Frequently asked questions

  • When I start it up I get one of the following errors:
    "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.", or
    "To run this application, you must first install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework..."
    This error means your computer does not have the .NET framework version 2 installed properly. You can choose from various versions for download here, or you can run Microsoft Update and select version 2 of the .Net framework from the "Optional Updates" section, if you want the choice made for you.
  • Does AWB run on Linux or Mac?
    Linux, a qualified yes. Mac, not natively but via virtualisation.
    AWB runs reasonably under Wine. See details here
    AWB might also run under Mono. See here for a status report of AWB vs Mono v2.6.
A native version, PyAutoWikiBrowser (screenshots here), based on Python, is being developed separately for Unix-like systems.
On the Mac, AWB is not natively available, but an option is to use virtualisation with Parallels Desktop for Mac (subject to meeting supported operating systems requirements) and then run Microsoft Windows virtually with AWB as the Windows instructions above. Note this option is not free, as a license is required for both Parallels Desktop for Mac and Microsoft Windows. An alternative visualization method is to use the free VirtualBox, see also Comparison of platform virtual machines.
  • Does AWB work on other projects/languages?
    Many Wikimedia projects and languages are supported, see the "User and project preferences" option in the general menu. Other languages will be added on request, though at the moment the interface is always in English. You are also able to use AWB with third-party wikis: Options > Preferences > Site, you can change the wiki there. The wiki must support the Bot API required by AWB. This means that it should have latest HEAD version of MediaWiki or something close to that. The wmf-deployment branch is also recommended, as this is what is currently live on WMF sites.
  • What interwiki link order does AWB use?
    The software reads the interwiki sort order from Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/IW, which is generally mirrored to reflect the order at m:Interwiki sorting order.
  • AWB puts stubs after categories, though categories are always rendered the last by MediaWiki?
    According to WP:STUB#Categorizing stubs, By convention they are placed at the end of the article, after the External links section, any navigation templates, and the category tags, so that the stub category will appear last. If your wiki uses another order, please let us know here.
  • I don't like or use Internet Explorer; please use Firefox instead.
    AWB does not use Internet Explorer per se. It does, however, use the same web browser control (MSHTML) as Internet Explorer; the equivalent Firefox component does not provide the needed functionality.
  • How do I open the page in another browser if I can't use the one in AWB?
    Right click on the edit box in the bottom right side of your screen. Select "Open page in browser".
  • How do I edit a page that doesn't exist?
    Uncheck "Ignore non existing pages" in the "Skip articles" box.
  • How do I skip certain articles?
    Use the "Skip if contains" and "Skip if doesn't contain" on the "Skip" tab
  • Can't you leave up a "stable" version, so I don't have to download new versions?
    It is important to keep people up to date with the latest versions, because their use of the software doesn't just affect them, but the whole of Wikipedia. As any bugs that remain will be trivial; hopefully releases won't be too frequent.
  • How can I stop AWB clicking when it changes pages?
    This is a Windows sound theme setting. This page explains how to turn off the clicking sound.
    Alternatively, delete the following key from the Windows registry:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\Explorer\Navigating\.Current
  • AWB randomly crashes upon page load on my system, and I always use a browser other than Internet Explorer when using Wikipedia.'
    You may have installed custom scripts incompatible with IE. Wrap the contents of your monobook.js into conditional:
               //Detect IE5.5+
               if (navigator.appVersion.indexOf("MSIE")==-1)
               {
                   // Previous contents go here
                   ....
               }
  • I get Just In Time Debugger Messages when loading AWB/loading pages.
    In Internet Explorer, go to Tools --> Options --> Advanced. Make sure 'Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer)' and 'Disable Script Debugging (Other)' Are both checked. Press apply and close.
  • Why does AWB run very, very slowly if I try to make changes in the edit window on larger pages, especially pages with long lists or tables?
    If running on Windows, exit the Speech Recognition software that is built into some versions of Windows; don't just turn it 'Off', you must 'Exit' the software if you have started up Speech Recognition.
  • When I do a clean install of AutoWikiBrowser the application seems to find old setting data somewhere. I'd like to do a really clean install. Any ideas?
    Clean up your registry and remove the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data\AutoWikiBrowser" (Windows XP) or "C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\AutoWikiBrowser\" (Windows 7). Note that the application data folder may be hidden.
  • AWB prompts that there is a newer version but won't update
    Check the version number of your AWBUpdater.exe. The current version is 2.0.0.9. If you have an older version, you have to download the latest AWB version and make a clean install.
  • Which .NET Framework version do I have?
    You can find your .NET Framework version in Help --> About box.
  • Where are the default settings stored?
    • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\AutoWikiBrowser
    • Windows Vista and Windows 7: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\AutoWikiBrowser\Default.xml
  • I cannot copy text from the diff window using the Control+C keyboard shortcut.
    You must have Microsoft.mshtml.dll available for AWB to use for this functionality to work. You can try downloading the file (there are a number of third party websites offering DLL file downloads) and putting it in the same folder as AutoWikiBrowser.exe. This is reported not to work for all users, presumably due to .NET Framework problems.
  • Is there any way to set AWB to not use https? (GFW blocks 443 port)
    In preferences, set project to "custom". Set the left box to http. In the webpage box, type en.wikipedia.org/w/ (English Wikipedia) or zh.wikipedia.org/w/ (Chinese Wikipedia). Note that leaving off the /w/ will result in a "root element missing" error.

AWB: mass category creation

Can AWB create mass categories? E.g. i need to create categories from ”Football clubs established in 1900” to ”Football clubs established in 2020”. Each category must have 2 categories- parents, one stable ”Football clubs establishements by year” and second incrementable ”Establishements in {{year}}", where {{year}} has value from 1900 to 2020, for each new category incrementation +1. Its possible to do that with AWB? XXN (talk) 19:50, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@XXN:, yes, check out CSV Loader. You will need to file a BRFA and get approval before you start creating the categories. Ganeshk (talk) 22:42, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but i dont understand how to use your plugin)) I know about bot policy, i will work on ro.wiki, i have already submitted an request for approval. XXN (talk) 23:35, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please follow the steps in this walk through. Please leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions or run into any issues. Ganeshk (talk) 14:17, 27 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

section parameter in cite web template and AWB alert

Hi,

I just reformatted a bunch of citations on amphetamine for consistency. I noticed that my use of "| section=XYZ" in template:cite web generates an error alert in AWB even though the template itself accepts the parameter and doesn't display an error notice (in refs or hidden categories). Just thought I'd put this notice here. Just to provide an example[1][2] on this page:

Update to the live CS1 module week of 2013-11-03

Toward the end of this week I propose to update Module:Citation/CS1 to match Module:Citation/CS1/sandbox (diff) and Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration to match Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration/sandbox (diff). This update changes several things:

  1. Added deprecated parameter tracking for deprecated parameters: Adds pages to Category:Pages containing cite templates with deprecated parameters when they contain the parameters |month=, |coauthor=, and |coauthors=
  2. Extract common code from checkisbn() and issn() into new function is_valid_isxn(): Checkdigit calculation code for ISSN and for ISBN-10 is esentially the same so created a single function to do that
  3. Migrate cite thesis: discussion
  4. ISBN 13 checked for 978 and 979 prefixes: discussion
  5. Migrate cite techreport: discussion
  6. Date validation: discussion – by far the largest, this change checks dates for format compliance with MOS:DATE, checks date validity (no June 31, etc), allows year disambiguation in CITEREF identifiers when referenced authors have multiple works published in the same year without the need to use both |date= and |year=, and does not corrupt the COinS metadata.

Using AWB w/ Proxy - 407 Error

I'm trying use AWB with a proxy.pac. I can access the wiki via IE and Chrome with no issue. My understanding is that AWB pulls proxy settings from IE, so if IE works then so should AWB.

This however is not the case; I, like others receive the following 407 error:

Network access error
---------------------------
The remote server returned an error: (407) Proxy Authentication Required.
---------------------------

I've seen a few discussions (407 Error), (AWB Proxy) (ending circa 2011), a seemingly resolved bug report (407 Error - March 2012) and an open feature request (Proxy Authentication - Oct 2011).

My main question is what is the true status of this issue. Has it been fixed/implemented or not? If not, someone seemed to referencespeak to a possible workaround by hard-coding the authentication into the ApiEdit.cs class, but it was said one shouldn't do this.

All these conversations are a year old so does anyone know of any additional information or a "safe" workaround. Or simply if currently it can not be done. If that's the case I would request it be added to the FAQs (until feature is added) due it being quite foundational to whether or not a person is able to utilize the software.
Thanks much,

Same problem here, plus I get a bug report.

Various namespaces

Applying the rules to all subject namespaces (see the chart at Wikipedia:Namespace) would further help to prevent editors and readers from being wrongly influenced by incorrect usage. (Some subject pages in the "Wikipedia" namespace are actually used as talk pages, so care needs to be taken to avoid them.) Wikipedia:Database reports/Most-watched pages by namespace seems to be a good place to start.

Automatic edit summary

Is the edit summary, "clean up using AWB" something that is automatically generated? If so, I found it to be somewhat disingenuous when I saw it recently. Rather than clean up, an editor had added Persondata. While that was definitely the right thing to do, and a good use of AWB, it's my opinion that the edit summary should have been clearer about what was going on. Ardric47 (talk) 01:21, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ardric47, that was not an automatic edit summary. Edit summaries are entered by the editor. The only thing AWB tacks on is "using AWB" to show the edit was done using a tool. (AWB being the tool, the editor may or may not be a tool) Everything before "using AWB" is entered by editor. If a user is using a beta version of AWB, the "version" number is also given... "using AWB (9643)". You will need to contact the editor about the edit summary. Bgwhite (talk) 02:57, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you! Ardric47 (talk) 04:29, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Checking template parameter against article title?

Is there a way to check if a specific template parameter is identical to the article's title in a RegEx (or any other way for that matter)? I'm going to try to replace instances of {{{diversity_link}}} in Taxobox which just link back to the article to prevent it from breaking (see Template talk:Taxobox#Diversity link) after putting in a fix. I can see it's possible to do the opposite (i.e. add the article title to the replacement text) by matching the title, and apparently there used to be a bug which must have been doing essentially the same thing... but are there any magic words or equivalents for use within search strings, or does anyone know another way to do this? ‑‑xensyriaT 12:00, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
