Akila Viraj Kariyawasam is a Sri Lankan politician and a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka (Sinhala: අකිල විරාජ් කාරියවසම්,Tamil: அகில விராஜ் காரியவசம்; born 23 May 1973). He currently serves as Minister of Education of Sri Lanka who assumed the office on 13 January 2015.[1] A lawyer by profession, Kariyawasam was first elected to the Parliament of Sri Lanka in 2004.[2]

Early life and career

Akila Viraj Kariyawasam was born in Kuliyapitiya in the North Western Province district of Kurunegala.He went to school at the Kuliyapitiya Central College.His father, who was the registrar of a university, is today a prominent entrepreneur in Kuliyapitiya. His mother is a social worker.In his family of 6 members, 5 are graduates. Three of them are lawyers. One is a doctor of law in Australia’s Griffith University.

Kariyawasam holds a BA degree in Economics, Political Science & International Affairs from the University of Colombo and a LLB in Law from the Open University of Sri Lanka. He's the Chief Organizer of the United National Party for the Kuliyapitiya electorate and is the party's leader for the Kurunegala District.

Kariyawasam is considered a staunch believer of the UNP policies and conservative ideologies [citation needed]. He has won a reputation among the general public as a parliamentarian who talks substance[citation needed].

Kariyawasam is married and has one daughter.
