The 2022 Crimea attacks are a series of air and missile attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Crimean Peninsula from where the Russian Army launched an offensive on Southern Ukraine during the Russian invasion of Ukraine and occupied Kherson and Zaporizhia Oblasts and began the three-month siege of Mariupol. Ukrainian forces received American HIMARS missile systems over the summer, so Ukrainian forces began artillery, missile and drone airstrikes on Crimea on August 9 with an attack on Novofederovka.

Timeline

On the morning of July 31, a drone with an explosive device attacked the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol. 6 people were injured. Due to the attack on the city, all festivities on the occasion of Navy Day were canceled.[1] As usual, Ukrainian officials denied involvement in the attack, but used it to argue about the weakness of Russia's air defense system in Crimea.[2]

A series of large explosions occurred at the Saky airbase in the city of Novofedorivka, Crimea, on August 9, 2022, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[3][4] The military base had been seized by Russian forces during the 2014 annexation of Crimea, part of the Russo-Ukrainian War.

On August 16, a series of explosions took place at the Gvardejskoye military airport. Military and civilian authorities have tested a version of a small unmanned aerial vehicle attack.[5] On the same day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine allegedly carried out a series of acts of sabotage in Dzhankoy district at a military warehouse near the village of Majskoye and at a substation in Dzhankoy itself. The Armed Forces of Ukraine announced that the targets of the attack in the area of the Azov railway station were 11 AFVs, 10 Gvozdika self-propelled guns, 7 Msta-S self-propelled guns, 2 Pion self-propelled guns, 3 Grad MLRS and an ammunition depot. The railway was also damaged in the attack.[6]

On October 1, there were explosions at Belbek military airport near Sevastopol. The governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, said that the plane flew off the runway during landing and caught fire.[7]

On October 8, an explosion occurred on the Crimean bridge: the tanks caught fire and the roadway collapsed.[8]
