IMAGE PERMISSIONS

Almost all of my images have been released into the public domain (the only ones that haven't are derived from other images which had different licensing requirements). If the image description page says it is in the public domain, you may feel free to use it for any purpose or reason. If you need to credit somebody, credit "Wikimedia Commons". Teller-Ulam design

Hello, I see that you are still somewhat active. I am working on a rewrite of Teller-Ulam_design. (See my sandbox at [1] for the work in progress.) I would like to modify your excellent image by closing in the top of the secondary. I am reluctant to tamper with an image that has been a Featured Picture, and I don't know how to use .svg format. The modified image at right is in .png format, which I do know how to use. I don't think my modification adversely impacts the aesthetic of this stunning image. What do you think? The reason for the change is that an essential part of Teller-Ulam is that the interior of the secondary has to be protected against premature heating from the primary. The secondary's heat comes from the sparkplug after compression (radiation implosion). Ideally, the modification could be made in your .svg format and incorporated into [2]. What do you think? In response to your message on my talk page. Thanks for responding. Here are the two .png files which I have uploaded to commons. You can see how I plan to use them in [3]. The text is still under construction. The altered .png images display exactly like the .svg originals, so I don't know why .svg is superior (except I could not have drawn either image from scratch in .png). The only change in the image at right is the cap shielding the fusion fuel from direct impact of the primary radiation. The US News and World Report image of the W-87 was deleted by User Sandstein for copyright issues, so I modified your W-88. As a pair (W-87 & W-88) they make a nice illustration anyway.

Teller-Ulam device firing sequence.png has wrong description

Greetings. Your description for the Teller-Ulam device is wrong, the polystyrene only acts as a support, as it's completely transparent to X-rays. And it would not provide enough pressure to compress an uranium/lead tamper. What compresses the tamper is the evaporation of the surface of the tamper by the X-rays ( a process known as ablation ). HowardMorland's derivative work on one of your creations

I'm not Fastfission, but...

The original Fastfission version is already on commons: [4]

The more detailed version that Howard did is a non-vector scan of John Coster-Mullen's book illustration, which Howard then colorized to match Fastfission's older version here. It's never been in vector format hereabouts.

John Coster-Mullen may have drawn it with a vector drawing program for his book. I could ask him if that's so and if he'd be willing to donate it. But if not, you'll have to redraw from scratch. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 01:05, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Why not just convert it using the original SVG drawing as a starting point? It is not so different from a graphics point of view. The original is based on the one in Chuck Hansen's book with input from what Sublette's Nuclear Weapons Archive had at the time about the sabot. At the very least, the original gives you the LB outline to work with. The internal components are just a series of differently sized squares (from an SVG perspective) so it is not really all that complicated a drawing to replicate. In Inkscape you could import the Howard Morland version and then put the SVG version on top of that, set the opacity to 50% or so, and re-fit it. --Fastfission (talk) 21:41, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Documentary Inquiry - National Geographic Channel

I work as an assistant producer for a television production company called Blink Films based in the UK. We are producing a documentary for the National Geographic Channel and WNET looking at the US/Soviet arms race during the 1950s and 60s. Binding energy per nucleon graphic

This otherwise excellent graphic lacks the nuclide with the highest binding energy per nucleon, Nickel-62. If you were kind enough to include it, I think it would be great. Ni 62 isn't as abundant as Fe 56 so has missed out being included, but you have made exceptions to the abundance criteria for good reasons to include other nuclides such as U 235, so for similar reasons Ni 62 must surely be even more important to include. I note you started the article Project 4.1 and included a quote by Barton C. Hacker:-

This was takem from Hackers Elements of controversy: the Atomic Energy Commission and radiation safety in nuclear weapons testing, 1947-1974 (Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1994) pp. 226-228.
I can't find a copy to check the quote - did he really say "responsed" or is this a typo?
