The album is rare in its original form, and is more commonly found in compilation with Miroslav Vitouš' 1970 album Mountain in the Clouds (a.k.a. Infinite Search, a.k.a. The Bass). Two tracks, "Tones for Joan's Bones" and "This Is New", were included on the Atlantic compilation Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner. The whole album was also released in the 1973 two-LP Chick Corea compilation album set Inner Space. The CD reissue of Inner Space, however, omits the second and the third track due to time limitations.
The title track, "Tones for Joan's Bones", and "Straight Up and Down" were first recorded on November 17 1966, two weeks prior to this recording with Blue Mitchell's group, and were included in his album Boss Horn (1966).
