The 2017–18 season is the 34th season in the history of Aizawl Football Club and their third in the I-League, India's top flight professional football league. The season covers the period from 1 June 2017 to 31 May 2018.

The club entered the current I-League season as the defending champions after wining previous season and finished their campaign in fifth position. They reached finals of Mizoram Premier League but lost to Chhinga Veng FC to settle for runners-up.[3] They were knocked out of 2018 AFC Champions League by Zob Ahan in Play-off round[4] but were qualified to 2018 AFC Cup. They were knocked out of Super Cup in quarter-finals by East Bengal. They finished last in their group in AFC Cup and didn't advance to knockouts.[5]

Season overview

June

End of the loan and no extension on contract led Albino Gomes, Ashutosh Mehta and Jayesh Rane return to their clubs for this season.[6]

East Bengal signed Mahmoud Amnah, Lalramchullova[7] and Aizawl's promising winger, Brandon Vanlalremdika for 2017–18 season.[8]

On 20 June, their former coach, Khalid Jamil, moved to Kolkata power-house East Bengal.[9]

On 20 June, Aizawl signed their former defender and ONGC captain, Lalchhuanawma Varte as their first signing of this season.[10]

On 24 June, Mohun Bagan announced signing of Aizawl's defender, Kingsley Obumneme for 2017–18 season.[11]

On 26 June, Mohun Bagan announced signing of Aizawl's defender, Kamo Stephane Bayi for 2017–18 season.[12]

Fellow Mizo outfit Chinnga Veng FC signed Aizawl's goal-keeper, Zothanmawia ahead of this season's Mizoram Premier League.

July

Kareem Omolaja signed by Aizawl FC from Minerva Punjab F.C.

On 3 July, Aizawl signed their former midfielder, David Lalrinmuana from East Bengal who played for them in 2012 when club played in I-League 2nd Division.[13]

On 9 July, East Bengal signed Aizawl's winger, Laldanmawia Ralte for 2017–18 season.[14]

On 14 July, Aizawl welcomed Nigerian defender Kareem Omolaja from Minerva Punjab for 2017–18 season.[15]

On 23 July, ISL Draft was conducted in which Kerala Blasters picked Lalthakima and Lalruatthara[16] and Bengaluru picked Zohmingliana Ralte.[17]

On 26 July, Aizawl have roped in former Indian defender Shylo Malsawmtluanga from Bhawanipore F.C. who is also from Mizoram and has played a big role in inspiring a generation of Mizo footballers.[18]

On 28 July, Aizawl have roped in Paulo Menezes as their coach who took over the charge of constructing the team for I-league title defence.[19]

August

On 9 August, Aizawl announced signing of former defender and local boy, Lalrozama Fanai from Fateh Hyderabad F.C..[20]

On 18 August, Aizawl signed Japanese forward, Yugo Kobayashi from Songkhla United F.C. and also completed signing of custodian, Avilash Paul from Pune F.C..[21]

On 20 August, Aizawl further reinforced their squad roping in Ivorian striker, Léonce Dodoz Zikahi who played for Mohammedan Sporting in I-League 2nd Division last year.[22]

On 24 August, Aizawl have signed Afghan defender, Masih Saighani from German club, Türk Gücü Friedberg.[23]

On 26 August, Aizawl bolster squad by signing Romanian striker, Andrei Ionescu from FC Voluntari for the season ahead.[24]

On 28 August, Aizawl announced their squad for Mizoram Premier League.[25]

On 31 August, Aizawl started their 2017–18 season with an away match against Ramhlun North in 2017-18 Mizoram Premier League. Aizawl gave away early lead to home team with Lalliansanga scoring for Ramhlun North in 12th minute. They equalized later in 35th minute with a strike from Jojo. No goals in the second half meant both teams shared spoils in the match.

September

On 1 September, Aizawl signed Liandala Fanai from Chennai City F.C. for their upcoming season.[26]

On 8 September, Aizawl drew their second match against Chanmari with a goal scored on both sides. Lalmuanawma scored for Chanmari on 26th minute and Lalrinmuana equalized in the injury time of first half.[27]

On 15 September, Aizawl played their first home match against Chhinga Veng. This match again ended in a draw maintaining unbeaten streak by Aizawl but not securing any win. Khawlhring opened the account for Aizawl in 19th minute but Malsawmfela equalized for Chhinga Veng in 3 minutes. Lalhriatrenga scored an own-goal in 36th minute giving an advantage to Chhinga Veng by half-time. Aizawl lifted their spirits immediately after half-time with Jojo scoring a goal for them in 47th minute.[28]

On 18 September, Aizawl lost their first match in the tournament against Chanmari West 0–1 in an away match. Lalremruata scored the only goal of the match for Chanmari West in 74th minute to take lead for home team and also ending unbeaten streak by Aizawl. This loss placed Aizawl in 7th position with just 3 points in 4 matches.[29]

On 21 September, Aizawl secured their first win of the tournament with a dominating win over Mizoram Police FC with scoreline reading 6–1 at the end of the match. Rochharzela scored first hat-trick for Aizawl in the tournament with Hmingthanmawia, Jaryan and Jojo scoring a goal each. Omolaja scored the lone goal for Mizoram Police as a consolation in the match.[30]

On 28 September, Aizawl secured second consecutive win in the tournament beating Dinthar. They handed a double blow to Dinthar before half time with Omolaja and Jojo scoring in the first half in a space of 2 minutes. Dinthar tried to come back into the game but Lalmuankima scored third goal for Aizawl securing the 3 available points of the match. These 2 wins placed Aizawl in 3rd position and ending September on a high note.[31]

October

On 3 October, Bethlehem started the match well keeping Aizawl in pressure by scoring first in 36th minute. Dawngzela opened account for Bethlehem. They doubled their lead just before half-time with Ramengmawia scoring their second. They maintained their lead in the second-half winning the match by 2–0.[32]

After a humiliating defeat in their first meeting of this tournament, Mizoram Police came back strongly on 13 October in their second meeting to draw the match by 2–2 against Aizawl. The loss and draw meant that Aizawl dropped a position in points table to 4th with 6-matches remaining in this League Stage.

Aizawl came back to their winning form beating Chanmari by 3–1 on 19 October. Malsawmzuala scored first goal for Chanmari in 20th minute pushing Aizawl into pressure. But, Aizawl responded back strongly handing double blow to Chanmari with Lalnunfela and Ionescu scoring in a space of 4 minutes. This placed Aizawl in a good position at half-time. They never allowed Chanmari for a comeback with Lalnunfela scoring his second in the match in second half.[33]

On 24 October, Aizawl secured commanding victory with a 5–1 win over Bethlehem. Lalmuankima opened the account for Aizawl in 17th minute but Lalnuntluanga equalized for Bethlehem after 3 minutes. But, Aizawl came back to lead with a goal from Lalrinmuana in 25th minute. They doubled their lead in the first half with a goal from their international defender, Saighani. Aizawl took control over the match in second half scoring 2 goals, one each from Lalrinmuana and Rochharzela.[34]

On 26 October, Aizawl were successful in stopping the in-form Chhinga Veng with a 2–0 win. Lalmuankima scored the first goal of the match for Aizawl in 16th minute. Chhinga Veng tried to comeback into the match but couldn't break the Aizawl defence. Aizawl doubled their lead in the dying minutes with a goal from Jojo and ending October on a high note.[35]

November

On 1 November, Aizawl completed their first double of the tournament over Dinthar with a 4–0 victory. Lalrinmuana took the lead for Aizawl in 9th minute starting the goal-spree in the match. Later, Lalmuankima and Ionescu scored a goal each with Aizawl ending first half with a 3-goal lead. Lalnunfela scored in the second half to seal the victory for Aizawl. With this win, they secured their place in semifinals.[36]

On 6 November, AFC License was awarded to Aizawl FC allowing it to play in AFC Club competitions for 2017–18 season.[37] India did not have a direct-entry spot in the AFC Champions League but with the rise in club-rankings resulted current I-League champions, Aizawl FC to become first Indian club to play in AFC Play-off round.[38]

On 7 November, Aizawl signed former East Bengal F.C. and NEROCA F.C. custodian, Arup Debnath as backup to their first choice player between the sticks.[39]

On 10 November, Aizawl secured a 2–0 victory over Chanmari West scoring a goal in both halves. Saighani opened the account for Aizawl in 25th minute. Later, Lalnunfela scored the late goal in 88th minute to double the lead for Aizawl. With this win, they secured their position in top-2 in League Stage.[40]

On 17 November, Aizawl lost their last game in the League Stage of the tournament against Ramhlun North. Both teams battled hardly in the game but it was Lalremruata who finally sealed the match for Ramhlun North scoring the winner in the dying minutes of the match to keep their hopes of advancing to semifinals alive.[41]

On 23 November in MPL Semifinal first leg, Mizoram Police scored first in the 7th minute through Lalrinpuia. But Aizawl responded back strongly with tall Afghan defender Saighani scored the equalizer for Aizawl in the 22nd minute. Later, Lalhriatrenga put the I-League champion club ahead in the 85th minute. Last minute equalising goal scored by Police striker Lalfakzuala makes the tie all square again.[42]

Aizawl announced arrival of V Laltanpuia and Lalthathanga Khawlhring on loan from Mizoram Police FC and NorthEast United FC respctively for 2017–18 season.

Aizawl started off the I-League with a 2–2 draw against East Bengal on 28 November in an away encounter. Kolkata giants drew first blood when Katsumi’s corner was deflected by Brandon and Ferreira headed in at the far post. Later, Katsumi doubled East Bengal’s lead when Avilash was left wrong-footed from the initial shot taken by Rafique which took a wicked deflection off Katsumi and beat the hapless goalkeeper. Aizawl pulled one back within two minutes when David curled a free-kick inside the box which was headed in by Lalnunfela. Aizawl found an equaliser in the dying minutes of the match when William scored his second from a Khawlhring corner.[43][44]

December

On 4 December in MPL Semifinal second leg, it was Aizawl who took the lead on the 14th minute with a strike from Lalmuankima. Mizoram Police FC responded three minutes later when Lalbiakhlua equalised from a Valpuia delivery. Both teams searched in vain for the winner in the second half. It came down to a penalty shootout in the end with Aizawl finding the net each time while Zomuanpuia blazed his effort over the bar for Mizoram Police FC to give the two-time MPL champions a 5–3 shootout victory.[45]

On 8 December in MPL Final, Chhinga Veng FC enjoyed a bright start with Laldampuia proving to be a handful early on forcing a good save from Avilash. And he provided the breakthrough in the 5th minute providing a delicious ball to Malsawmtluanga who placed a fine header in Aizawl’s net. Aizawl skipper Lalrinmuana almost struck an equaliser with a brilliant free-kick at the other end while Saighani also came close. The I-League champions did improve in the second half but missed a great chance to equalize late on as Saighani was gifted a great opportunity only for him to drill his effort right in front of Chhinga Veng FC’s custodian Zothanmawia. This made Aizawl settle as Runners-up.[3][46]

Rochharzela was awarded the Best Young Player and H. Lalmuankima was awarded Best Forward of the Tournament for Mizoram Premier League.[47][48]

On 13 December, Aizawl clinched their first victory of the season scoring late winner against Churchill Brothers at Aizawl. They missed services of their top-scorer Lalnunfela for the match due to an ankle injury. The hosts were in complete control of the game and enjoyed lion's share of possession right from the start but lack of finishing haunted them. They also had to replace Lalrinmuana early in the match due to hamstring niggle.[49] It was only in 88th minute that Aizawl could finally register a winning goal when Dodoz assisted Kobayashi whose left-footed shot sailed past Churchill Brothers' custodian.[50][51]

On 18 December, Aizawl's 616-day unbeaten run at home in I-League ends after losing their first home match since April 2016 to Shillong Lajong. After an array of chances, score stood at 0–0 at the end of first half. But Reds outclassed home side in second half. Al Hagri's shot inside the box was blocked by the Aizawl's boys but the ball fell to Lajong's winger Tlang, who calmly curved the ball towards the far side of the net and scored winning goal of the match.[52][53]

On 27 December, Aizawl halt Minerva Punjab's unbeaten run with a 2–1 crucial victory in Aizawl. The ball from Lalrinmuana’s corner was guided to the far post of Minerva’s goal by defender Omolaja to leave goalkeeper Dagar completely stranded. Dodoz danced past Minerva’s defender and slide the ball to Romanian midfielder Ionescu who made no mistake as he slotted home his first goal of the season. Minerva pulled one back in the added time as Khosla made the best out of the defensive lapses.[54][55]

On 31 December, Aizawl beat debutants Gokulam Kerala 0–2 in an away encounter. A low cross from left-flank by Hmunmawia took deflection off Gokulam's Addo to Kobayashi whose shot put ball into the net in the 45th minute. After the changeover, Aizawl took only seven minutes to double the lead courtesy Ionescu’s brilliant effort.[56]

January

On 1 January, Aizawl announced signing of the Mizo forward, Lalkhawpuimawia from Chhinga Veng FC.[57]

On 6 January, Indian Super League side, FC Goa signed Lalmuankima in a free transfer.[58][59]

On 7 January, Aizawl went down 2–0 to Mohun Bagan in an away encounter which was also the first match in 2018. The first goal came in dramatic fashion when Saighani outstretched his leg to deny Dicka a finish on the cross but ended up tapping the ball into his own goal. Dicka doubled the lead for Mariners making the best use of a long ball as he dribbled past an advancing Avilash on the left before slotting it home with his left foot.[60]

On 13 January, Aizawl returned to winning ways by comfortably outclassing Chennai City 2–0 in home encounter. Kobayashi opened the scoring when he converted a penalty after Chennai City's Shumeyko handled the ball while trying to stop David inside the box. In 33rd minute, David latched on to a square pass from Ionescu and fired a left-footer which took slight deflection of Dharmaraj before rolling home to double the lead to Aizawl.[61]

On 16 January, Aizawl played out a goal-less draw against East Bengal in a home encounter. Aizawl missed out their chances in first half with Jaryan's shot flew just wide of the post and Lalnunfela failed to connect Zohmingmawia's pass from six yards. In second half, Vanlalremdika's curled effort from outside of the box was miraculously palmed away by Aizawl's custodian Avilash. Aizawl substitute Lalkhawpuimawia could not get his head to Laldinliana’s cross in final 10 minutes to seal the match.[62][63]

On 20 January, Aizawl lost their way as away side NEROCA came from behind in second half to win 1–2 in the game. Nigerian defender Omolaja leapt above NEROCA's defenders to score for home side with a cross from Ionescu after Zohmingmawia's corner was cleared from initial danger by Kallon. Chidi scored the equaliser in the 65th minute after a wonderful team game broke Aizawl defence. Turkovic stunned Aizawl in the dying embers of the game when he perfectly converted Biakzara’s cross from the left wing.[64]

On 25 January, Aizawl dropped points to Mohun Bagan in a home tie as match was drawn at 1–1 with Aizawl dominating the match from start to finish. Aizawl’s forward Kobayashi was booked for a challenge on Obumneme in the first minute. Jaryan chased down every ball in the middle and Dodoz tormented Bagan’s backline. All significant action on the field though, took place in the final 20 minutes as Khawlhring had put the home side ahead in the 73rd minute before Bagan’s substitute Manandeep restored parity from the penalty spot just five minutes later. In the dying minutes of the match while Aizawl was desperately searching for winner, Jaryan was shown a straight red by refree for a stomp on defender Gharami as the match ended in stalemate.[65]

On 30 January, Aizawl failed to qualify for the AFC Champions League after losing 3–1 to Iran’s Zob Ahan in an away encounter in play-off round from West Region. Zob Ahan struck in the 3rd minute through a spot-kick by Rajabzadeh when Lalrosanga fouled Tabrizi inside penalty box. Aizawl gradually started to make in-roads when Ionescu connected cross delivered by Laldinliana from centre of the box to beat Zob Ahan custodian Mazaheri. In 83rd minute, Tabrizi’s header put them Zob Ahan ahead. Meneses’ men were put under more misery when Tabrizi scored for the second time heading in from close range to the bottom left corner after latching onto a cross from Hosseini. This loss Aizawl gets knocked out from AFC Champions League but gain direct entry into Group E of AFC Cup.[4][66]

February

On 3 February, Aizawl drew with Chennai City 1–1 in an away encounter. Ionescu got past his marker on the right before getting into the box and playing a good cross that picked out Kobayashi who tucked a neat finish into the net giving Aizawl lead in 3rd minute. But they lost many chances to extend their lead as both Ionescu and Lalrinmuana hit post. However, Chennai City restored parity in the 73rd minute when Beautin cut onto his right before curling the ball beautifully into the top right corner.[67]

On 6 February, 10-man Aizawl lost 0–1 to Churchill Brothers in an away encounter as they scored a solitary goal through Koffi in 22nd minute. Nicholas on receiving a long ball deceived defender Laldinliana and crossed the ball for an unmarked Koffi to send it into the net with a deft placement. Aizawl came back strongly in the last quarter but their search for equaliser ended when they were reduced to 10 men in the last ten minutes as Lalrosanga was shown red card for a deliberate foul on Ceesay who was about to score.[68]

On 10 February, Aizawl held NEROCA to a goalless draw in a closely contested and tactical away match where both sides failed to score even though there were many clear chances. NEROCA had two clear chances, one at the stroke of half time, which Turković muffed, and another deep into the match that was wasted by Chidi. Aizawl striker Zikahi had a golden chance to hand his side full three points in the second minute of the stoppage time, but he shot wide.[69]

On 12 February, Aizawl announced that they parted ways with their head coach, Paulo Menezes after seven consecutive winless streak in their on-going I-League campaign.[70][71] They announced Santosh Kashyap as their incoming coach.[72]

On 15 February, Aizawl welcomed back Lalchhawnkima who joined on loan from Mumbai City FC.[73]

On 16 February, Aizawl drew 2–2 against a resilient Indian Arrows in an away match. Ionescu produced brilliant delivery for Saighani who slotted it past a helpless Prabhsukhan in 40th minute. Indian Arrows was quick to find the equalizer on the 48th minute as Ashish found Lalrindika with an exquisite delivery, who foxed his marker to trigger a shot at the bottom right corner which beat a diving Avilash. Aizawl continued to pile pressure and in 54th minute, Dodoz pierced the net after latching on to a pass from inside the box by Zohmingmawia. The blue colts finally equalized in the dying minutes when skipper Amarjit converted penalty after Lalrosanga brought down Rahul inside the box.[74]

On 18 February ahead of match against Shillong Lajong, Aizawl coach Santosh Kashyap announced that their foreign recruits, Kobayashi and Omolaja had been ruled out for the rest of the season due to injuries.[75]

On 19 February, Aizawl bowed down 2–1 to Shillong Lajong at Shillong in an away North-East derby. In the 42nd minute, Shillong took lead when Tlang connected with Gurung’s cross from the left. Shillong doubled the lead in 73rd minute when Jagne got better of Jaryan and made his way into the box before poking the ball into the net. In the dying moments of the match, Nidhin failed to collect Ionescu’s shot which allowed Dodoz to shoot the ball into the target from the loose clearance.[76]

Aizawl finally ended 8-match winless streak with a 3–0 win over Indian Arrows. Aizawl needed only seven minutes to score the first goal of the match when Lalkhawpuimawia skipped past Stalin and shot towards goal but Arrows' custodian Prabhsukhan failed to grab as it found its way to Ionescu who easily found the back of the net three yards out. In the 16th minute, Lalkhawpuimawia slipped from the guard of the Arrows defenders, his first shot hit both the woodwork but on rebound, he didn’t make any mistake to double the lead. To confirm three points for Aizawl, Lalkhawpuimawia scored his second in the 87th minute when he calmly tucked the ball in the back of the net after Dodoz provided him with a lovely pass from the back.[77]

On 26 February, Aizawl lost 2–0 to table-toppers, Minerva Punjab in an away game where Minerva enjoyed lion's share of possession with Aizawl's attack coming from Ionescu. Akash broke deadlock for Minerva in 50th minute on rebound after Chencho's shot after receiving pass from Opoku was stopped by Avilash. Minerva sealed the game with a strike late into the second half injury time when Opoku's header off a Kamalpreet free-kick landed on Armand's path.[78]

March

On 2 March, Aizawl ended their I-League campaign in fifth position with a convincing 3–1 win over Gokulam Kerala. Al-Ajmi put Gokulam ahead by converting penalty kick in 25th minute after Kisekka's shot found Lalchhawnkima's arm inside the box. At the hour stroke, Gokulam's keeper Bilal slipped Albert's cross which fell to Dodoz who completed the shot to level for Aizawl. Dodoz dodged past Rashid and wrong-footed the goalkeeper to rattle the net once again in the 74th minute. Aizawl scored their third goal of the match four minutes later when Khawlhring's corner was weakly fisted away by Bilal before it fell right in the path of Lalkhawpuimawia who hammered it past Gokulam defenders to notch his third goal of the season.[79][80]

By the virtue of finishing inside top-6 in I-League, they got selected to knock-out phase of Super Cup.[81] The draw for Round of 16 in Super Cup were announced on 12 March and Aizawl was drawn against ISL outfit, Chennaiyin.[82] Aizawl announced their 25-man squad for Super Cup with 4 foreigners.[83]

On March 5, Aizawl signed back H. Lalmuankima from FC Goa to bolster their squad for upcoming Super Cup.[84]

Aizawl announced their 26-man squad on March 11 for their upcoming AFC Cup group stage matches.[85][86]

On 14 March, Aizawl suffered 1–3 defeat to home team, New Radiant in their opening game of 2018 AFC Cup. Aizawl drew first blood when Hmunmawia, with his left foot, sent the ball to the left corner of the empty net. With five minutes to go in the first half, Ashfaq slotted in a right-footer into the corner of the net from Abdulla's cross from the right for equalizer. Aizawl's task became tougher when Hmunmawia was sent off for bringing down substitute Guillem in the 74th minute. In 77th minute, Saleem's cross was then headed in by Ashfaq as the ball bounced off the ground, hit the bar and entered the net before the Aizawl defence could react. Ashfaq completed the hat-trick when he tapped in with his left foot after Fasir headed the ball down for the striker inside the box with five minutes to go.[87]

On 31 March, Aizawl knocked out ISL Champions Chennaiyin in pre-quarter finals of Super Cup edging them in penalties 5–3 after being tied at 2–2 at the end of extra-time in a close encounter. Aizawl began the match with intent scoring first in 22nd minute through Ionescu whose shot deflected past Karanjit to find the back of the net. However, Alves came to Chennaiyin's rescue netting equalizer in 89th minute from close range through Thoi's rebound shot from goal post. Aizawl took lead again in first minute of extra time through Ionescu again when he latched onto a low cross, cut past defender and curled ball past Karanjit. A mistake from Aizawl defence gifted Chennaiyin their second equalizer when D Singh's low effort from distance went past crowded defence to back of the net. Aizawl started first in penalties and converted each of their share but penalty miss from Rafi for Chennaiyin handed Aizawl their deserved victory.[88][89][90]

April

On 5 April, Aizawl lost to Bengaluru 1–3 in a home match admist rainy conditions at Guwahati. Aizawl made an early breakthrough in 5th minute through Dodoz as the ball ricocheted in off the shin of Aizawl's striker after a clearance from Bengaluru goalkeeper Ralte. At the stroke of half-time, Bengaluru finally equalized when Segovia coolly slotted home from a penalty that was awarded after Dodoz handled the ball in the box. Bengaluru took the lead in 63rd minute through Bheke, who headed in George's teasing cross. The visitors then went 3–1 up in the 77th minute, when substitute Lalhlimpuia sent a low strike past Aizawl custodian Avilash.[91]

On 8 April, Aizawl lost 0–1 to East Bengal in quarter-final of Super Cup. Aizawl were forced into backline due to continuous threats from East Bengal but created first chance in 40th minute but Ionescu's shot from the edge of the box hit the side netting ending the first half goalless. Aizawl tried to impose themselves in the second half, but East Bengal’s robust defence meant that they had to settle for shots from distance. But with the match entering five minutes of injury-time, East Bengal were awarded a penalty when Kromah was brought down by Lalawmpuia inside the box. Ralte's penalty knocked Aizawl out of the tournament.[92]

On 11 April, Aizawl lost 0–3 to Dhaka Abahani in a home match extending their wait for their first continental points finish. Dhaka Abahani took just 2 minutes to open scoring as Miya effort deflected off Lalrosanga and looped into the net. The visitors extended their lead in the 17th minute when Alison converted a scrappy effort from close range after a corner wasn’t cleared, before Kojima made it 3–0 from just inside the area eight minutes before half time.[93]

On 25 April, Aizawl scored their first points in continental fixtures when they drew 1–1 against Dhaka Abahani at Dhaka. Aizawl started the brighter of the two sides and almost took the lead but Jaryan saw his attempt cleared off the line in the 16th minute. The hosts later managed to take the lead in 31st minute with Onuoha converting from the penalty spot after being fouled in the area by Hmunmawia. Aizawl fought back after the break with Ionescu earning them a point with a close range finish in the 65th minute.[94]

May

On May 2, Aizawl lost 0–5 to Bengaluru in an away encounter. Bottom-placed Aizawl began the match brightly but Bengaluru soon wrestled control of the match with two quick-fire goals after the first quarter of an hour. Chhetri won and converted a penalty in the 16th minute before Segovia finished off Paartalu's pass just moments later to make it 2–0. At the half-hour mark, visitors pulled away further with a third goal netted by Singh. In the 62nd minute, Segovia got his second goal of the evening with an improvised header to meet Bose's cross. Substitute Lalhlimpuia completed the rout in the 89th minute, after flicking Chhetri's cut-back past the Aizawl keeper Lalawmpuia.[95]

On May 16, Aizawl earned 2–1 win over New Radiant in a home encounter to knock visitors out of AFC Cup. This also mark their first continental match win in this season. After a goalless first half, the home side had to wait until the 61st minute to break the deadlock through Dodoz who fired home from the spot after Ionescu was tripped inside the box. Ionescu doubled Aizawl’s lead eight minutes from time after he latched onto Laldinliana’s long pass and outpaced his marker before beating the goalkeeper on the second attempt for a simple finish into the empty net. Hassan pulled one back for Maldivians, getting on the end of Gotor’s nodded pass to finish past Avilash.[5]

Aizawl announced on 28 July 2017 that Paulo Menezes will be taking over as head coach.[96] Menezes said:[19]

I have learnt about Indian football since 4 years ago and I have spoken to many people about it and how much it has grown over the years. I want to be part of this and Aizawl FC is right at the heartbeat of this crescendo of development. I will like my players to play the offensive game with a high level of ball possession so that they can create many scoring chances. Depending on the game situation, we will vary the tempo of our attack but the main focus is on ball [retention]. I will like to help the players improve their skills – be it technically or tactically, so they can become more competitive and maintain a strong mentality before and during the game. I believe I can contribute to Indian football by getting as many of the local players into the National Team as possible.

Izan Martin Andres has been roped in as assistant coach for this season.[97]
On 12 February, Aizawl announced that they parted ways with their head coach, Paulo Menezes after seven consecutive winless streak in their on-going I-League campaign and announced Santosh Kashyap as their replacement.[70][71][72]

Pre-season friendlies

AIzawl played a pre-season friendly match against ISL outfit, Chennaiyin FC behind closed doors. Aizawl FC will compete in Group E alongside 2017 Dhivehi Premier League champions New Radiant, 2017–18 Bangladesh Football Premier League champions Dhaka Abahani and winner of Play-off South Asia match Bengaluru. Aizawl FC announced their 26-man squad for this group stage.[85][86] They got knocked out of the tournament after finishing last in the group stage.[5]
