• 13 June – European Parliament election, 1999

October

• 10 October – 1999 Portuguese legislative election: Ruling party PS and the Opposition ones conquer exactly 115 MPs, the first and (as of 2015) only time such a draw happened in the Third Republic. Considering the results, Prime Minister António Guterres (in office since 1995) is eventually appointed for a second term in office.
• 12 October – Portugal is awarded the hosting rights of UEFA Euro 2004.

• 19 And 20 December – Portugal peacefully hands over Macau to the People's Republic of China as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, marking the end of the Portuguese Empire.
