On New Year's Eve from 31 December 2022 to 1 January 2023, the Ukrainian army destroyed the building of the vocational school building in Makiivka, in which there were mobilized Russian soldiers. Several hundred dead (up to 500) and by 300 injured were reported by locals, but neither side has yet announced official numbers.[2]

Shelling

Mobilized men from the Saratov Oblast were very densely populated in the building of vocational school (PTU) No. 19 on Kremlevskaya Street No. 48, with ammunition piles in the basement below them. Ukrainian forces made three attacks with M142 HIMARS at 23:57, 23:59 and 00:00 hours. The shelling began to detonate the Russian ammunition stored below.[3].

Russian regional authorities and Pro-Russian telegram channels have confirmed the deaths of hundreds of mobilized.[4][2] Everything around turned out to be strewn with corpses, which were taken out at night until the middle of the day.

Russian-aligned officials chastised the deployment of so many soldiers in an unsafe building near frontlines. First Deputy Minister of Information of the Donetsk People's Republic Daniil Bezsonov stated that he hoped those who decided to place soldiers in such an unsuitable place would be punished. Ukrainian separatist politician Oleg Tsaryov also stated that such "negligence" should be punished.[5]
