Unreferenced BLPs

I noticed that you removed a prod from an unreferenced BLP here. Just wanted to let you know that all new BLPs must now have a reference otherwise they should be prodded, no matter how notable they appear. The prod should not be removed unless a reference is added. Regards AIRcorn (talk) 12:37, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Namibian cricketers

No worries. I was wondering when that would happen. At least we will have them better organized now - and now that we've cleared up the case about individuals such as, for example, Andy Fallis, Ettienne Brits and the like, I now understand the difference between those which pass CRIN and which do not.

Cheers - hope you are keeping well - I'm still on semi-permanent sabbatical from WP. Bobo. 00:05, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sportpark Duivesteijn

They're the same ground. See our scorecards from WCL1 in 2010 here and from the Netherlands v Kenya ODIs here. The Duivesteijn name would appear to be incorrect, as our Dutch stats don't have it anywhere. I will check with our Dutch editor to be 100% certain though! Andrew nixon (talk) 16:54, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hold the presses! Latest news from our Dutch editor - Voorburg moved from Duivesteijn a few years ago, and the ground is now no longer in use. So the women's ODIs took place at Duivesteijn, whilst the men's ODIs took place at the new ground. Looks like CA have got the two confused. Andrew nixon (talk) 18:32, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Exact years confirmed. Duivesteijn was last used in 2005, they used a reserve ground at Westvliet in 2006 and started using the main ground there in 2007. Andrew nixon (talk) 21:29, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AA. Would you like to try again with your recent application as the account is no longer dormant? You might add 86.149.110.193 to it too. Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.

Hi AA. Please see "Multiple issues" on the ANI board. ----Jack | talk page 17:36, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've also written to the admin who closed your SPI case in September to see if the case can be reopened. The reason given for not blocking the KB account was that it had been stale for several months, which was correct then. I'll see what transpires there. All the best. ----Jack | talk page 18:03, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Another one

Hi AA. See the usual place for the latest playground behaviour. He's tried to have another go at you as well as me. Sticks and stones, of course, and quite pathetic. Dweller spotted it on his watchlist and immediately applied a long-term block.

Daft must be a very sad and bitter individual to carry on a grudge like this for such a long time. When I was on SPI I looked at his original talk page and he's been at it for nearly four years on and off. Have a look at the post that was sent by one of his former ACS committee colleagues in Jan 2008. I reckon you only need to substitute "WP guidelines" for "schedules agreed with the printers" and it could have been written today. He's still on the ego trip and I just love the one about how his "distinguished expert" pals evidently don't reciprocate: at least two of them were on that committee! But I think the key point is that Daft "likes nothing more than to confront anyone who does not agree with his singular version of events and undoubtedly he will insist that everything written above is either false or unfair". Nail on the head.

Have a good weekend. ----Jack | talk page 05:20, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Troll

Hi AA. You shouldn't have to put up with this so I suggest you revert your talk page to the last responsible edit and summarise with "rv troll (see SPI/Daft) per WP:DENY". The troll in question is of course the usual Daft/Tillman/KestevenBullet playground inhabitant. I'll take it to SPI. ----Jack | talk page 14:46, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I don't think he's near a record. I've seen accounts of some and they look as if they go into dozens or more. Someone like Dweller or Moondyne might know, though. ----Jack | talk page 16:06, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you break the 3rr rule yourself you won't have a leg to stand on. You can file a complaint. Much more effective than getting in an edit war. Alexandre8 (talk) 00:29, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've given up trying to formulate a good article from that one, as those editing it seem to have an agenda against the article subject. Seems a game of fitting in as much "right-wing extremism", "xenophobia" and "racism" remarks as possible, rather than writing a NPOV article. Sad really. Don't be so easily defeated. All you need is to get on top of policy and you can keep the articles stable that way. I got the administrators to review it and they've got him under their eye. Cricketer notability

Is Aneil Nambiar notable per the cricket project guidelines? He does not seem to have done much (well, more than I did in cricket but you know what I mean!). - Sitush (talk) 19:39, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Sitush. Yes, he meets the guideline for having appeared in one List A match, though perhaps for him one to forget - an 8 ball duck, ouch! There's literally hundreds on here who have been done literally nothing, except turn up for the match. Neville Shelmerdine comes to mind. He quite literally turned up, had a field and did nothing else! AssociateAffiliate (talk) 19:49, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture the situation

A Kent cricketer turns up to a County Championship match in 1897. Scores a king pair. His team-mate says: "Eee, lad, ye didna do too well there."

The cricketer replies: "No, but in 110 years time I will have an article on Wikipedia".

New Daft IP

I think it might also be worth looking at Repolemis (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki) who was on the Staffordshire CCC page immediately before the IP and again seems to have been "correcting" your work. I don't have any strong views about North v South players. The match did have more prestige in Victorian times than in the 20th century because they tended to feature the best players around (unlike GvP which featured WG and the best 11 pros around) but it wasn't a series. The games were organised ad hoc, even though they were sometimes held three times in a season. As long as the matches were first-class, there can be no problem in adding the category to players who took part. The purpose of categories is to help readers find relevant articles; they are not there to provide some exclusive list or define an elite. Daft is missing the point of categories as an aid to readers. ----Jack | talk page 20:25, 6 December 2011 (UTC) apologies for the cheap shot - but an encyclopaedia is about accuracy and you are inaccurate - see the many books on that era. Jack is also inaccurate and you will note, he always takes on board my advice. Good luck - I was u/e at 24 during the early 80's - it's no fun. Dr TM Asquith — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.153.176.231 (talk) 21:35, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't pretend to be an expert, I do it as a time killing hobby for a sport I am completely obsessed with, were it not for these nice things one I could have played professionally. I simply create articles, make a body of writing, yes out of CricketArchive stats, as well as anything else I can find. Any more detailed information that needs to be added can be done so by people who have the adequate resources. At 21 I expect myself and User:Bobo192 are the youngest people at WP:CRIC, so obviously in my case I don't have the resources in books or what not to make good articles, which is why I tend to steer clear of expanding the articles of my favourite cricketers like Mead, Kennedy and Newman. As for categories, I dispute they are inaccurate - they're meant to exist as a means of collating articles that link to a main subject. If CA says the match is first-class in terms of N v S, then I shall add the category. I am always going through articles and removing inaccurate categories (players who never played for the team, or whose appearance was at a minor level). Apology accepted, as I too shall apologise for my short fuse earlier. Being unemployed certainly is no fun, particularly when there are literally no jobs in my area - unlike others, I do not believe in social welfare, so you have no worry about your taxes funding my writing of articles as I don't claim a penny. I simply do it to stop my mind going crazy thanks to Stalin making me redundant in the name of non-existant cuts. AssociateAffiliate (talk) 21:54, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

On cricket graphs and BLP

Hi AssociateAffiliate, I saw your requests at WP:CRIC/GR, I'll get to them in the next couple of days. Your request led me to have a look at your user page and I noticed the pictures of prominent politicians who you allege are controlled by some group (sorry, I've forgotten its name). I was wondering if you have considered whether that part of your user page is entirely consistent with the BLP policy? Perhaps if you cast your views as "I believe that ..." rather than presenting them as if they were facts? Just my thoughts, I'm wondering what you think. Regards, EdChem (talk) 04:58, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps I don't think they are inconsitent with the pocily, because it is an user's belief and not opposing to any view, and they have the freedom for such. --Extra 999 (Contact me) 15:31, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Why are you replying as if you are AssociateAffiliate? --Dweller (talk) 16:49, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

AA, there's a bunch of reasons why you need to remove that section, asap, including most notably BLP and WP:UP#POLEMIC. You're lucky EdChem isn't trigger-happy. Please take them down before someone less sensitive files an entirely unnecessary ANI report on you. Cheers, --Dweller (talk) 16:55, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Does a userpage not exist outside of BLP policy? AssociateAffiliate (talk) 16:58, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
WP:BLP is important - you really ought to read it. --Dweller (talk) 17:04, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll remove it to avoid any problems, but I really don't see the major issue. A userpage isn't an article, therefore quite how BLP comes in to it I don't know. I criticise the ICC and Haroon Lorgat on my userpage, never been flagged up or anything because of that. Meh.... you're not Bilderberg yourself are you Dweller?! AssociateAffiliate (talk) 17:09, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see where it says now. Shame, I do love calling out the "evildoers". To be honest, I've never read a single policy, I pick it up as I go along instead. AssociateAffiliate (talk) 17:21, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AssociateAffiliate, firstly let me thank you for acting on the issue I raised, I asked you here because policy encourages us to raise concerns with each other and your response demonstrates why that is desirable – potential problems are addressed simply and quietly without drama – so well done. Let me offer some friendly advice by noting a couple of points you might want to bear in mind for the future (apologies if I'm saying things you already know):

  • It is a commmon misconception that the WP:BLP policy applies only to articles that are biographies; in fact, it applies in all spaces (article, talk, user, WP, etc.) and to anything concerning a living person.
  • The admin community (based on my observations, I am not an admin myself) includes a significant group who are hyper-vigilant and aggresive about BLP issues, and "shoot first, then carpet bomb with nuclear weapons, then ask questions" is not unknown as an approach to resolving perceived problems. It might not be fair, but treading extra carefully around BLP issues is the safer way to go, and maintains your credibility for when you need to discuss the inclusion of critical material about living persons.
  • From my perspective, the big issue with your user page section was not the criticism of living people but the presentation of opinion as if it were fact. You wrote that those people were controlled by the Bilderberg group, which raises a serious BLP issue. Had you written that you believe the Bilderberg group is too influential, and that it's influence extends to persons X, Y, and Z, then that would have been much less problematic (at least from my perspective). Of course a statement like that would be unacceptable in article space without reliable sourcing and consideration of due weight, etc, but there is more leeway allowed in user space. Note that I wouldn't be surprised if others disagreed with me on this view.
  • Short version of the above, criticism is ok when presented as opinion and recognising that others may disagree; criticism presented as assertions of unsupported fact is not ok, and most especially when it is directed at living people.

Regards, EdChem (talk) 03:29, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please allow the AfC editors to review articles before taking further action on them. There was a clear message at the top of the article stating that it was under review. The article had been moved from AfC to mainspace (by me) only a few minutes before you proposed it for deletion! Because the CCL was now into its second season and had received substantial coverage in the Indian media, it seems to adequately meet WP:GNG. Sionk (talk) 19:12, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Some celebrities picking up a cricket bat, having a swing, the Indian press and public going hype crazy hardly fits the bill of cricketing notability. At the end of the day its some actors having a jolly - its not real cricket, mention that they have the odd jolly in their articles, but their cricket and this tournament is in a cricketing sense absolutely non-notable: no matter how many sources are collected from it. AssociateAffiliate (talk) 19:23, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
When the public and press go 'hype crazy' about something, that normally signifies notability, doesn't it? I'd be interested to know what part of Wikipedia's guidance you are using when you make the judgement that certain types of media hype are non-notable? I can easily imagine that when the article was first created its notability was in question. But the tournament seems to be in its second season and extremely popular. Carl Obeysekera

Hi AssociateAffiliate, just because of can find no mention of him on Cricinfo or CricketArchive (I personally don't think that no article or web site can be 100% correct and perfect) doesn't mean that Carl Didn't play first-class cricket as the article states. He did play for the then Ceylon team so as his school mate Ashley Silva (but I couldn't find relevant articles to prove Ashley's). His school is Nalanda College Colombo and check details here Battle of the Maroons. So many other articles can't be wrong about Carl. Hope you understand the situation. Thanking you and keep up the good work.(Masu7 (talk) 22:01, 28 January 2012 (UTC)).[reply]

You haven't gotten my point:

  • Nalanda has never been a first-class team - Nalanda College Colombo is only the school where Carl attended. Nalanda is not a club but a high school in Sri Lanka.
  • The Nondescripts Cricket Club didn't play a first-class match until 1989 - may be right, but Carl was playing cricket for this club.
  • In all likelihood Carl never featured in a major match! - do not agree. then below articles that mentions about Carl, too will have to be proved wrong:
  • "Nalanda Team in 1949". Battle of the Maroons. 2011. Retrieved 2012-01-28.

One memorable creation said "In July 2011 Terry Jenner described Ravi as one of the best spin bowlers in the world". Seems the guy in the picture was having a séance of some kind with Jenner (who had died in May), though for his greatness at spotting talent, this guy wasn't one of them! "If you see this picture, then the article is a hoax!" AssociateAffiliate (talk) 16:49, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Af-Pak cricket

Just wondering: is Afghan cricket team v Pakistan in the UAE in 2011–12 a home series from Afghanistan's point of view, Pakistan's point of view or neither? Which one's the home side? Mar4d (talk) 13:56, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it is neither a home match for any of the two (it is a neutral game), since it is being played in the UAE, nor Afghan or Pak, due to security reasons in both the states. --Extra999 (talk) 14:35, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes and no. While strictly speaking it isn't a home match for either, you could consider Afg as the home team, as Sharjah is their "home ground".[1] It's held ODIs and first-class matches in the past with Afg as the "home" team. AssociateAffiliate (talk) 18:29, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
