Rafael Nadal is the defending champion.[1] He is attempting to equal Serena Williams' Open Era record of 23 major singles titles.

Nine-time champion Novak Djokovic is vying to equal Nadal's all-time record of 22 men's major singles titles. He is also attempting to be the first man to win ten Australian Open titles, and the second man to have ten titles at a single major (after Nadal at the 2017 French Open).

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the tournament due to a right leg injury.[2]

Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Djokovic are in contention for the world No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament. In order to become No. 1, Ruud must reach the final, while Tsitsipas and Djokovic must win the tournament.[citation needed]
