Russell Hantz (born October 10, 1972)[1] is an American entrepreneur and television personality, best known for his appearances on the popular U.S. reality show, Survivor.[7] Hantz was the runner-up on Survivor: Samoa,[8][9][10] and the second runner-up on Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains.[9][10][11] He was a favorite among Survivor viewers, who voted him “Sprint Player of the Season” (by which he was awarded a $100,000 cash prize) on both seasons.[10] He is considered by many to be one of the greatest Survivor contestants of all time[12][13][14][15] and received a nomination in the 2010 Teen Choice Awards for his performance on Heroes vs. Villains.[16] Hantz later competed for a third time on Survivor as a contestant on the Redemption Island season, but was eliminated early on.[17]

After his appearances on Survivor, Hantz went on to star alongside his brother, Shawn, on the A&E reality documentary, Flipped Off.[3]

Survivor

Survivor: Samoa

After applying to compete on the show Pirate Master,[18] Hantz was called by casting two years later to appear on Survivor: Samoa, the nineteenth season of the American show. Hantz claims that he was never a fan of Survivor until watching Survivor: Micronesia, which is when he finally "fell in love with it".[19]

After being assigned to the Foa Foa tribe[20] in episode 1, Hantz quickly demonstrated his preference to play through lies and deceit. After making alliances with every person in his tribe, he also attempted to sow discontent by causing havoc whenever possible.[21] After telling a completely false story about being a firefighter who survived Hurricane Katrina, Hantz proceeded to secretly burn socks and empty everyone's canteen water.[22] In an interview with Andy Dehnart, Hantz explained that the idea behind this strategy was to psychologically weaken the other players, enabling him to manipulate them.[23]

Key Moves

In episode 2, Hantz had a feeling that the hidden immunity idol was already hidden within the Foa Foa camp, even before any clues were given. After looking in a large tree, Hantz found the idol and concealed it in his underwear, only revealing it to fellow tribe mate, Jaison.[24]

When the two tribes merged in episode 8, Hantz attempted to use his immunity idol as a bargaining chip with his new tribe mates, hoping to form a coalition against ex-Galu member, Laura. But when Laura won the immunity challenge, the plan was shattered and the word later spread that Hantz possessed an idol. Unaware of anyone's real intentions at Tribal Council, Hantz played his idol, stating, "Everyone knows I have it - I might as well play it." However, no votes were cast against Hantz and the idol was, thus, wasted.[25] However, another idol was hidden back at camp. In the next episode, Hantz found the new immunity idol under a plank bridge, again with no clues. He played it at the next Tribal Council, where he received 7 votes against him. Since all those votes were negated, Kelly, with the next highest vote count (4), was sent to the jury.[26]

In episode 10, Hantz along with 4 other tribe members won a reward and got to fly to a nearby island and have a picnic.[27] They were also given a Palm Pre[28] with which to take pictures. This cell phone also contained clues to the location of yet another hidden immunity idol. Hantz figured out that the immunity idol was under a rock and found it upon returning to camp. Later, former Galu members Shambo and John joined Hantz' alliance and blindsided tribal leader, Laura.[27] Hantz then blindsided John in the next vote.[29]

By the time of the final Immunity Challenge, it was Hantz, Natalie, and Mick up against Brett,[30] who was almost certain to win the Survivor title if he won this immunity.[31] Mick and Natalie lost the challenge, leaving only Hantz and Brett. Hantz ended up winning the challenge and Brett was eliminated at the next Tribal Council.[30]

Final Tribal Council & Reunion

Although Hantz’s tactics were successful enough to get him to the final three, there was a lot of animosity towards him on the jury.[30] Natalie ended up winning Survivor: Samoa, receiving 7 votes, while Hantz received only 2 votes. Hantz offered Natalie $10,000-then $100,000 for the title of Sole Survivor, but she declined.[32]

Although he did not win the one million dollar prize, Hantz did take home the "Sprint Player of the Season" award, which includes a cash prize of $100,000.[10]

Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains

Hantz was invited back for Survivor's 20th season, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, in which he was assigned to the Villains tribe.[33] Since Survivor: Samoa and this season were filmed back-to-back, no other player had had an opportunity to watch Hantz’s gameplay, although they were told by the production crew that Hantz was considered "one of the 5 most notorious male villains of all time". Hantz received a nomination in the 2010 Teen Choice Awards for his performance on this season.[16]

Key Moves

In episode 6, Rob Mariano (aka Boston Rob) organized his alliance to split the vote 3-3 between Hantz and Parvati. Hantz then approached Tyson Apostol and told him he was going to vote out Parvati, which influenced Tyson to change his vote from Hantz to Parvati. At Tribal Council, Hantz revealed a Hidden Immunity Idol and gave it to Parvati. The result ended up being 4 votes for Parvati, 2 votes for Hantz, and 3 votes for Tyson. Since Parvati’s votes were negated, Tyson was eliminated.[34]

Jerri Manthey joined Hantz and his alliance with Parvati and Danielle in the next episode. At the next Tribal Council, Benjamin Wade (aka Coach) targeted Courtney Yates, leaving 4 players in Hantz’s alliance and 3 players in Boston Rob’s alliance, culminating in Rob’s elimination by a vote of 4-3-1.[35]

In episode 8, Villains Sandra Diaz-Twine and Courtney were on the outs on the Villains. In order to save them, Sandra tricked Hantz into believing that Coach was trying to eliminate him, which resulted in Coach's elimination.[36] Meanwhile, the Heroes tribe blindly believed that there was an all-female alliance controlling the Villains tribe, headed up by Parvati.[37] Hero James Thomas (aka J.T.), who had found a hidden immunity idol earlier,[36] gave Hantz the idol during an immunity challenge with instructions to eliminate Parvati. Hantz instead chose to vote out Courtney.[37]

In episode 10 the 5 Villains and 5 Heroes merged into the Yin Yang tribe.[38] Hantz gave Parvati the immunity idol that J.T. had given him, not knowing Parvati already had an idol of her own. Parvati then gave the idols to Jerri and Sandra at Tribal Council. Jerri and J.T. both received 5 votes each, but since Jerri’s votes were negated, J.T. was eliminated.[39]

In episode 11, Danielle found a clue to a hidden immunity idol on a reward and shared it with Hantz, Parvati, and Jerri. Hantz, however, ended up finding the idol for himself. He later showed it to Candice Woodcock, a Hero, to try to strengthen his alliance with her, in hopes of eventually eliminating Sandra. At Tribal Council he played the idol; however, it was of no use, as he received no votes. Hero Amanda Kimmel was eliminated instead.[40]

Episode 12 brought 2 Immunity Challenges and 2 Tribal Councils. At the first Tribal Council, Candice was blindsided. Later in the episode, Hantz won his first Individual Immunity of the season. He then decided to break up the strong alliance between Danielle and Parvati. At Tribal Council, Hantz got Danielle to break down and admit that her alliance with Parvati was stronger than he originally thought. She was then eliminated.[41]

At the final Immunity Challenge, Hantz edged out Parvati and Jerri by a few inches. He then chose to vote out Jerri, assuming he would get her vote at the Final Tribal Council.[42]

Final Tribal Council & Reunion

During the Jury Q&A, Hantz' gameplay was panned by the jurors. Danielle confronted Hantz and told him, "Nobody respects the way that you played the game!" Candice told him that, "You told dirty lies, lies you don't need to tell." Rupert said, "...if you think you should be proud, you're sadly mistaken." Ultimately, Sandra triumphed over Parvati and Hantz in a 6-3-0 vote, winning her second Sole Survivor title.[42]

Fortunately for Hantz, his Reunion experience was similar to his last in that he won the “Sprint Player of the Season” award and $100,000 for the second time.[10]

Survivor: Redemption Island

Hantz was invited back for season 22 of Survivor, Survivor: Redemption Island, to face off with his old rival, Rob Mariano. By a random draw, Hantz joined the Zapatera tribe,[43] which later threw the third immunity challenge in order to vote him out.[44] He was defeated in the next episode by Matt at the Redemption Island duel.[17] Deeply saddened by the loss, Hantz stated that that season was his last on Survivor,[45] although he later indirectly stated at the reunion show that he had changed his mind.[46]

Flipped Off

In 2012, Hantz and is brother, Shawn, were featured on the A&E reality documentary, Flipped Off. The show followed the Hantz brothers and local real-estate agent, Kristen Bredehoeft, as they flipped houses in the Houston area, hoping to make a profit.[47] The show consisted of seven episodes and ran from April 28 to June 16, 2012.

Personal life

Hantz was born on October 10, 1972 and currently resides in Dayton, Texas. A self-made man, he owns an oil company,[1] known as Hantz Tankering Service. He also owns a bar in Lafayette, Louisiana, known as Bootleggers.[48] On Survivor: Samoa, he claimed to have made $1.7 million the year prior.[49] His current net worth is $2 million.[6]

Hantz and his wife, Melanie,[3] have four children,[1] two of whom are twin girls.[19] Hantz' older brother, Shawn,[3] has a son named Brandon,[50] who was a contestant on Survivor: South Pacific[51] and later Survivor: Caramoan.[52] Hantz also has a younger brother, Willie,[4] who competed on Big Brother 14.[53]

Controversies and legal troubles

Arrest

On April 23, 2010, Hantz was arrested for committing an assault while partying near the bar he owns in Lafayette, Louisiana. A woman confronted Hantz, so he allegedly shoved her to the ground. Hantz was released later that day without bail but was given a misdemeanor summons and a scheduled court date.[48]

Information leaks

In late 2010, Survivor fan Jim Early (aka missyae) was sued by Mark Burnett's company, DJB Inc., for successfully spoiling Survivor: Samoa and Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains on Survivor Sucks, a Survivor fan site. After revealing to lawyers that he had received the information from Hantz through e-mails and phone calls, Early's charges were dropped on January 13, 2011. Thus far, no legal action has been taken against Hantz, although players who reveal information regarding a season's results can face a fine of $5 million.[54] Hantz, however, has completely denied the claims against him.[55]
