For the Eurovision Song Contest 1999, held in Jerusalem, Israel, France entered "Je veux donner ma voix" to compete, performed by Nayah. For the first time since 1987, the French held a national final to select their entry.

Before Eurovision

Eurovision 1999: La Sélection

For Eurovision 1999, broadcaster France 3 were in charge of the French participation instead of France 2, due to the latter being unable to broadcast the 1999 contest, having to broadcast the French Rugby League Championship which conflicted with the date for the final.

Competing entries

From 600 songs originally submitted to France 2, 12 entries were selected by France 3 to compete in a national final.[1] Among the 12 entries, there were songs performed in Breton, Arabic, Basque and Hebrew, in addition to French.

Final

The final took place on 2 March 1999 at the L'Olympia in Paris, hosted by Julien Lepers and Karen Cheryl. The winning song was determined by public televoting (50%) and a ten-member jury panel (50%). The jury panel consisted of Gilbert Bécaud, Marie Myriam, Jocelyne Béroard, Lââm, Sandy Valentino, Richard Cocciante, Jean-Pierre Bouryayre, Laurent Petitguillaume, Jean-Michel Boris and Jean Réveillon.

As there was a tie for the first place, where Ginie Line won the jury vote while Nayah won the televote, the results of the public televote took precedence and led to the victory of Nayah.[2]
