Emys is a small genus of turtles in the family Emydidae. The genus (sensu lato) is endemic to Europe and North America.
Species
The following five species may be assigned to the genus Emys (sensu lato).[2]
- Emys orbicularis (Linnaeus, 1758) – European pond turtle[3]
- Emys trinacris Fritz et al., 2005 – Sicilian pond turtle[3][4]
- Emys blandingii (Holbrook, 1838) – Blanding's turtle[3][5]
- Emys marmorata Baird & Girard, 1852 – western pond turtle[3]
- Emys pallida (Seeliger, 1945) – southwestern pond turtle[3]
Nota bene: A binomial authority in parentheses indicates that the species was originally described in a genus other than Emys.
Taxonomy
The eastern North American species, E. blandingii, is sometimes separated into its own genus, Emydoidea. Similarly, the western North American species, E. marmorata and E. pallida, are sometimes assigned to their own genus, Actinemys.[6]
