sister Maryam in the first place, this kind of treatment was clearly troubling." It called the movie "a strong reminder that women's roles in a religious body are often marginalized by the hierarchy system that often dominated and gives advantages to men."[52]
